Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew won’t be among the players participating when the team begins its voluntary offseason workouts today.

That’s the word from the Florida Times-Union, which reports that Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said he didn’t know of any players other than defensive tackle Terrance Knighton (who’s recovering from eye surgery) and kicker Josh Scobee (who’s the Jaguars’ franchise player and hasn’t signed his tender) who would miss the beginning of the workout program.

Not that I know of as of right now,” Mularkey said. “Again, this is a voluntary phase of our offseason and we’d like to have them all here, but we’ll find out when we get started in the morning.”

Jones-Drew is free to do whatever he wants, and he’s never been one to show up out of shape. Still, it’s a little surprising that the head coach wasn’t aware of the star player’s intentions. Mularkey is apparently finding out that Jones-Drew is choosing not to attend when he doesn’t attend this morning.
