Redskins G.M. Bruce Allen spoke at the Washington Football Legends charity banquet on Saturday night, and was predictably peppered with questions about his team’s blockbuster trade up in the draft.

MDS nailed those quotes in this post.

Allen was also asked about the future of tight end Fred Davis, whom the Redskins franchise tagged on March 2.

“We franchised Fred because he was our most valuable free agent. We’re hoping to get a deal done with him,” Allen said. “A longer-term deal.”

Making a long-term commitment to Davis could be perceived as risky. Davis was suspended for the final four games of the 2011 season after failing a drug test just after the lockout ended. At the time, SI.com’s Jim Trotter reported that Davis’ positive test was “at least” his third career violation of the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

Thus, another violation would put Davis at risk of an eight-game, or even season-long suspension.

While he is clearly a part of the Redskins’ long-term plans, it might behoove the organization to make Davis prove he can stay marijuana free for at least a year before signing off on a long-term contract.
