Jets, LaRon Landry agree to one-year, $4 million contract

The Jets’ aggressive push for LaRon Landry has paid off.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter ‏reports that Landry reached an agreement with the Jets on a one-year, $4 million deal.

For the Jets, it’s a big move that shores up the safety position, which was a big question mark in their defense. When he’s healthy Landry can be a tough, physical playmaker who looks like he should be a good fit for Rex Ryan’s schemes.

The big question is whether he’ll be healthy for 16 games in 2012. Landry missed eight games last year and seven the year before, and the Achilles injury he suffered last year is a concern. But if Landry is healthy, this is a big deal for the Jets.

  1. Since everyone loves to hate the Jets, ill be the first to say Congrats Jets on a not bad, conservative, down to earth free agent signing. Now repeat…

  2. Good. At least we’re doing something.

We need to revamp the team. Granted Sanchez sucks, but we can hide it better with a better D.

  3. Good riddance, LaRon Landry.

It’s a good thing the Jets only signed him to a one year deal because they’ll be sick of him after that year.

The guy can’t cover, the guy can’t tackle. All he’s good at is moving heavy weights around in a controlled environment.

  4. I hope he does stay healthy and takes away playing time from Eric Smith. Jets still need to take a free safety like Iloka from Boise St.

  5. If he is healthy is the key. I wish LL30 luck and just in case he is healthy I am glad he is in the AFC. You know ex-Redskins seem to become Pro Bowlers so LL30 will probably be a beast in NY.

  6. Can’t wait for the pathetic commentary coming from the peanut gallery about how the Jets needed to sign someone else or how Rex is fat or how they’re all overrated and Sanchez is not their hero. I think people hate on the Jets just to hate on the Jets, it’s so ridiculous. They weren’t even a playoff team last year. Mind your business!

  7. Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe wrote that Landry’s physical with New England was iffy at best. When healthy he can be a beast but as most Skin fans know this guy has a serious achilles condition that he did not get operated on when advised to do so by team officials.

  8. If Sean Taylor didn’t pass away, Landry and Taylor were destined for greatness in the secondary. Landry needs a true free safety in order to reach his potential as the strong safety. Being healthy is the other key.

He wore out his welcome in D.C., but I want to see him do well and recover from his injury.

  9. Really? That’s all? Vikings couldn’t take a risk on him for that kind of contract? Good sign jets…

  10. Landry is a beast, for sure. Don’t expect much in the coverage game, if he can stay healthy enough to be on the field. Hate to see him go – but won’t miss him a bit as a cover guy.

    HAIL

  11. always loved Landry when he was on the field, it just wasn’t often enough in recent seasons. Best wishes in NY LaRon, guess I won’t see much of my buddy’s #30 jersey anymore

  12. I wouldn’t exactly call “one-year, $4 million contract” an “aggressive push.”

  13. Miami could have easily cut Yeremiah Bell who has 1yr left and is earning 6million, and given a 3 year deal to Landry! Good signing by the JETS.

  14. Well if this just doesn’t say it all…and the reason the Skins let him walk…

  15. Guy can’t tackle? Had 85 tackles in 9 games 2 years ago. Can’t tackle. Right. EIGHTY FIVE TACKLES IN NINE GAMES. Really horrible tackler though.

  16. Rex is fat…FEET…Sanchez sucks…

now that thats out of the way…

Yes…we did over pay but we were up against it. Our S sucked last year and we already lost Pool…

    Needed to fill the slot.

He should be good in the 6 games he plays this year,

You really expect people to take it easy on you or your team with a handle like that?

  18. Landry should make a tough defense tougher (assuming he’s on the field.) I think he’ll be good.

    Here come the Jets babe!

  20. the Jets needed to sign someone else ………. Rex is fat …….. they’re all overrated and Sanchez is not their hero.
    How’s that?

  21. sweet pickup. pay a guy $4 million to ruin his body with supplements and roids. This clown is a physical freak, but clearly his body can’t hold up to his “rigorous workout regimen”.

and yes I LOVE that fact Reggie Nelson t-bagged your sorry team/coach/city to stay in the “much maligned” Nasti Natti.

  22. Jets just signed a 4 Million dollar body resting on a shot Achilles tendon.

There’s reason it is called that. That little spot brought down possibly the greatest warrior in antiquity and without a healthy one you’re basically worthless.

Great signing for the Jets, and a huge loss for my skins…if he ever gets healthy.

I personally don’t see that happening because the dude insists on adding insane bulk, and regularly refuses medical advice. He needs surgery, and he’s gonna try to play without it, and he’s going to ruin his career for it.

  23. If the NFL didn’t handicap the Redskins we probably could have thrown him this kind of contract. He’s a beast when healthy and with the Redskins luck he’ll probably never miss another game the rest of his career.

  24. Next Ed reed? Please

Laron wasn’t even the best safety in his family. That would go to Dwan who played besides Ed Reed and that’s about the only time landry and reed are EVER mentioned in the same sentence.

  25. I wish LaRon well but the guy was never healthy, and if he would’ve had the surgery on the achilles tendon like he was told he probably would have still been with the Skins. When he is healthy he is a beast, but he can’t cover, and he’s nowhere near the late Sean Taylor. Good luck NY, I really do hope the guy does well, no hate here, but it all depends on whether or not he can stay healthy and stop lifting weights!

  26. It’s a 1 year deal. No harm, No foul. Anyone other than Smitty is an upgrade to me. Now need a FS. Most likely Leonhard back.

  27. Honestly this is a really good signing for the Jets if he can stay healthy.

LaRon Landry is basically the player Rex Ryan thinks Eric Smith is. So theoretically our schemes will work now.

Honestly, if you look at every bad Jets defensive play last season, someone with Smith or Leonhard on the nameplate is usually chasing after the guy on the play…

  28. 4 mill… really? For a broken Safety? We needed safeties drastically but I am sure we could have done something better… this is bad. He will play 4-6 games this year and even though 2 games of him is better than 1 whole season of Eric Smith, it still isn’t good or worth it… Bah… we need a FS!!!! Please dont take Barron, another broken safety with our first pick….

  29. Good ballplayer when healthy (which he hasn’t been). They probably overspent on him, but it’s not the worst free agent signing of all time, either.

  30. seriously, liked Landry coming out. He was supposed to visit the Lions, but I never figured he would get there . Good signing if he stays healthy, and some injury prone guys can turn things around. See Chinadoll $tafford! Good luck Landry, would have liked to see you next to Delmas.

  31. When healthy the guy is a wrecking ball in the box. Trouble is he hasn’t been able to get on the field enough the past 2 years.

Guy can’t tackle? Had 85 tackles in 9 games 2 years ago. Can’t tackle. Right. EIGHTY FIVE TACKLES IN NINE GAMES. Really horrible tackler though.

EXACTLY-THAT WAS THE HEALTHY 30 no ones arguing that point, but there are 16 regular season games he’s failed to finish the last two. I’d be willing to bet it’ll be 8-9 again this year as well.

  34. You’ll tire of him after he constantly flexes after stopping someone 7 yards down the field on a 3rd and 5 or getting a late hit penalty……that is, of course, if he’s actually out there playing.

Oh yeah, don’t adjust your tv sets, that blur was him taking bad-angle tackles; flying across the screen whiffing completely.

  35. LaRon Landry is str8ght up JACKED! I got on a supplement regimen similar to his from the place he gets all his vitamins, supplements, and nutritional products from Trainer’s Choice in Slidell, LA…alot of top athletes get their supplements there

  36. Jet fans should be excited about the POTENTIAL, because if he can stay healthy he can make plays. He makes receivers adjust their routes over the middle of the field due to his hard hitting, but I just wish he was more consistent with his tackling. If Rex can start with the fundamentals of tackling with this guy, he will be an asset in your running game. Good luck Dirty30, but it was time to move on just as it was with Carlos Rogers last year.

  37. What Happened to the Birds on this? All our holes on Defense (Both Safety Spots, All 3 LB Spots) still no signings??

I guess this really will be Reids last year

  38. What Happened to the Birds on this? All our holes on Defense (Both Safety Spots, All 3 LB Spots) still no signings??

I guess this really will be Reid’s last year

  39. This move does much to shore up the Yet’s weakest spot, the quarterback position.

  40. Not a bad move for the Jets. I wanted him in NE because we are weak at safety, but from what the local reporters have been saying his physical scared the patriots off big time.

  41. Everytime I read his name I recall the headline from 2007 or 2008 here on PFT, “LaRon hits LaDong” or something similar. And I laugh evrytime!

  42. This Skins fan is happy to see Landry go.

When healthy, Landry is a solid player in run support and an electrifying hitter.

However, Landry bites on double-moves about 95% of the time and is easily beaten in coverage. He has some of the worst hands in all of football… catches maybe 20% of the possible INTs he gets his hands on. (maybe this is a Redskin-specific problem since Carlos Rogers finally discovered how to catch the ball when he went to the 49ers). Finally, and most importantly, Landry is never healthy. He has needed surgery on his Achilles tendon since 2010 but has REFUSED to get it. Frankly, all of that extra weight he’s put on in an effort to “Hulk up” is only going to put more pressure on that jacked-up tendon. I put the over/under on games played this year at 5. I’m taking the under.

    HTTR!

  43. Don’t ‘roids effect the tendons? Is the Achilles a big tendon? He did not want to do surgery. Alot of good questions there.

He would have 85 tackles with 75 missed tackles. The tackle stat doesnt show anything, Landry bounces off people constantly because he is always going for the knockout hit.

The Ed Reed compairison is even worse. SS and FS are two completely different positions. You both need to actually watch more football.

  45. Unless your name is Tannenbaum, or Ryan, why are you all so concerned about what the Jets paid for him?? Buffalo fans ragged on Maybin too, and he became quite an impact player the next season in green and white.

I’m excited to see what this kid can do.
Stay healthy, and give ’em hell, LaRon!

  46. Looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane most of the time. He is only a SS at this point. He had serious issues containing his gap assignment especially when had outside contain responsibilities. Totally a freak athelete but he did whatever the hell he wanted, but maybe Rex can give him one key each play. He is the biggest sucker for a double move in the League. DJax and Garcon posterized him in prime time as well as Jacobs when he got trucked.

  47. I will bet the New York Jets organization $4 million dollars that Laron Landry does not play 10 games for them this year. It doesn’t matter how athletic you once were coming out of college. This guy’s not young anymore. He’s beaten up by the NFL. He would be a big pickup on anyone’s team, but the Jets took the risk.

  48. “crybradycry says:

2 years is a long time ago. Even then he probably missed twice as many as he made.

Issues: He thinks he’s faster than he is so he takes bad angles on the ball. He thinks he’s a wrecking ball and tries to nail a guy but bounces off of him. Doesn’t wrap up. Always hits high (shoulder level, not accusing him of being dirty, just sloppy). Even when he gets a grip on a running back’s pads the running back gets away.

He over pursues in edge coverage. He over pursues on the blitz. He bites on every double more. He doesn’t recognize when he’s the last line of defense.

Most of his tackles also probably came 2-10 yards after the first down. After which he got up and started flexing.

  49. as a skins fan the guy was a beast hate to see him go..but brady is gonna light him up when they play..seen it before..jets needed some run defense and he can blitz..hopefully he fits in..now the skins have huge hole to fill at saftey i mean degomes and doughty..cmon

  50. this actually works out perfect!!! Landry only plays 7-8 games a year, and ironically, so do the Jets!!

    hahahaha

  51. ha ha ha ha you gotta beat Brady man…the dude is awful in coverage…but ya can stop the 5 times they run each game

  52. so I asked Bozo last week to refrain from making inflammatory comments on Pats stories and to focus on adding ideas or thoughts on Jets stuff.

Bozo, the floor is yours . . .

  53. Good bye Laron and Good ridance!!!!! When healthy he is great against the run,However he sucks against the pass.He cant cover and whats worse,he takes poor angles in pursuit! If you guys think that you are getting a good Free Agent think again….Health is the main issue here, especially that bad Achilles tendon that he refuses to have the operation on……look forward to 4 games of a heathy LL!!!!!!

  54. I liked the idea of having an intimidating hulk coming up in the box, but honestly…. the receivers in the NFCE didn’t really seem to fear him much at all.

Not nearly enough to offset all of the personal foul penalties, injuries, nicknames, et al.

Good luck with your monkey and your achilles tendon. Peace out bruh.

  55. If he can stay healthy, he’ll be great on the Jets… Unfortunately, that’s a big IF…

  56. If he stays healthy it could be a steal. But, he wont and he’ll be dissapointment. The fact that the skins are very thin at safety and let him walk says a lot.

  57. Can’t wait to see Gronk and Hernandez running right by him. Get used to looking at the back of Landry’s jersey Jets fans.

  58. Ummm…You’re expecting him to be able to cover Gronkowski????

    Happy 44th annivesary jet fans.

Your Super Bowl time is coming..every April, you talk w/the best of them.

2 division titles since 1970…says it all

  59. Thank God he will be flexing after 25 yard gains in a J-E-T-S uni next year. Guy is a total bust. Can’t cover, always injured and a malcontent. Good riddance. Archuletta 2.0 – 6 million dollars. The jets will suck again next year, and Bart Scott is still an a$$hole.

    Hail!

he didn’t ask you to ‘take it easy on him’

  61. Hope the Jets players are ready for some big hits! Well, on their own players at least… I can’t remember how many times Landry crushed a fellow Redskin when he completely missed on a hit. Probably the true reason Carlos Rogers wanted out of Washington the year before – he probably got the worst of it.

    Revis, look out.

  63. Yeh. Let’s save any “pays off” talk until you see the guy contribute for a season.

I keep remembering how Jacobs made his bones bowling over Landry for a big gain.

He’s had a good 1/4 season here or there. Good luck Jetskins.
