Parcells could save Saints’ season without impacting Payton’s job

Monday’s revelation that Saints coach Sean Payton has asked one of his mentors, Bill Parcells, to take the wheel for roughly 10 months (or maybe only nine months), seemed surprising at first.  One further review, it makes plenty of sense.

Payton’s smart enough to know that, if an in-house assistant coach thrives as the interim head coach, owner Tom Benson could decide at the end of the 2012 season to give the whistle permanently to whoever leads the team through the coming minefield.

So what better way to keep Benson from deciding to promote Pete Carmichael Jr., Steve Spagnuolo, or Aaron Kromer (and in turn to let Payton go) than to have the job go to a guy who’d want it for only one year?

Equally intriguing (for us, at least) is the fact that this information was even leaked.  Since it came from Chris Mortensen, who works with Parcells at ESPN, it’s safe to assume that Parcells blabbed.  And why wouldn’t he?  Plenty of teams quietly rely on paid outside consultants, and this development reconfirms that Parcells remains highly relevant, even though he’s no longer affiliated with an NFL team on a full-time basis.

The fact that the news didn’t come from someone close to Payton, such as FOX’s Jay Glazer, makes us wonder whether Payton didn’t want word of his interest in Parcells getting out.  And Payton should have wanted to keep this one secret.  If, after all, the interim coach comes from within and believes that he wasn’t Payton’s first choice, the interim coach may be more motivated to position himself to be Benson’s first choice for 2013 and beyond.

Sad thing is you should be smart enough to know that, Payton doesn’t get to pick his replacement.

Anyways the only thing worse than their pay-for-performance system is you milking it to death in your pay-for-clicks system.

  2. Seems like it would be wiser for Benson to see if someone on staff already can succeed. Parcells is a shell of his old self as far as coaching. Seems Payton wants them to do as poorly as possible so he can feel like the missing link. He’s a brilliant coach bit the longer he hangs around. So does the cloud. If Spags or Carmichael can be successful it would be better for the team to move on with someone more ethical than Payton

  3. If Parcells insists on wearing a three-piece white suit, white hat, and gold chain up and down the sideline, demanding to be called “The Kingfish,” then I’m all for it.

  4. Makes sense to me, but what doesn’t is WHY PAYTON, LOOMIS & Benson have not offered Brees a long-term deal comensurate with his over the top performance equal to both Mannings, Brady & Rogers.

If Parcell declines & the job goes to one of the assistants and the team does well w/o Payton and Benson allows Payton to pursue other opportunities, Dallas & Jerry Jones would be happy to have him……that makes CENTS to me as well !

    Who dat?

  5. For all of us that are Saints fans and know what type of owner Tom Benson is, we know that without a doubt he is going to pocket Payton’s salary and promote form within.

The man is so cheap, the other day he opened his wallet and a moth flew out

  6. Parcells is a narcissistic, loud mouth, blow hard who just wants his fat face in the press. OVERRATED slob has been a miserale failure when he actually made GM decisions. He shot his mouth off about being able to “buy the groceries”, but it was George Young who bought the groceries with the Giants and it was only his fat face out in front in NY & NE when he was there. The actual personnel people made the decisions there and of course it was Jerry Jones making all the personnel decisions in Dallas. Miami was the only time he truly ran the whole shooting match and put his people in place and THEY SUCKED and continue to suck today. Of course it was Parcells putting his name out there with Mortensen, he can’t stand not hearing his own name, sorry POS.

  7. Saints still has lots of talent and Parcells would shore up things until Sean got back. All the other coaches still have jobs to do so they can be free to give those jobs 100% while Parcells called the shots when things were in the gray area.
Sounds like a plan to me – Geaux Saints.

Someone made mention that Sean doesn’t get to name his replacement. Sorry Benson, is giving him full range and probably asked him to locate and get in touch with whomever he thought best for the team. I am sure he didn’t just go out on his own and made that contact without prior discussion.

  8. @jackntorres…. I never thought you and I would have a similar take regarding anything Saints related, however I am also getting tired of the daily “lets kick the Saints” stuff. Its done. All the coaches have been punished thay are going to be, let’s drop the matter until the players are punished. why do we need 2 articles on Parcells? Why did we need 10 articles saying that punishments were imminent? Nowadays instead of story and then fallout from said story we get prestory, teaser, announcement of impending story, STORY, updated story, follow up story, rehash, editorial and fall out.

  9. This whole Rooney rule is stupid. Just like affirmative action is stupid. We have a black president!!! Hello???? Obama is living proof that a black person can ascend to the highest seat in the land. Do we really still need a Rooney rule? If I were a black person, I would actually be offended that someone HAS to give me an interview just because Im black. It’s crazy. Or am I crazy?

  10. How’s about this angle…

Payton asked Parcels about it because he thought it would help the team win. It’s not rocket science.

  11. isn’t that a direct conflict of interest if Parcells is still actively involved in league business while working for an affiliate….seems to me he’d have access to a LOT of information from the wrong side of the fence

  12. Sean Payton and the entire organization have to be scared to death right now. Not only did they fail to lock up Brees long term and only piss him off, the HC is suspended and now Bill Parcells is coming in to save the day??? Alot of coaches would have done anything (within the rules) to coach a team like that. Had the fans, the QB and the city to keep doing something special but ya went and cheated. I hope he loses his job for good and I hope Greg Williams gets a cart ride of his own.

  13. All the Saints need right now is a “stand-in”, and Parcells would be perfect. We are already built to win, he will keep the players focused and Spag will ignite the defense, whereas Carmicheal will call the plays. Superbowl Baby!!!!!

  14. It must be a slow day when you have that ‘anything-for-a-page-hit’ mentality. smh

  15. It just doesn’t seem right that Payton should have any say in who his replacement will be. You know, being SUSPENDED and all.

I actually agree. And I am a black. I want to be judged by what I can offer rather than the color of my skin. The Rooney rule was a good idea when it was first implemented but now it has to go. Most teams already know who they are going to hire and this Rooney rule just prolongs the process.

For the umpteenth time. Payton isn’t suspended until April 1

  18. Parcells only is concered with Parcells, and Payton only is attempting to promote through the media the installation of Parcells as the interim because Payton knows that Parcells never would be a threat to take the job on a permanent basis. Why Benson would want to bring in a guy who virtually destroyed the Dolphins franchise is beyond comprehension. Let the Tuna stay at the racetrack at Saratoga and bank all of the money he basically bagged for free in Miami.

  19. Parcells is an utter failure…don’t believe the hype. he ruined Dallas, He ruined my Phins…..don’t care about his supposed “hall of fame” career….in my opinion what he did to Dallas & Miami should eliminate him from any posture in football lore….

    Run away Nahleans…run away!!!

What could go wrong? He did wonders in Miami.

He helped win an AFC East title.

  21. If Al Davis was still alive and owned the Saints, then Sean Payton’s wife would be the interim head coach. Several more women would be hired by the Saints including Mrs. Vilma, Mrs. Loomis, and Mrs. Vitt.

  22. Piss on the Rooney Rule. Thats just a way to give a job to someone out of pity and the color of his skin, than give it to the right man for the job! Its Reverse discrimination. How many white men are guaranteed an interview? That crutch needs to be done away with…

  23. As long as Parcells doesn’t care that he’d be forever known as an enabler of one of the biggest scumbags ever in sports history, or, for that matter, what Benson would also be known for; another enabler, then it could be a plan to save his job, which would be a travesty.

Thing is, if Payton comes back to coach any team, he’ll definitely take Mike Vick’s place as the most hated man in football.

  24. Game has passed Parcells by. He would destroy the Saints if he came in.

Better off having Brees be the Player/Coach. LOL!
