Checking in on the Raiders

Plenty of Raiders fans have wanted more coverage of the Raiders on PFT Live.  So we devoted an entire segment to the Silver and Black on Monday, with the help of Paul Gutierrez of CSNBayArea.com.

Paul and yours truly addressed a wide range of issues relating to the Raiders, including the perception that the team is taking a step backward in the hopes of taking multiple steps forward, the depth chart at each skill position, the plans for the draft, whether a 4-3 or 3-4 defense will be used, and all sorts of other things.

So, Raiders fans, we held up our end of the bargain by creating it.  Now, hold up your end of the bargain by watching it.

  1. Oakland fans such as the one above set out to deliver the “R-A-I-D-E-R-S” but they only get as far as “Arrrr…” and can’t remember the rest.

    “Arrr….Arrrrr…Arrrr….”.

  2. 6 and 10. 4th place in the AFC West.
Trade away the first 4 picks of the 2013 draft looking for yet another solution at quarterback.

  3. I think these guys could be the sleeper team of the AFC West. If they stay healthy I can see their offense being deadly. I wouldn’t be so quick to say they’re taking some steps back this year. I think they have a legitimate shot at the division. This is coming from a 49er fan who lives in San Diego. I simply think they’re going to be stron on offense this year, if they stay healthy

  4. Getting rid of Hue Jackson was the best thing the Raiders could do for the Chargers, Broncos and Chiefs. Jackson is one of the best play callers in the NFL.

On top of that, cutting starters and replacing them with journeymen and 2nd teamers means the home blackouts will continue in Oakland as the Raiders struggle to stay out of the division cellar.

I too see a 4th place finish with 6 wins max.

  5. With the defensive players we currently have, we’re still looking at a 4-3. We just don’t have the LB talent for a 3-4 at this point. Losing Henderson, we’ll be looking for a NT\DT but we will probably draft a LB in the 3rd or 4th round since LB is our weakest position. OL is currently set and Barksdale the 1st man off the bench if we have an injury. Don’t be surprise to see a center drafted since we don’t have anyone behind Wisniewski. At RB, McFadden, Taiwan Jones and Goodson are set at RB. It’s because if the Raiders have two FBs and use Marcel Reece as more of a weapon, it can offset the lost of Bush. Reece can be that old school FB weapon for the offense if used correctly.
I hate to use a SF 49er comparison, but the FB in a West Coast offense is a very key position. Tom Rathman was key. Reece has the best hands in the NFL at FB and I wouldn’t be surprise if he’s the fastest FB in the NFL. Got to get him the ball more often to limit McFadden’s touches.

  6. They took a big step backwards when they traded for Carson Palmer. In case I haven’t said it before, thanks for the first round pick this year and the 2nd round pick next year. Signed, all Bengal fans.

  7. Humbolt- stick to the charger posts and your 7th annual superbowl claim. We go way back buddy, and your rant is trite. The RAIDERS are set on a new era, under the control of someone who has intricate knowlwdge of “todays game”. The chargers on the other hand are still owned by the spanos clan, ruled over by aj “I run all my best players out of town” smith and coached by the infamous norvelle turner. Turn off the lights on the way out humbolt, you’re last to realize the party is over for the chargers. They had ten years to get something done and failed to do so. Time to turn the page charger fan, it’s all over.

  8. Can’t wait to see the Raiders schedule tomorrow. Just the fact the Raiders have an explosive offense should garner atleast 1 sunday night appearance and an opening monday night game

So consintantly getting out coached and not being able to adjust or even score points in the 2nd half makes him one of the best play callers in the NFL?
I’m shocked that the doltz didn’t hire him as OC.
Hue is not afraid to call cute plays, that’s all.

TOO bad The Bungles will always suck no matter how many picks they get and from who. it wont matter even browns fans know that their team is a notch above yours.

  11. The raiders sucked last year yet again, they had a suckfull free agency period, and they are already guaranteed to suck in the draft this year, all which adds up to suck. It must suck to be a raider fan. At least Al Davis is still dead, raider fan has that going for him.

  12. Got to give the Raiders credit … if you need a pic of a fan dressed up like an idiot you can always depend on them.

  13. The Raiders are getting back on track under McKenzie. He was left such a cap mess, not to mention limited draft options with no 1st or 2nd, that this year he has had to bargain hunt. The upside is that it gives the new coaches a year to really evaluate guys like Valdeer and the young d-backs.

I think the Raiders are going forward, but they will probably be somewhere in the 6-10 to 8-8 range this year as they get things turned around.

If McFadden can stay healthy they are as dangerous as anyone in the league in any given game, though. They will not be the extra-bye for opponents they were under Cable, that’s for sure.

So is Norv Turner. He just isn’t real good as a head coach. The Raiders had a first year coach last season, their owner died, their starting QB went on IR, and they still won as many games as the Chargers. humb0lt wouldn’t be so annoying if he wasn’t so ignorant.

  15. Say what you want about the Raiders, about half the league did worse last year. Dont hear anyone talking about how bad those teams suck.

  16. The Raiders did good last year considering the circumstances, like mentioned above, losing Al Davis, losing starting QB, Losing DMC when he was having an MVP type season until he got hurt week 6 and never returned, losing Ford and D Moore for several weeks, and we still managed to go 8-8 and had a three way tie for the division.

The Raiders have ben on the right track for the last couple of years, they swept the West in 2010 and finished 8-8, they had several obstacles to over come last year and still managed a 8-8 season. If my memeory is right the last time the Raiders had back to back 8-8 seasons, they ended up going on a nice little run for awhile.

With that said, the Raiders have as good of chance as anybody to win the AFCW next year

don’t forget our stud RB went down too…
we were one of the most maligned teams in the league last year

  18. Offense is essentially the same minus Satele and Boss. Still going to be pretty explosive. Wiz at C is much better than with Satele and Boss didn’t exactly light the world on fire. So not too worried about that side of the ball but the other teams should be.

Defense was the achilles heal, IMO. Chucky B was in way over his head. Getting rid of him was the biggest off season move as far as I’m concerned. Also, I’d like to thank the Qieefs for signing Stanford. That guy is a PI machine. And how many TDs did he give up? Can’t wait for Palmer to burn him repeatedly.

Reggie is modernizing the OAK FO and spending wisely. If anybody can find the diamonds in the rough, this guy can. And he won’t be overpaying for them or any player for that matter. He’ll also let DA coach what is what I really dig.

No, this ain’t your grandpappy’s Raiders.

    Let the Hater’s hate!

  19. I getting tried of the Bengal fans … seriously give it a rest. Enjoy your #1 pick … I bet Palmer does better than your #1 pick and the team that will be taking a step backwards is the Bengals.

  20. The only thing that mattered was an 8-8 season with over 5 of our starters on O going down and D was about the same. So with that kind of finish with a 2 nd & 3 rd string lines playing and a QB that came in 1/3 of the way into the season and learned the playboook as fast as he did? Now look at our depth? True, olb’s got to come from somewhere but if there is anyone in a GM spot that can make this happen it’s RM!!!! I been a fan since 76′ and I can feel something special on the field finally!!! It smells like a Lombardi Trophy to me!!!!! Payton who? He will have some success because he’s Payton but he ain’t gonna have all the success, he’s gonna have to fall in 2nd to real success….. Just win Baby!!!

  21. People who hate my Pats are mostlv just flat out nasty, whereas the people who hate the raiders and the people who LOVE the raiders tend towards funny.

    Keep up the good work.

  22. gutierez sucks! He has no clue. Plamer is mobile enough for Knapps system. He doesnt have to be Vick to run the west coast. Besides, how did that work out for Mke? Palmer will be fine, he reads defenses just a s quick as brady. Its the decision making that will be a factor. Palmer needs to make better choices. Just because you have a strong arm like Palmer, which by the way evreyone doubeted, doesnt mean he cant develop his short game. Favre had a strong arm and he flourished in the WCO. Paul just talks out his butt.

  23. Also, our 2012 2nd round pick doesnt go to the Bengals. We traded for a player a couple years ago. I will look it up and get back to you.

my name says it all, and at least we all know the raiders will sell out their home game in San Diego. Also every game was a sell out last year in Oakland and there were no blackouts…pure idiot.
