Thanks for our best week ever

Within the first year or so after launching this thing in 2001, we embarked on an effort to generate revenue.  And so we asked around and obtained a referral to an advertising company.

The response to the inquiry was blunt:  “Get back to us when you have 10 million page views per month.”

At the time, it was a number so high in comparison to our traffic that it was inconceivable to ever come close to it.

Fortunately, that word continues to not mean what I think it means.

Fueled by a stubborn desire to show the advertising company whose name I’ve long since forgotten that they had underestimated PFT, we kept plugging away.  Four years ago, we started to consistently crack the 10 million views-per-month barrier on a consistent basis.

In the past fives days, we caught a pair of the once-white whales.

From Monday through Friday, a total of 22.935 million page views were pushed through the wires and tubes that connect the hamster-powered servers to the rest of the world.  And for that we thank every one of you.

To those who have been with us since the site looked like this to those of you who have found us recently to those of you who enjoy the content via the kick-ass NBC SportsTalk app on iPad, iPhone, and Android devices, thanks for spending some time here and we hope you continue to do so.  Even when it’s 18-plus hours of work per day, as it’s been every day this week, it’s never really work.

We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy creating it.  And maybe one of these days I’ll be able to call up that advertising company whose name I still can’t remember and tell them that we got their 10 million page views in one single day.

  1. I bet that I have personally been to PFT or refreshed at least 500 times since Monday. By far my most visited site, and it isn’t close.

  2. Your contributions to the decrease in worker productivity are duly noted–and that used to be the sole domain of March Madness.

    Thank you.

    And my wife thanks you.

  3. Congrats! I’ve been checking this site for the latest rumors for a couple years (sorry it took me so long to find it). I really don’t care if the articles are fact or not; they’re usually pretty accurate anyway. Besides, rumors are always more entertaining and far more interesting than a story that just contains all the factoids. People who complain about the lack of hard info in your articles need to go to a different site. It’s called “The Rumor Mill” for a reason. Even though I might not always agree with your slant on an article, I enjoy reading it.

What I love the most, though, are all the comments. Things get pretty wild among the fans of various teams, but that’s what keeps bringing me back…along with your articles, of course.

Again, congratulations. And keep on keepin’ on.

  4. Mike, you are an ANIMAL! Not only do you work the TV, phones, SMS, and Twitter all day you somehow manage to write and post some good s#$t for PFT!

Why haven’t you ever taken on a sidekick?

    Lovin’ it!

  5. Your reporting on Mario Williams is responible for my hits. As a fellow blogger, I can understand about the page hits. Getting views (and a repeated viewing audience) is a lot harder than expected. I appreciate the hours you put in.

  6. Alot of emotional stories like this this week.

I just hate to see valuable that could focus on
the next time peyton manning takes a dump stories.

  7. Congrats! Does this mean you will be jumping into the Peyton Manning race? $91 million?

  8. Congrats! Your apps are really good but your actual website still looks amateur spend about 5 more min and upgrade it to at least something that meets 2001 Internet standards, no offense.

  9. Congratulations is due. I remember when this site was rather new, and but a small blip on the radar. PFT was well down the list of sites I would visit for NFL rumors and fan opinion. now it’s one of the first I go to, despite my threats of never returning time and time again.

The power of the internet and, word of mouth/message board links, is an amazing thing. To think I was in my early 30’s when I first heard of this place, and am now 41. rarely does a blog last this long, let alone draw enough attention to gain the backing of a major television network and get it’s creator a seat at the Super Bowl.

  10. I’ve been visiting tis site ever since your very first year – I’m still waiting for maybe at least just a little commission check?

  11. Congrats to the whole PFT crew. Well earned.

Sure, you have adversely affected my work productivity level but that’s the price I pay.

And I am going to miss Rosenthal!

  12. I buy every product advertised on your site. Take that advertising company that was obviously wrong but well intentioned.

  13. You’ve put a lot into this and done a great job. The success is well merited.

If you want to thank me, stop deleting my posts.

  14. Created an acct just to let you know I think you are awesome! I am clearly addicted and I wish I found u sooner. I constantly refresh, only problem is you don’t have an article as often as I refresh 🙂 keep up the amazing work cause I gave up going to espn and since u report on them as well. If I didn’t make it clear I’ll say it boldly I LOVE PFT!!!!!!!!!1111!!!111!!!

  15. Mike – I’ve been with you from the start. I am your biggest advertiser (at the local level of course…)

  16. And Mike — you’ve grown in that time as a writer who has something to say.

Think Red Smith, Grantland Rice. Shirley Povich.

    Keep it up.

  17. I’m entertained that the best week the site has ever had was in the offseason. Not that it doesn’t make sense- Manning, Bountygate, etc.- but it’s still kind of ironic.

    Congrats, Mike!

  18. Thank Mario Williams and all the billsmafia,I personally refreshed the site like 10,326 times

  19. Get back to us when you have 10 million page views per month

    Not very big on diplomacy.

Seems odd to treat potential future customers in such a manner.

Having the last laugh must be nice.

  20. When I clicked on kick ass thinking it was a link to your app it took me to a brad Childress story. Uhhhhhh?

  21. The best is that the archived link has a rumor article about a team moving to L.A. — and absolute staple of the NFL rumor mill for the last decade and a frequent topic on this site. The archive link is fascinating to read.

  22. Been following this site since the Vince Young/Matt Leinart/Reggie Bush debate of the 06 draft.

Congrats boss, been my #1 website ever since. I remember the live chats for MNF, Taco Bill’s (where the heck is he?!) awesome pics and the great hamster meltdown that led to a temporary hosting from NBC that led to a lucrative partnership that got Mike all the toupee’s he could ever dream of.

    Congrats again, God bless

  23. thanks for making us readers feel important and taking the tine to write this as well. you show great appreciation for us but we have great appreciation for you. I come to Pft at least 100 times a day to check for the latest news. you make it so easy to get all football news all from one resource! love it! keep up the great work and here’s to another 10 successful years!

  24. I agree with every one so far, I refresh this site probably a hundred times a day, and always read the comments. Any time I touch my iPad now it is the first place I go, especially since the iPad app shows you all of sports in one page. Brilliant and highly addictive, please keep it up. Now if I could just stop reading/refreshing/sometimes commenting on my iPhone while driving….I thought I had a problem but after reading the comments so far, I see I’m not alone! Is there a profootballtalkohlics anonymous class? I need to register!!!!

  25. No. THANK YOU! I’ve been following you guys for almost 5yrs. This app is the only reason I carry a Smartphone. Every person I’ve turned on to this site has thanked me. Keep up the great work!

  26. I first became aware of PFT only last year and since then it has become the 1st webpage (as well as PHT) and last page i view every day. Plus the 20-30 times i check it out via my phone throughout the day!

    Love this site!

  27. I’m sure this will never get posted, but here it goes – I remember a struggling blog run by a driven lawyer. It really made it’s name during the Mike Vick investigation. The lawyer had the guts to tell the ugly truth about what Vick did and how it was so much bigger than “just a few dead dogs” as the apologists liked to claim. The comments, however, had gotten out of control. The attacks had become racial and the language grotesque. The lawyer had to put a stop to it. So, the comments were censored, but only if they were not “family friendly”. You could still voice your opinion, but it had to be respectable. It was censorship, but it was fair. You still had a voice. Then, the site grew bigger and the censorship spun out of control. You could be respectful and still have your post removed. Criticism of the site and writers disappeared. Well written posts with facts disputing a post disappeared. What was a simple censorship policy to make the site attractive for fans of all ages became something ugly. If you really want to thank the fans that followed you from well before the glory days with NBC, bring back a fair and just censorship policy. Let our comments stand as long as the language is clean and no one is attacked because of the color of their skin, belief, or not, in God, etc. Bring back the PFT that we all recommended to every and any football fan we knew. If this comment actually makes it onto the site, I’ll have some hope that maybe the glory days, when the readers were treated as partners in this venture, can return. If it doesn’t, well, that will speak volumes, as well.

  28. Oh, wait, there WAS a Tebow image in the site all week. And he was injected into the Manning thing every five minutes. Never mind.

  29. Been a loyal follower since 2004 and always told anyone I knew about this site as the best insider football website. I’ll always remember PFT as the first place to tenaciously follow and report the Michael Vick dog fighting herpes stories before anyone else would dare touch it.

  30. Are the PFT app page views counted the same as a web browser view? Or are they seperate and you combine them?

Now if you can improve the comment feature in the android app as well as fix the full screen capabilities of it AND enable it to be moved to my SD card so I can install another flavor of Angry Birds, it would be perfect!

Since you have WordPress handling the comments, is there a way users can be ranked by their comments? And keep a running track of their performance and allow others to “follow” the ones that are funny/good commentors?

  31. The traffic is probably due to all the haters whose teams won’t spend money in free agency coming on here to bash others in jealousy. Hi haters!

Oh, and also because you guys do a pretty good job 🙂

  32. I love this site but I’m pretty sure at least 20% of your hits come from guys looking for Peruvian Fetish Transexuals.

    just sayin….

  33. I’ve loved this site for a long time but I wish you guys would bring back the “pic of the day”.

  34. It is one of the first pages I check each morning to see what is happening in the NFL. Of course, I wish you wouldn’t write articles on the troubled NFL players….instead write on the good they do. But my favorite time of the year is…..wait for it….NOW. Free Agency to see who goes where and for how much… is amazing to see what teams will pay for an individual they feel will get them to the SB.

My husband….not so much a sports fan….thinks I’m nuts that I can carry on a conversation with another male and know more than them. I love it. But, of course, I remember the 60’s when you knew every player on the team and what college they graduated from….back before collective bargaining.

Thanks for the great job of bringing the info as it happens….I check my phone many times per day to see the updates.

  35. PFT sometimes frustrates us all, but I wouldn’t change it. Thank you!

After all, where else can Ravens/Steelers fans hash it out?

  36. Best sports app out there. I recommend it to all my friends. I am on here at least 10 times a day staying up to date on breaking news. Keep up good work.
