Gerhart’s knee injury won’t keep him from participating in OTAs

On December 24, Vikings running back Adrian Peterson suffered a torn ACL in his knee. On January 1, Vikings running back Toby Gerhart suffered a knee injury of his own, a torn MCL.

The goal for Peterson is to be ready to go by Week One. The goal for Gerhart is to be ready for the start of Organized Team Activities.

“I should be able to do everything once we get back,” Gerhart tells Jeremy Fowler of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. “I’m still strengthening the quad, and the MCL has healed on its own. The key is just doing more running. I still get a little soreness when I run, but that goes away the next day. I’m on track.”

Gerhart, a second-round pick in 2010, will be relied upon as the lead dog as Peterson continues to heal. Even after Peterson returns, Gerhart will likely get plenty of touches this season, given that Peterson will still be working his way back toward his prior form.
