Broncos hosting Dennis Dixon

ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson reports that the Denver Broncos are currently hosting quarterback Dennis Dixon for a free-agent visit.

The Broncos added Caleb Hanie as a backup option on Saturday, but Hanie won’t get clipboard-holding rights without competition. Dixon is more athletic than Hanie and was more highly regarded coming out of college.

Dixon, 27, has appeared in four NFL games, making three career starts. He has a 2-1 record with one touchdown and two interceptions. Dixon spent last season as the Steelers’ third-stringer, behind Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch.

  1. Dixon’s a stud. Like Joe Webb, he has the misfortune of a skill set that isn’t focused on ONLY QB. He isn’t a pure passer, which, I think, has kept him out of the first team reps somewhere.

  2. Don’t understand why this guy is not considered potential stater ability. He’s better than 10 starters right now. Did anyone say Sanchez, Tebow, Kolb, Skelton, Tarvaris Jackson…..

  3. Double D” is a Player it bogs my mind why Batch or Leftwich were even in front of him gell ge can hold the Clipboard where ge was in tha Burgh!! Tomlin really Blew it eith this Kids RG3 is not much better as a Prospect Trust me!!!

  4. Let me get this straight. Dixon wants a chance to be a starter and his first visit is to the team that just signed Peyton Manning?

  5. Sounds like he’s a hugh upgrade to hanie, I don’t know much about him but you fans seem to know more so im gonna route for the broncos to sign him

  6. Why now? He would have been a perfect backup for Tebow, but he couldn’t have a style further away from Manning.

  7. As a ravens fan, I actually thought this guy could be pretty good if given more chances. Coaches have been wrong before. Guess if manning ends up getting injured like many anticipate, Dixon might get his chance…

  8. Dennis Dixon is a player. He is better than at least 10 starting QBs in the league. Whoever picks him up will be getting a darn good QB. To say he was 3rd string in Pittsburgh is stretching a little. It was always the Steelers plan to put Dixon in if Ben was going to miss mutiple games. If Ben got hurt during a game then Batch would go in. This is because Batch knows the offense so well. If Leftwich had not been injured last year in preseason Batch would have been cut.

  9. As far as why Dixon and not Tebow: simple. Dixon offers a similar skill set to Tebow but without the circus. Dixon won’t have millions of people claiming that he is the victim of religious bias, that everyone is against him because he is the only guy in the league with good character, no one will be putting billboards up demanding that he play, etc. This is still more evidence that had Tebow’s fans simply behaved themselves last year – instead of calling Elway a bigot opposed to Christianity and jealous of Tebow’s fame and allegedly superior play – Tebow would still be in Denver right now learning how to be the QB of the future. Had Tebow’s fans not acted that way, or had Tebow distanced himself from his fans and denounced some of their more extreme nonsense, he would still be in Denver, and in a much better situation than in New York, sitting behind the guy who – despite the dreams of Tebow fans – will be the Jets’ QB for the next 12 years.

Wow, bro. Your fingers must be 6 inches round.

  11. I dont get it? Wasnt Elway one of the games best? HALL OF FAME QUARTER BACK!!!!!! Why in the was he not stoked about Tbo? Elway ran for his life just like Tbo did. Elway is a joke coaxing the front office to spend that kind of money on a guy instead of coming down out of the box office and coach their protege Tbo to be something other then just a christian guy running for his life and making the broncos look like they were a team. Without Tbo? they were doomed!!!!!! !!! Tbo just needed a good coach and they could have spent the other 97m on a football team instead….

  12. Why does everyone act like Elway owns the team and that hes the general manager and the head coach? Tebow has done many good things for Denver last year, but the fact is hes not a guy whos gonna put up 25+ points every game or throw more then 250+ yards a game… why do you people think Denver wanted Manning so badly? Love Tebow, but hes only gonna be successful under teams that have top 10 caliber defenses…

  13. I really hope the steelers keep Dennis Dixon. Excellent player , if Ben goes down , he would be great as second in. Batch is great also , but I think in long term , over the next few years he would be a perfect replacement for Ben , Charlie can’t scramble like Dixon , and unless the offense gets better , we’ll need a scrambler like Dixon. My whole opinion is obviously based on the future , not the present. I am hoping big Ben last as long as favre , Payton , and others.

  14. I liked Dennis when he was still in college, and was pleased to see him picked up by the Steelers, even though I knew he would never get a chance to start with Roethlisberger on the roster.

My prediction back then was that the Steelers would rehab Dixon and get him NFL-ready, and then he would move on when his rookie contract expired and look for a starting gig somewhere.

With Manning coming off his eleventy-seventh neck surgery, there’s a really high (like, more than 50%) chance that Denver’s #2 will get extended playing time.

I like Dixon’s chances in that regard. He’s a good kid, and a good quarterback. I wish him well.

I can’t believe you just compared Tebow to Elway. Blasphemy. There’s a huge difference from running first, passing second and visa versa

I can’t believe you just compared Tebow to Elway. Blasphemy. There’s a huge difference from running first, passing second and visa versa. Steve Young is a perfect example. Started out as a run first guy but when he won his ring, he was a pass first guy. Run first guys do not win championships in the modern era. Period.

  17. Its funny how people think manning is gonna fold after one hit, di you think doctors would give him the ok to play if they knew he’s one hit away from re-injuring his neck? I think not! With that due and said, it’ll be nice to have a backup who can still manage the game and get wins until your starter can return. I don’t think hanie is that guy, dixon would be a better fit

  18. Pittsburgh is blowing it big time! Leftwich is a has been! Dennis is a far better player any day of the week. Pitt blows it with Batch as well, putting him in when we play the Ravens. No wonder he gets hurt! Dennis hasn’t been able to stretch his legs &the show what he can do. He reminds me of a Kordell Stewart type of player, versatile and able to get the job done. I will always follow the Double D no matter where he goes! Stay in the Burgh bro!!!!
