Janoris Jenkins “kept smoking” at North Alabama

Cornerback prospect Janoris Jenkins was kicked off the Florida Gators’ football team last April after three marijuana-related arrests. Jenkins opted against the NFL supplemental draft, and played his senior season for Terry Bowden at North Alabama.

But Jenkins didn’t turn over a new leaf.

NFL Network’s Albert Breer reports that Jenkins has revealed in pre-draft team interviews that he didn’t stop smoking at the Division II school. While the truthfulness is somewhat honorable, league executives weren’t exactly pleased to hear it.

“This is a multiple offender of the drug policy in college, and it’s not like there were no character concerns at North Alabama,” one AFC personnel executive told Breer. “He had multiple opportunities to get away from it. He didn’t at Florida, and he went to North Alabama and he wasn’t clean there. … It was more of the same.”

Several, if not most, NFL evaluators consider Jenkins the second best on-field cornerback prospect in the 2012 draft, behind only LSU’s Morris Claiborne. But Jenkins may not even be drafted in the first round.

“He gets to North Alabama, and he’s still smoking because he’s got this big-fish, little-pond thing going,” one NFC executive said. “I don’t see him going in the first round, and a lot of teams have him off their board completely.”

An AFC college scout told Breer that he doesn’t believe Jenkins is a bad guy. But he still would want no part of Jenkins in the first round of the draft.

“He’s not a bad person,” said the scout. “He just makes a lot of dumb, dumb mistakes. He just smokes and [has sex], and that’s essentially what it is. … And there’s just awful decision-making associated with that. I don’t think he’s a bad person. But he has a lot of soul-searching to do.

“I wouldn’t touch him in the first round.”

That’s all I did when I was in my early 20’s, but at the same time, I wasn’t trying to get in the NFL, I was ……………. I don’t even remember what i was trying to do with my life!!!!!

  4. If he is available at Pick 32 Giants should grab him because that front office and Coughlin would put him in line. They would have great depth at corner with Webster, Thomas, Amukamara, Molden etc.

  5. If he’s that great of a QB Vikings have been willing to gamble on players like this. However, this guy might be too damaged for any team…

  6. Hey losers, keep begging that your horrible franchise takes this kid in the first while the JETS take an honorable kid like Ingram or Mercilus with our first and watch NE and Buffalo tremble in fear.

  7. But yet most of these execs would gladly draft people who shoot themselves, others, and even family members at the club with guns and tossing champagne bottles at peoples heads.

Yea, not the guy sitting on his couch watching a movie and smoking a bong.

    That guys a nono

  8. He’s not even in the nfl and he’s had how many drug incidents? Oh yeaaahhhh first rounder.

  9. Nothing wrong with the having sex part only if done responsibly, however he doth likes Mary Jane a little bit much. Whats that song I am in love with Mary Jane….

  10. “He gets to North Alabama, and he’s still smoking because he’s got this big-fish, little-pond thing going,” one NFC executive said.

People smoke weed because they smoke weed. It has nothing to do with a big-fish, little-pond thing.

  11. He is going to have to start smoking some seriously skanky bud…becasue he is losing a ton of cash with this freefall in the draft.

  12. Hope he does spliff I mean slip to the 2nd round. Sounds like a perfect fit for the Vikings…Minneasober!

  13. Wake and Bake! Oh, and lose several million dollars while you’re at it as you slide down the board.

This is the definition of an “idiot wrapped in a moron”.

  14. I don’t think its just that he lit up the gunja, its that he didn’t stop even after having to switch to division II. That’s more telling than anything. These guys are heavily scrutinized for a reason. They have now become investment opportunities. you don’t go “fixer upper” in the 1st round. What are these kids doing? You seriously can’t give up the MJ for a little while to become filthy rich?

  15. This is a stupid reason not to draft someone. It should be legal and the fact that it isn’t is what’s truly criminal. I would love to see the Ravens take him but we’re pretty set at CB.

  17. the government dumb for not legalizing it to begin with, but if i was in the nfl, i would never touch it. plain and simple. it’s the differences between millions of dollars and a joint.

  18. Thanks, Urban for bringing and keeping guys like this into the program. You have once again made all the Gator alumni proud.

  19. “Relatively simple my Dear Watson” The SMOKE is better in Alabama then in Flordia, been to Alabama and no doubt the women are smoking too!!!

  20. It’s the time of year where people with an agenda try to drive players value down due to drugs wonderlichts etc. ain’t nothing new here.. Keep moving people

  21. Pacman and Mauluga take the rookie Jenkins out for a night on the town… Someone tell me how this story ends…

  22. He should stop smoking cigarettes – just not good for you. I suggest he wear condoms too, a lot of dream-killers out there. I think he has met 4 so far.

  23. Whomever said that he had a multi-million dollar talent and ten cent intelligent has over valued his intelligence.

  24. if niners could get him late second round id be all for it…walks in that locker rooms sees willis, justin smith and the boys…might be good for him.

  25. It’s just weed. It should be legal anyway. If taken by team with solid leaders they will set him straight. Hope he falls to jets in second round. Maybe will cost him being first rounder, but if he is that good he is worth the risk. A lot of guarantees have flopped, so why not take the risk.

  26. Teams don’t care if players smoke weed they care if players get suspended for smoking weed that is why he will drop.

A pathetic response from a pathetic Vikings fan refering to his pathetic team. At least you are keeping it real.

  30. Well, the bright side for him is he wont get a long rookie contract. This means he’ll have the chance to prove himself and get the big bucks 2nd contract sooner. Now the question is, will he rise to the occasion or just stay a man/boy?

  32. “He just smokes and [has sex], and that’s essentially what it is. … ”

    Livin’ the dream.

  33. an elite level talent with weed issues?

Teams will be smart to pass on him, just as they were Harvin, Hernandez, Dez, etc etc

  34. As I pointed out before Jimmy Smith fell pretty far for a guy who was the top cover corner in his class. Smith was also helped by being a massive corner at 6’2 and 210lbs, whats this Jenkins kid 5’9 ish and 185? He also doesn’t have half of Smith’s resume, Smith only allowed something like 22 receptions against him his LAST TWO YEARS doubt Jenkins was that much of a factor.

If Smith fell that far without any real set in stone red flags and his rare size for the posistion then Jenkins will plummet. I see third or fourth round written all over him.

  35. To those asking what the big deal is, its not that teams/fans really care if he smokes or not. It’s that if you draft him, you know you only get a season or two before he’s suspended many many games. Waste of a draft pick.

  36. These executives intentionally attempt to dictate where this guy falls in the draft, yet they are too cowardly to lend their names to these scurrilous comments? What kind of lowlife would “print” or repost anything they have to say?

  37. He’s gonna go to my Vikes, and he’s gonna flame out like Dimitrius Underwood.

  38. What percentage of NFL players enjoy gonja would you say?

    35%? 50%? 75%? 90%

What percent of the country does?

    What about the NBA?

Is Jenkins really in the minority?

Some team will “take a chance” and get the 2nd best CB in draft.

  39. Doing the doobage doesn’t make him a bad guy. It just makes him unfit for the NFL: their league-their rules. However, it is a rather stoned out hippy idea that Jenkins obviously feels entitled to get paid millions to play a kids’ game. Getting high & blazin’ his life away is clearly more important to him than pro football. Again, that doesn’t make him a bad guy it just makes him unfit for the NFL.
And no, I’m not a fan of the mary jane. I do however advocate for it’s being legalized. We could tax the heck out of it & balance nearly any halfway reasonable budget. If it would become legal I believe there should still be a few restrictions including no driving while high, as well as no being high during certain occupations: health care, law enforcement, and anything else where you’re responsible for someone else’s safety or health, or being an obvious role model for kids (like pro sports players).

yeah but they weren’t in line for millions of dollars either. Plus I think he has six kids by 8 different moms.

  41. This is just a bunch of smoke coming from some team at the bottom the first round that wants him to drop them. Jenkins will be a first round pick.

  42. I was under the impression that Roger Goodell threatened severe punishment to anyone disclosing any private information from the NFL Combine. “Private information” included drug tests, information obtained in interviews, and wonderlic scores. Now you have NFL Network disclosing something that possibly fits into two of the three “private” categories not to be discussed?

    Confusing.

  43. OMG!!! He smoked Weed! He had sex too?! In college no less. How could he possibly excel at playing football? Who gives a crap. Draft him on his performance.

  44. pacman jones 2.0 …… Atleast chris henry was smart enough to not get caught doing it. Sad thing about Chris Henry was he finally turned his life around, and his gf gets away with manslaughter, no charges, all because the cops didnt like him. Such a sad story overall

Please…….jealous? Of what? Of not being able to celebrate being a fan of a Lombardi-less team? Of not being a fan of a team that arguably has the worst record in history of pro-sports of losing in the big games? Of being a fan of a team who was part of inarguably the dumbest trade(Hershel Walker) in NFL history. Like I said, a dopey vikequeef toad. dopey team, dopey everything.

  47. Smokin weed makes you a bad person? Some of my friends smoke and they have jobs, house payment, car payment, etc..they dont steal or cause any trouble and are law abiding citizens…well except for the whole weed thing.

  48. It’s not the fact that he smokes pot that’s disturbing, it’s his inability to make good decisions that make him a risky pick. Imagine the trouble he can find with a couple million dollars in the bank.

  49. So let me get this straight in a league where you get the same suspension as coach who ask his players to hit the other team hard when you drink and drive and KILL someone, smoking pot is the end of the world ???

Please. America needs to grow up. Perhaps, like Ricky Williams Mr. Jenkins doesn’t want to put horrible addictive pain killers in his body and is smart enough to know that Pot has the same pain killing affects, in fact some would say it does a better job, with less impairment and less chance of side effects.

The truth is NFL players should be smoking pot during the week after games. It would do them wonders as far as healing and regeneration. It would also help to stem the tide of addiction in pro football, opps didn’t mean to say that out loud. The NFL doesn’t want to ever talk about how many players use and abuse opiates way beyond their playing years. But god for bid the kid from Florida smokes pot.

D.A.R.E. is for 8 year olds who don’t understand they are being lied too. Do your own research morons.

  50. Janoris, Ricky Williams tried that approach…even going on 60 minutes to talk about.

Then he found out he doesn’t get paid to sit at home and get stoned.

  51. The weed isn’t what’s going to take him down. As soon as he sign’s his first contract, be it a 1st round, 2nd round – he going to want mo money. Cuz those three mothers are going to get 33 percent of what ever he makes off the top, which means he’s gonna need mo money!!!! If he has a good to great rookie season he will hold out for – you guessed it – mo money!!!!!!!!

  52. Welcome to the Vikings we have plenty off purp just ask harvin purp n yellow purp n yellow haha but seriously wouldnt surprise me if he land with the vike n become a pro bowler

  53. @hatesycophants

What if these unnamed scouts and executives (who are doing their job BTW) get overruled by a controlling owner like Snyder or Jones and are forced to draft Jenkins? Might put their job in considerable danger IMO if the owner gets an idea that his scouting department is not on a page it should be.

But of course no one would say these things if Jenkins wasn’t such an idiot. I mean this isn’t Notre Dame here, dude got kicked off an SEC school. Again, he got kicked off an SEC school. Those teams while amazing and crank out NFL talent (and a fair share of busts because of character issues) like no other confrence are famous for their lax player standards.

  54. “He just smokes and [has sex]”

I’m assuming this is also true of many players already in the league. I respect the dude even more for being upfront bout it. Now he’ll just have to prove he can play football too.

  56. Florida boy. That is how they do it in this state. Keepin it real!!!! OH that might get you in trouble though. Smart isn’t something usually thought of.

  57. So, I love the line: “I wouldn’t touch him in the 1st Round”. Which implies, I would in the second.

My question is, why would you waste even a 7th if the kid can’t stay on the field.

And everyone that says “legalize it”, misses the point—the kid lacks discipline.

  58. ‘He just smokes and has sex’.

Damn, sounds perfect to me…throw in a couple beers and a round of 18 and I’m in heaven. 🙂

  59. Smoke screen….no pun intended. Classic case of a team putting info out there to drop a player’s stock in order to draft him

  60. Sooo… I’m not saying I didn’t do it (smoke-up) in college, but what is wrong with the old fashioned “just stop doing it” method? I always hear people say, “legalize it,” but I’m pretty sure more would be accomplished just not doing it anymore, then waiting for it to be legalized (definitely less would be sacrificed). Also, if it doesn’t have such a negative side-effect, why can’t people prioritize “great” success over doing it?

  61. He’s the type of talent you can’t rely upon. I predict his first drug suspension will occur within the first 12 months of his signing. He might make it through the season without getting caught but will get nailed during his first off-season.

  62. I see many replies saying “it’s just weed” and “it should be legal anyway”, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I get that. But even if it is legal, players in the NFL still wouldn’t be able to do it. When they sign a contract one of the stipulations is that they will not smoke weed. You want to play in the NFL, you have to agree to not to do it. Period.

AFAIK, the CFL doesn’t seem to have such restrictions on their players. He won’t make any money, but he won’t be tested either.

  63. Kid already got kicked off FL for THREE weed arrests. Lol. Silly. I dont care about weed smokers but I care about arrests. Means you just dont care or worse…IDIOT. No thanks on my team. I want guys if they smoke weed…smart/care enough not to get caught

  64. MUCH WORSE things he could be doing than toking up. Its time this hypocritical society grows the F up about pot. I’d rather he be @ home toking up and laying pipe than out @ the club where trouble can find you in an instant.

    ——————————————————–
He can’t perform if he is suspended, idiot. It has nothing to do with how he plays football. He was arrested several times, and has four kids under the age of three, from three different women. The guy is a head case, and he has zero chance of having a successful career. I wouldn’t sign him as an undrafted player. 3 arrests, 4 kids. You want to give him millions of dollars thinking he deserves an 8th chance?

  69. 6 rings? Nobody cares yo forreal, only steeler nation cares. I know you punk squealer fans are salty that the superior Ravens beat you twice last year but come on son, we BALL SO HARD

  70. I was thinking he would be a great pick up for the niners but then remembered northern Cali has the best weed and I don’t think that would work with the niners

  71. I could care less how much weed he smokes, but he wants to be an NFL player. Doesn’t the NFL have a rule against banned substances???? He got kicked out of FL because he wouldn’t give up the weed, and he still smoked it at AL. If he wants to be a pothead his whole life (in between fathering kids because I guess his pot-filled head doesn’t know what a condom is), fine. But don’t expect someone to invest a sh*t load of money on you when you choose to continue behavior that some see as risky.

It’s his decision-making that’s a cause for concern here. He’s basically thumbing his nose at the very people who could make him very rich (well, until all the baby mamas line up for their fair share). He’s going to find out that, in the real world, you don’t get to dictate the rules. As far as I’m concerned, he can smoke his life away while losing millions at the same time. Doesn’t bother me at all.

6 kids by 8 different moms? How is that even possible? Did couple of the moms take turn caring some of those kids?

  73. Sounds like this guy is destined to be drafted by the Bengals.

Who wants to start a pool on when he will be suspended for substance abuse?

I got dibs on week 4 of the preseason….

  74. Yeah because NFL execs dont do any drugs or bang any broads …. get off your high horses. I smoked weed and had lots of sex until I was 30 and got married …. now my wife wont let me do either.

  75. “With their first pick, the Cincinnati Bengals select Janoris Jenkins, North Alabama”

  76. Jenkins should not be drafted until the the very last pick for whoever decides they want to waste that pick on a guy who will be suspended for 4 games, then a seson, then 2 season and then for good. This idiot has all the talent to make an impact on about any NFL team. Problem is, he would rather smoke pot thaan get paid millions of dollars to play football.

  77. I say legalize it and allow them to light up on the bench or sidelines of all games (NFL< NBA<MLB< NHL) After watching a few games of stoned players screwing around, the humor will wear off, and we'll be clamoring for them to ban it.

  78. To everyone saying, just legalize it already. What’s to say the NFL would say it’s cool and take it off their own banned drugs list.

There are plenty of LEGAL products that you and I could take on that list that would not have us spend a day in jail or even a ticket, yet suspends players every year.

Pot would very likely stay on the banned drugs list.

  79. I understand most everyone’s post is about the pot smoking and that will have an adverse effect on him – he will be in the “program” as soon as he signs his contract, but he can, if he wants to, decide not to put the the “reefer madness” to his lips. The children are a different matter. As I posted earlier, the mom’s are going to get money – and alot of money. All the players you have read about lately filing for bankruptcy have one thing in common. They all have many children by many mothers who were all getting a share of his contract. Sure smoking pot and having sex is fun but now he’s going to have to pay the piper. In turn he will resent the fact they are getting “his money” but there won’t be a thing he can do about it. The court will garnish his pay and he will be behind almost before he cashes his first check. He just doesn’t understand he’s not going to be as “well off” as he thinks he will be. Thanks for readin’

  80. OK….HOW MANY “BALLERS” DO NOT SMOKE?

Uh, that would be like one or two in all of D1 ball….

Ah, come on…He is a very poor kid who has worked his ass off and will soon be a multi millionaire and will probably cost himself a few of those potential millions for some weed…

Many NFL players smoke…Ever heard of the whiz-a-nator (?) geez people…He should be a fine pro and he actually seems to grade higher in some areas than Mo Clay…No pun intended.

Someone in the late first or early second will snap him up…I just am proud as hell he did NOT LIE!

  81. Janoris is to blame here but Terry Bowden should be fired he took this kid in and knew why he was kicked off the Florida Gators there should have been weekly testing of the pothead. Bowden’s wanted to win more than do the right thing imagine that a coach not doin the right thing.

  82. For everyone saying “Who cares, it’s just pot!”:

I don’t think NFL executives care as much about the pot smoking as they do about his intelligence and passion for the game of football. He was kicked out of one of the most prestigious college football programs in the country for smoking weed, and continued to smoke even though he knew it could hurt his stock going into the NFL. That reeks of poor decision-making at best and lack of intelligence at the worst, neither of which is a quality many NFL teams will overlook in the 1st round of the draft.
