Goodell on Parcells in New Orleans: “I’m sure he’ll do a good job”

Getty Images

We don’t know whether the Saints will hire Bill Parcells as their interim head coach during Sean Payton’s suspension, but the man who suspended Payton is amenable to the idea.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told the Associated Press today that he thinks if the Saints choose Parcells, then they’ve chosen well.

“That’s their decision. They need to make those decisions and we’ll move forward,” Goodell said. “Bill’s a great coach, and I’m sure [he] will add a lot of personality and intrigue. And he’s as competitive as they get so I’m sure he’ll do a good job.”

The major issue that the Associated Press story on Goodell’s comments didn’t address is that the Saints can’t hire Parcells without first interviewing a minority candidate. And as it becomes more apparent that the Saints are locked in on Parcells as their choice, there may be no minority candidates willing to interview.

What Goodell did say is that he trusts that Saints owner Tom Benson will follow all the necessary procedures.

“These are management decisions that Tom Benson will have to sign off on,” Goodell said. “He will get recommendations, I’m sure from Sean and Mickey [Loomis] and others, and make his determination. If it ends up being Parcells, then they’ve gone through the full process.”

  1. Does anyone really care what GODdell thinks. He won’t be around to see another season!

  2. Parcels isn’t needed in New Orleans. When was the last time he won anything significant?? Yeah I said it.

  3. ROFL…”What Goodell did say is that he trusts that Saints owner Tom Benson will follow all the necessary procedures.”

Trust & Saints in the same sentence…thank you PFT for making me laugh outloud at work

    apparently so Einstein

  6. The Saints broke the rules… They have to pay. Any other team would have to do the same thing. Not sure why all these Saints fans are pissy.
They tried to hurt other players, now they have to pay the price!!!

  7. LISTEN FELLOW SAINTS FANS….Make your voice be heard. Only support saints football locally. Cancel Nfl Network, don’t watch any non saints games on TV. Watch ESPN or HBO or something else. put this on your facebook. Call your local sports radio stations, TELL YOUR FRIENDS , RELATIVES, COWORKERS. LETS MAKE THIS VIRAL. LETS GET THE WHOLE GULF COAST INVOLVED. HIT GOODELL IN THE POCKETS. SUPPORT THE SAINTS ONLY.

  8. So Godell is a bad person just because he suspended Payton for trying to hurt other teams players?

    WOW!!!

  9. @mrslay1, are you saying that a Saints fan is going to murder him? What are you talking about. He has the support of the owners (After announcing the penalties) and his contract has been extended.

  10. I don’t get the Goodell haters out there. He’s a helluva lot better than Bud Selig or that clown that runs the NBA.

  11. On the whole idea of having to satisfy the Rooney Rule…can’t they just interview a minority candidate currently on their staff who would be willing to take part in a sham interview process? Or does it have to come from outside the organization?

  12. Sorry Mrslay, but unless he’s dead, he’ll be here- fining and suspending and sending teams overseas for home games.

  13. And as it becomes more apparent that the Saints are locked in on Parcells as their choice, there may be no minority candidates willing to interview.
    —————————————

I don’t see why they couldn’t just interview Travis Jones (assistant defensive line coach) or Henry Ellard (wide receivers coach). Yes, everyone would know it was a scam but it seems it would be within the letter of the Rooney rule.

If a team covets a particular coach, they can always find someone to interview. It is kinda why the rule is often a joke.

  14. Getting bored with all the anti-Goodell talk.

By all accounts the contract with the players is a big win for the owners. New deals for broadcast and shoes and everything else are best ever. He’s holding players and coaches accountable for their behavior on and off the field.

He’s not going anywhere for a long time, and I’m glad.

  15. Just hire Parcells as an assistant. Then, promote him from within the next day. If he is promoted from within, the Rooney Rule does not apply here.

Agreed, The way it’s written does often lead to sham interviews, but I still support it.

It wasn’t written in order to force teams to hire a minority HC,but to give those candidates much needed experience for future interviews where they are legitimate contenders for the open job.

The first time I remember a team skirting the rule was the Lions. it was no secret they wanted Marriucchi after he was fired by the Niners. He was also the best candidate available. IIRC,Tags fined the Lions for not adhering to the Rooney Rule.

  17. The Führer has given the Saints permission to interview a minority candidate on its staff, so they don’t have to go outside the organization. FREE SEAN PAYTON!!!!

  18. PFT already wrote a story about Ellard being eligible to interview to satisfy the Rooney Rule. Apparently, MDS didn’t get the memo.

  19. Parcells is a has been. He hasn’t won a thing since he left the Giants. The last team he had under his control is a league doormat. He will destroy whats left of the Saints with his arrogance. There is a good reason why he did not make the first ballot into the HOF. If he ever gets in, I hope it’s after he dies. He does not deserve that moment in life. The Saints will do better promoting from within.

  20. Funny how life plays out. Funny how the Rooney Rule might not apply for this first-of-kind temporary head coaching job. Let the Saints hire whom they want. The got enough problems that aren’t funny at all.

I think I feel bad for Drew Breese…could he not have known?

  21. Why are Saints fans so mad? You’re going to “boycott” the NFL because your team was caught cheating, then lied about it multiple times and you’re mad at the punishment??? Are you serious? Try losing a first round pick and ESPN calling you cheaters for taping 6 plays and 23 seconds of tape, then volunteering info to the league that they use against you and leak to fans. then come crying.

  22. Although many of them are behaving wretchedly, it’s not the fault of Saints’ fans that some of their coaches are dogs. I think Parcells is a brilliant guy (as a coach, not a GM) and miss seeing him on the sidelines and especially in post-game press conferences. Would be nice to have him back.

  23. Parcells would be an interim coach. Where does the Rooney Rule apply? The Rooney Rule was designed for HEAD coaches, not a temporary replacement coach. Loopholes are made to be jumped through. The “fine and outstanding” team at PFT (laughing) seems to have overlooked this.

  24. @305fan …

He hasn’t won a thing since he left the Giants?? Who are you and how did you get on this site?? Dude, he won two Super Bowls with the Giants, took the Pats to the Super Bowl, and led both the Jets and the Cowboys to the playoffs. He’s taken four different teams to the playoffs. Some coaches can’t seem to get one team out of the locker room!

    Bitter much?

  29. I really don’t buy Parcells is a has been. The current Super Bowl winning coach is Tom Coughlin who was an assistant under Parcells and is just as old school. Parcells has shown the ability to take as a head coach dismal teams into contention. Now he can’t for one year coach a contender to playoff wins. Even Barry Switzer and Norve Turner were able to do that. I think for one year Parcells still has what it takes.

  30. The only way to really be heard is cut the Nfl advertisements in the gulf region. Support the saints locally. If Goodell doesn’t reduce the penalties. Look we deserve to be punished for the cover up but not excessive and malicious penalties and make it up as I go suspensions. Start now ……use the web and local media. I canceled the NFL network and won’t watch monday night football unless the saints are playing. Spread the word don’t take no for an answer.

  31. Could careless who the evil Saint’s get to interim coach for them or Payton getting suspended as well. Enjoy that tainted trophy. The fact that it will always have a smear on it in is punishment enough.

  32. Goodell is the reason football is the most watched among the NBA and MLB. How can you hate a guy for disciplining the saints for their wrong doing? If he sat back and done nothing, the NFL would be out of control and not pleasant to watch. Like the NFL, all jobs have rules and rule changes weather you like it or not and if you break those rules, you should be punished.

  33. Translation:
“Ah, dat’s fine, you’re going to have to get someone . . . sure as hell won’t be Sean. Might as well be warmed over burnt-out Tuna.”

  34. Why are the writers on this site so hung up on the Rooney rule.

I’m a Saints fan, and I’m not convinced that hiring Parcells is a good idea, but if that is what they want to do, then they should have the right to do it.

This is not a typical situation where a team is in need of a head coach and will be sifting through multiple applicants.

It’s already been acknowledged that interviews with minority candidates would be a sham, so why should anyone insist that they jump through the hoops. It’s a waste of everyone’s time.

**1st Team in History of NFL to secure home field advantage throughout playoffs and win a superbowl at home.

The Saints will take those types of asterisks.

  42. Parcells is NOT going to take over as head coach of the Saints. If he did, it would reset the clock on his chances of getting in to Canton. Anyone who thinks that the Tuna doesn’t care about being enshrined is kidding themselves.

  43. Money grubber Goodell can’t wait to have Parcells in the HC spot in NOLA because he’s dreaming of all the $$$ the televised games will make the NFL. Imagine the viewership for the NOLA Dallas game.

Your coach ignored direct orders from your owner. He took money from a convicted felon to cheat the salary cap and fund an illegal bounty program designed to cause serious and/or potentially career-ending injury to opposing players. And he lied about it to the league for two years. The only reason a convicted felon would want to spend his own money to fund your bounty program is if he were making it back somewhere else–say, by laying bets on the games. And your team’s players, who followed your coach’s instructions, are looking at suspension, possible criminal charges, and possible IRS investigations.

But you think the NFL is out to get you and the rest of us are inbreds?

    God help you.

  49. Goodell is right. The Big Tuna will do well here. He has a history of making good teams better and making bad teams contenders.

In regards to the bounties, entire games were based around them as late as 1989. “Bounty Bowl I” and “Bounty Bowl II”. Go look them up.

  50. Several sources are going to be providing evidence that proves Goodell’s personal grudge against Sean Payton. This all may be heading to court, and I doubt that Goodell will be commissioner when the season starts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. The owners will set up new guidelines on the next commissioner’s ability to suspend.

  51. “They tried to hurt other players, now they have to pay the price!!!”

I usually avoid these types of national forums because they are typically loaded with non stop smack. They are also loaded with immature people loaded with jealousy. if you don’t hate the Saints, the congrats to you. You have somewhat of a level head.

There are those opposing fans who want to put Payton somewhere between Hitler and Atilla the Hun however.

I am still happy about the fact fans of other teams hate us. I also realize it’s jealousy and if you asked them would they be defending their team if it happened to them, they’d say yes. In the end, I wouldn’t change a thing. When tracy Porter picked off that Manning pass, the first thing I did was turn to my daughter and say Daddy can now die in peace. That feeling will never change.

There will be no * or stain on the Saints Lombardi. That’s something only a jealous fan would say. The saints won the title with an average defense. I agree Bountygate was wrong, but in no way did it give the Saints an unfair competitive advantage on the field. The only way the title could ever be stripped if it was proven a team had conspired with gamblers to fix the games final outcome. even then, you’d have to have the opponent involved as well.

  53. If Goodell is in favor of Parcells coaching the Saints, then I’m suspicious. Is this part of his cruel and unusual punishment that Sean Payton didn’t deserve. It’s not like he filmed the other team’s signals for an unfair advantage towards the outcome of a game. All he did was pay no attention to the normal tough talk that players do to get worked up before a game. Have you heard what’s said at a high school pep rally?

  54. Though I cannot agree with GODdell on anything, this was Sean Paytons idea or so we were told.
