It’s hardly a surprise in light of his personality, but it’s worth mentioning.
When it comes to picking his next team, Peyton Manning is running the show.
Specifically, he’s dealing directly with teams, according to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network. The thinking is that, once Peyton chooses a final suitor, agent Tom Condon will take over the negotiations.
But the parameters apparently have been set -- as Mike Klis of the Denver Post recently reported, the new contract must be in the range of the five-year, $90 million deal that Manning signed in August with the Colts. (La Canfora pegs the annual value in the range of $20 million annually.)
And despite reports that a decision is coming Monday or Tuesday, La Canfora writes that the teams haven’t been told that by Peyton.
The sense of financial risk apparently is subsiding, based on his recent workouts. “I wouldn’t say he’s all the way back, but definitely he’s on the way back,” a source with “working knowledge of the process” (no, I don’t know what that means, either) told La Canfora. “You could really see [how close he is] on some throws. He’s getting there.”
He may be getting there on his arm strength, but by all appearances he’s not getting there on making a decision. At this point, that’s all anyone wants.
