If Cards want Manning, they’ll need to scramble to create cap space

Reuters

Now that the 2012 salary cap has been set at $120.6 million, we’ve obtained the full list of the cap space, or surplus, that the teams have.

With less than 48 hours until all 32 franchises must be in compliance with the spending limit, plenty of teams have work to do.

And if the Arizona Cardinals hope to sign Peyton Manning, they’ll need to roll up their sleeves and create some cap space.

The Cardinals are $16.4 million over the cap, as adjusted to reflect $2 million in 2011 carryover and $1.333 million in downward adjustments.

Amazingly, the Cardinals could have carried over $7.04 million.  They opted only to carry over $2 million.  (In fairness to the Cardinals, there’s a chance they engaged in a transaction that they somehow chewed up $5.04 million in 2011 cap space in the period between February 12 and February 28.  We’re trying to find out if that’s what happened, because it makes no sense not to carry over every penny available.)

If they’d carried over the full amount, the Cardinals would have had to clear only $11.4 million by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET.  More importantly, the Cardinals would have had an extra $5 million to pay Manning.

For the Cardinals, the challenge will be to clear $16.4 million and then enough beyond that to fit Peyton’s contract under the cap.

  1. I wonder what the market for Kolb is…. Or how much of a hit it would be to cut him.

  2. I believe myself and the fans of the other 31 teams would like to see the full list of cap space. No hate on Ari or Mr manning but lets move aside and make a post for all 32 teams…

  3. Advantage Denver.

Manning will surely want a couple of his pals to tag along with him………

  4. Meanwhile, the Broncos have over 30 million in available space, not just for Manning, but for Wayne, Clark and hey, maybe even Garçon!

  5. The Cardinals seem to be like the 22 year old kid with a $9 a hour job looking at new Porsche’s.

  6. Not sure if anyone caught it or not but just for a couple minutes there was a headline stating “the Seahawks and Chiefs were out of the Manning sweepstakes”, it was quickly removed for whatever reason.

  7. Are you gonna post the full list of cap space for each team?

Also, pathetic by the Cardinals. Inexcusable. Don’t understand how you can make that mistake when there is absolutely no downside to carrying over the extra cap space.

  8. Let me get this straight…they’re wining and dining the top free agent this year, who is going to be expensive…and they can’t afford their current roster?!

Oh, and their OL is garbage…so if they do squeeze under the cap, and get Peyton…they’re going to get him killed because they don’t have anybody that can block my son’s flag football team’s defensive line…and they have no $ to improve it!

  9. well with 16.9 cleared by cutting the worst left tackle in league…..zona will have the cap space if needed.

  10. Hey PFT, ask some of the people Manning met with since Friday if his hand shake was good and firm or if it was like grabbing a handful of cooked noodles?
    Just curious.

  11. This is why this is such crap… first of all , shame on the NFL and NFLPA for making teams wait till the freaking deadline to give out a number.. makes no sense at all… Second, how the hell the Cardinals going to clear 16 million in 2 days… then dump another 20 million on Manning and also dump more cap space for draft picks or any other poss f/a they will need to pick up in order to get someone in and have enough money…

NO idea as to why the Cardinals doing dog and pony show … they have to get ridd of at least 40 million by Tuesday….

Would there be a team on the Cardinals of any quality after doing all that ? Advantage so far — Broncos.

  12. So correct me if I am wrong. If Peyton were to go to the Cards, a deal would essentially have to be announced tomorrow. Right? I mean, they would be stupid to start cutting people without a deal. A deal would probably come first then Kolb et al would be shipped out.

  13. I have been saying this for a while now. Out of the teams that have shown interest in Manning, the Broncos are way more financially ready. And have the room to sign Wayne, Clark, and Saturday. Miami only has 10 mil in space.

Right now the Cards would have to get rid of 30 mil in contracts in 30 hours. Good luck.

  14. Clearing cap space is easy. You cut a few over the hill veterans and restructure a few contracts and before you know it you are well under the cap…..

  15. But if there was a deal for Manning in ARZ, teams would low bid for Kolb, due to the fact they know they have to release him eventually. waiting ten minutes before the deadline, is a shame….

  16. Ok good luck with you and Fitzgerald and no more cap space. Miami can have Flynn reunite with Philbin, rework Long and Marshall contracts, extend Bush, sign Wayne, Clark, Saturday and JT can come out of retirement and bring Title Town to South Beach.

  17. Why in the hell did Arizona waste Mannings time, they cant even afford what they have on the roster how do they think they can pay Manning, Wayne and Clark?

  18. Manning will suck in Denver, He sucks in cold weather games, not to mention he has to play Oakland twice!
It really does not matter cause Manning will not make it through the year, Either way some team and their little fans will get their hearts broken when they find out Manning cant even play anymore all awhile paying him a butt load and destroying the team and setting them back years to come because they gave Manning the house just to pose for a picture wearing their uniform

  19. Please dont sign him Arizona i want the donkeys to over pay for Peyton(water pistol) Manning and then watch Tamba crush his 5 head in.

  20. “becasue it’s Bye Bye Levi brown, the baddest LT in the whole dang town,…” is that 17 mill? and Mr Porter, I believe the door exits to the left…. another how many million? Oh less, we forget there is plenty more room to open up as well… the question> are The Cardinals a different team then before….
    what say you, Mr Manning?

  21. As everyone knows, this number can be very deceiving. The following cap #’s will surely disappear (unsure of penalties though): Levi Brown -= $18.2 mil, Joey Porter – $7.3 mil, Chansi Stuckey – $2.2 mil, Kevin Kolb – $10mil and possibly Stewart Bradley – $6 mil. In addition, it would not be a surprise to see Fitz and Adrian Wilson restructure, and a long term deal with Cambell would spread his bonus over more years and reduce his $10.5 mil cap number. I have no doubt they can make PM, and a couple FA and draft picks work but why they didn’t carry over all the money from last year is beyond me.

  22. I don’t understand why one would be mad if there team is over the cap…. or how long it took the NFL to give out the cap number… Keep your cap in check and then you never have to worry.

so they cut a crap load of players to get under the cap then what?

Cardinals are the Raiders of the NFC

just because you cut someone doesn’t mean your off the hook penalty free. You will still take a cap hit cutting Kolb and Brown. The best thing for the cards would be to get Brown forced into a massive restructure but eventually it’s still gonna catch up

  25. Do you guys really think the Cardinals don’t already have a plan in place? Seriously? Do you think they sat around tonight saying “crap he may want to come here and we can’t afford him!” come on guys you can’t be that dense…can you?

    Here’s the situation:

    1. The Cardinals have a plan to get under the cap. They don’t have to do anything more than that right now.

    2. If Peyton wants to go to AZ, they implement their plan to waive/restructure enough deals to get a deal done

    3. If Oeyton doesn’t come, they don’t have to make as many moves, so why would you make a bunch of moves until you have to in order to sign Peyton. That some of you think this cap situation is some big surprise that’s a deal breaker in AZ is actually pretty funny

  26. They already planned on cutting the players mentioned.

  27. I think the Bidwells were planning to cut Larry to create enough cap space for Manning. You know the cards have a history of making brilliant moves in order to win.

  28. If Levi Jones and Joey Porter are cut and Kevin Kolb is traded, then it’s absolutely possible.

Well, except it IS impossible to trade Kolb – who would take him…? No one.

  29. I’m sure Peyton and his agent are aware of the finances of the teams they are visiting. It’s unfortunate the writer failed to mention that the Cards would free up over 17 mil by cutting Levi Brown, which will happen.

Don’t know what 5 head you’re talking about, have you seen Peyton’s melon in person? That’s a 7 head if I’ve ever seen one!

  31. Supposedly Kolb would only count $2M against this year’s cap. There is some loophole in the CBA where you can cut up to 2 guys before the June 1 date and still get only the current year portion of prorated signing bonus on this year. The remaining $6M would count against next year if this is true.

  32. Is someone actually complaining about the Cards having to cut a bunch of non-contributors and severely overpaid players to make room for arguably the best QB ever? LOL

Stuckey, Porter: Complete Wastes of Space.

Kolb, Bradley: Ex Eagles who robbed the Cardinals of Money with their mediocre to below average play.

Levi Brown: Huge Bust worth 1/2 of what he is getting paid (should be renegotiated and placed at guard if he wants to come back)

  33. How in the world the Cardinals over the cap?
Who are they paying big money other than Fitzgerald ?
Goodbye Levi brown, other O-linemen, accountants, other players who under performed and the cap number should be good.

    They started the season 1-7!

  34. I live in Phoenix. Although I’m no Cardinals fan, the city has a lot going for it and the weather is amazing during the months football is played. That being said, even if the Cards didn’t have to dump all those salary dollars just to break even with the cap, Manning would get creamed behind the O-line the Cards have. Both Denver and Miami have better protection, and you gotta think that is gonna be a factor with Peyton.

  35. shzastl says: Mar 11, 2012 10:54 PM

“Peyton said it’s not about the money, so it shouldn’t be any problem.”

Yeah right, but I don’t think he said he’d play for free.

I posted about this yesterday when it was said he was going to AZ. So if they release all their overpriced veterans including the starting LT. Who’s going to protect his blind side, a rookie or Levi’s back up.

What’s really stupid is they were able to carry over $7 mil but decided $2 mil is good enough… remember this the next time you want to call the Dolphins management clueless.

The fact is, the Card’s just got Fisher-ed.

  36. If the Cardinals cut Levi Brown they have enough money for Peyton. If they cut Levi Brown the 49ers defense will put PM in a wheel chair. Wonder how long PM was in Arizona before he realized he was wasting his time. PM only has one real choice if he is serious about winning, DENVER!!

  37. This just in … Manning says he’ll sign with whoever offers him the most money as long as he doesn’t have to throw beforehand.

    Caveat emptor.

  38. jrcoop says: Mar 12, 2012 12:02 AM

“Yeah right, but I don’t think he said he’d play for free.”

No kidding! It’s called sarcasm …

  39. Certainly Peyton’s agent must have know the Cardinals are tapped out. Why would he even visit Arizona give their cap situation? There were plenty of better options available. Something doesn’t add up. Now he seems to have burned a few bridges with teams that did not get a visit and only one team seems viable.

  40. Cut Levi Brown: $16 Million saved

Cut Kevin Kolb: $6 Million saved

Cut Joey Porter: $5 Million saved

Sign Calias Campbell to long term deal: $5 Million saved.

Redo Fitz’s and Stewart Bradley’s deal: $10 Million saved.

  41. This is so insane. The team that gets Manning could end up with anything from the greatest QB of all time to a guy who can’t make it through more than a handful of games while throwing inaccurate softballs.

    And anywhere in between.
