Saints schedule weekend visit with Curtis Lofton

Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that the Saints have scheduled a weekend free agent visit with linebacker Curtis Lofton.

We mentioned the Saints’ interest in Lofton previously. His signing would almost certainly seal Jonathan Vilma’s fate with the franchise.

New Orleans doesn’t have much salary cap space, but it could create enough room to sign Lofton by releasing Vilma. The move would also upgrade a leaky run defense.

Adam Caplan reports that the Saints are showing interest in free agent outside linebacker Chris Chamberlain, formerly of the Rams. Free agent inside linebackers Joe Mays and David Hawthorne have been on New Orleans’ radar, as well.

  1. Vilmas best years were 2 years ago.. He is an emotional leader and thats about all.. Dunbar shined when he took over when Vilma was hurt. They need to re-sign him and Castillas.. With those two and Wilson and possibly Lofton, they could form a damn good LB group.. The wildcard in the whole thing is Jeremiah Hunter..That kid was flying all over the field last preseason before he got hurt, He has a ton of upside and could be a force

  2. My thinking is Vilma is going to be facing a lengthy suspension, thus the interest in another MLB

  3. My team being in the NFC I am kind of scared of the Saints because they got a mastermind at DC and making an improvement on the D and they will be a contender. But they do need to lock up Drew Brees before they make any other move.

  4. Vilma needs to go, he has tainted the team with the 10g bounty and he isn’t productive anymore. He maybe be smart but his injury has cost him. CyA VilmA!

  5. If Vilma is healthy and his suspension is at the most 4 games y would you let your best linebacker leave. When healthy he is one of the best inside lbs in the league. He was hurt last year he is healthy now. Why not let him prove himself this year. He will be playing with a huge chip on his shoulder. We saved money by not resigning Nicks and Meachem. If you want to cut someone cut Shanle. Don’t resign Dunbar. Resign Cassillas another player that deserves a second chance cause of injury. You got Tez Wilson that looks like he has potential. If you can also add a Lofton or a Hawthorne and maybe pick one up in the draft your linebacking core can now look like a strength.
