William Gay tweets that he’s joining the Cardinals

Twitter has become the preferred avenue for athletes to announce their plans this offseason and William Gay is not averse to hopping on board the trend.

Early Sunday morning, Gay tweeted that “O yeah by the way I’m #Birdgang now west coast,” which, when translated out of Twitterspeak, means that he’s decided to play for the Cardinals in 2012. There’s been no official confirmation from the Cardinals, but they were one of several teams pursuing the free agent cornerback in recent days.

Gay started 15 games for the Steelers last season, but he projects to be a replacement for Richard Marshall in the nickel for the Cardinals. Patrick Peterson and A.J. Jefferson have the starting spots well in hand and Gay gave up a fairly high completion percentage to the receivers he covered in 2011. He could also see some time at safety, especially if Greg Toler returns from a torn ACL with his game totally intact.

The move to Arizona reunites Gay with Ray Horton. The Cardinals defensive coordinator was his position coach in Pittsburgh before moving to Arizona to work with Ken Whisenhunt, another former Steelers assistant/

  1. Whisenhunt’s continued formula for success: Sign as many ex-Steeler’s as he can and try to develop a young QB. Too bad bad he can’t develop a QB to save his life!

  2. Gay truly represents the stupidity that is Steeler nation. Arizona is not the west coast, they just wish they were.

  3. Of course. He actually had a relatively decent season, though. He definitely had some bad games.

He got torched in man a few times too, but so did Nnamdi and Revis.

Overall, though, he was a one of the reasons why that pass defense was tops in the league.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s hardly better than average. But he made made plays to break up some important passes.

  4. The only sad part of this is that despite not being very good, Gay is the second best CB on our roster…

  5. Good sign for Az. Starting corners will still be Peterson, Jefferson and Toler (who played better than DRC in my opinion). Hopefully he can step in and replace Marshall.

  6. My favorite William Gay moment was when Adrian Peterson knocked him over like a car hitting one of those orange traffic cones.

  7. I think gay belongs in Arizona . Gay can be all over his man pretty good , but sometimes he can get burnt . But hey , the cards knew what they were getting when they got Gay . Arizona needs Gay to cover them deep balls , but Gay bites alot and teammates won’t like that

  8. Looks like Lewis, Allen and the dude they drafted from Texas last year will be competing for the starting left corner and nickel positions and that’s not bad. I’d like to see CB Kirkpatrick from Alabama fall to 24 in the draft, though.

  9. I read that as he is gong to Seattle – what are you guys talking about Arizona for?? Last I checked they are not on the West “Coast”.

  10. Great news! Good bye and good riddance. This fool of a CB gave up big play after big play. Even I could complete a pass against him and I can’t throw the ball more than 20 yards.

  11. type in #birdgang on twitter and the cardinals come up… for the seahawks its typically #seahawks, #12thman, or #chickenhawks. Mr. Gay may be confused on the westcoast aspect of it… We consider ourselves in the southwest here in AZ. But then again I think most of the country thinks we are actually in Mexico, so Ill take west coast as a step in the right direction.

Local guy here just confirmed that its a 2 year deal for Gay.

  12. I guess that means there’s one less Gay in Pittsburgh.

I doubt it will be noticeable, though…

  13. Ravenator,

Nobody said AZ was on the west COAST. However, AZ is in the Western part of the United States. I can see reading comprehension wasn’t your best subject in school. Maybe Geography wasn’t either.

  14. A lot of people have said that Gay was the Steelers 2nd best cover corner. lol pardon me but that should be more than enough of a reason to send him packing, sure he had his moments but overall the guy couldnt cover Tom Brady coming out of the backfield. I would rather take my chances with Keenan Lewis and let Whisenhunt have our leftover rejects.

  15. Please take with you Taylor and Clark. Those 2 along with Gay are the worst set of corners and safety a team could have.

Gay played in 2011 better than all his seasons in Pittsburgh. The fact that Ryan Mundy and Keenan Lewis were playing with him along with Polamalu gave another dimension and level to the Steelers secondary.

For some reason when Clark and Taylor were in, he looked bad and the Steeler secondary was really bad.

GET RID OF TAYLOR AND CLARK, THOSE ARE USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. Cut polamalu too, he’s been horrible in the playoffs and SB. He gives up too many plays, send him to the raiders for a 1st rounder.

  17. @upyoursnfu

Look in the mirror. Another steeler fan who can’t read. Gay, said AZ was on the west coast. Wow, drink less beer, seriously.

  18. ravenator-

No where did William Gay say “Arizona is on the West Coast.”

He simply Twatted that he was going to AZ and that, in the hip-hop world, generally means “West Coast” versus “East Coast”.

But you, craventator, are so desperate to try to insult anything related to the Steelers that you display willful ignorance and wanton dipshattery.

Please- wait until you win more than a couple playoff games before you try to insult a superior football program, team, and fanbase.

But i bet you look pretty in purple :-)!

It’s not Pittsburgh West Coast” it’s “Pittsburgh West”. And if you could read a map, Arizona actually is west of Pittsburgh.

Sheesh! If you guys have to hate…at least hate with a little intelligence!

  20. All of Steeler Nation just breathed a sigh of relief and Tweeted offers to pack Will’s bags for him. Good luck with your passing D, Card fans. This guy’s gonna make you pull your hair out.

I assume this means one of the two DBs they drafted last year is ready to step in, likely Curtis Brown. Ike Teezy needs some help on that other side, then maybe he can get a little over-the-top help once in a while.

  21. Still living off that 2000 SB and all those reg season SB’s you Gayvens keep “winning”. Somebody wake me when the gayvens actually do something in a SB this decade or the next 5. Shhh little birdie shhhhhhhhhhhh.

  22. WOW !!! This Arizona free-agency off-season is so stupendous, it’s making my head spin !! What activity !! What strategy !! Re-sign Feely; re-sign Levi Brown; whiff on Manning; re-sign Doucet; start Kolb over Skelton and re-create the wonders of 2011.
Yes, Cards fans, adding Gay is the icing on this Bidwill Super Bowl cake!

  23. This is AWESOME news!!!!

Now PLEASE draft a decent CB…pretty please!
