Mayock calls Vontaze Burfict a “non-draftable kid”

Arizona State linebacker Vontaze Burfict began “draft season” rated as a first-round pick, at least according to January mock drafts from guys like ESPN’s Todd McShay. Three months later, there’s legitimate doubt about whether Burfict will be drafted at all.

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock doesn’t think there’s a whole lot left to talk about. He has Burfict rated as an undrafted free agent.

“I put his tape on with absolutely zero preconceived notions,” Mayock explained in a Thursday conference call with media. “I watched three tapes and really didn’t like him as a football player.

“I think he’s a non-draftable kid. For me, he’s a free agent.”

The common misconception with Burfict is that his problems occurred during the pre-draft process, when Burfict bombed at the Combine and again at his Pro Day. As Mayock has explained, however, Burfict’s fall occurred during games. He’s just not a good player.

  1. Vontaze Burfict sounds like some type of syndrome or a breathing technique for women in labor.

  2. Why are all these Mayock news bombs dropping all of the sudden?..oh wait..its probably because Florio is writing his next masterpiece about Payton filling in as the next coach at Arkansas..

  3. So what were they watching when they had him rated in the first round initially?

I cant wait for the draft to be over so we can stop hearing all theses so called “experts” talk out of their asses.

  4. From a prospective first round pick to undraftable in one season.
    A Lohan-like falloff.
    Cool name, though.

  5. “He’s just not a good player.”

This kid has Miami Dolphin written all over him.

  6. He’s a physical specimen. That’s all. He would be a guy I think Mike Singletary could mold into an All-Pro though. He needs guidance, and needs to rely on more then just his physical tools. You can see he plays the game with a ton of passion, reckless passion, but there is always a way to harness that and right the ship. I could see him landing in Minnesota, San Fran, or NY for the Giants, but thats about it. Maybe Baltimore, he seems like a Ray Lewis project too. He could be the epitomy of Low-Risk, High-Reward, and that reward could be a guy like Bill Romanowski. Sure, he was dirty and unlikeable, but he was a He** of a player and no body ever questioned his passion. I mean, I know there is more then Highlights to a guys resume, but you can’t tell me his aren’t some of the most unbelievable ever.

  7. Burfict is the one guy who kept Janoris Jenkins from being the biggest NFL draft loser.

  8. I am not sure I have ever seen a player’s draft stock fall so far, so quickly. Does anybody have anything good to say about him? If so, I have yet to hear or read it.

  9. there is no such thing as undraftable player talent wise he is a mid 2 early 3 he just isnt mature a team with a huge vet presence like the ravens for instance could spend a low risk pick on him and could pay dividends for them when ray ray retires

  10. I disagree. But I don’t have the tape that Mayock does. The kid is mean on the field, and he would fit perfectly with the Browns. With several picks in the 5th and 6th rounds, Id take a flyer on this kid.

  11. Vontaze quoted Don King when he said he does not need any affirmations or consternations, he only needs the purifications of his own materbations.

  12. I have been saying the same thing that mayocks been saying since February. When he was at ASU they had no choice to put him at MLB because hes ferociousness. They simply said “Taz just go out the a get the guy with the ball” but thats not gonna work in the NFL

Burfict will not be a good pro regardless of what team grabs him. theres no doubt that he is a ferocious tackler and a nasty player but the guy is going to be so lost when he is handed a full NFL playbook. Hes not the guy I would in the middle of my defense calling out check plays, knowing who he has to cover, reading offenses, ect.

The guy has so much football talent its off the charts but he has zero intangibles.

I doubt hes even heard of the word “audible”

  13. This kids needs an attitude adjustment. Don’t draft him, work him out as a FA and see where his mind is after the draft. Playing in the NFL is a privilege.

  14. If he was taken under a veteran LB core’s help on/off the field, the kid could be amazing in this league.

Unfortunately his biggest issues are inbetween the ears and he seems to have a lazy disorder. BUT he will be drafted, nobody goes from 1st round to undrafted for bombing two meaningless days of drills in spandex, being a bit of a headcase (which a disruption hybrid LB should be) and interviewing bad.

    Can he play? Yes.

Will he be inspired to work hard to get back into shape, study film in his free time and not be in the clubs?

    Hard to tell.

His combine and pro day numbers would say otherwise….Bills fans…

  16. All these Mayock stories are dropping because Mayock just did a marathon conference call on the draft, was like >90 minutes of him talking draft.

  17. Who is Mayock to judge him n all yall. at leastv played college football and consider to play in the nfl. N what r yall doing nothing hahahahahahahahaha E.A.G.L.E.S eagles

    Draft him fatass!.

  18. If he does in fact end up undrafted, Burfict would likely be best served in going to Baltimore.

The kid says he idolizes Ray Lewis, and there are several examples of players drafted in the mid-to-late rounds / not drafted at all that have gone on to have significant success (and big contracts elsewhere) playing next to Ray.

    Ed Hartwell 4th
    Adalius Thomas 6th
    Bart Scott undrafted

  19. He’s a physical specimen. That’s all. He would be a guy I think Mike Singletary could mold into an All-Pro though. He needs guidance, and needs to rely on more then just his physical tools.

And even then, would he listen? Doubtful…

“Geez, I hope his parents don’t read this.”

I’d +2 that if I could. Well played.

  21. I don’t understand how a player can go from a 1st-2nd round pick, to undraftable in just 8 weeks. What the heck are draftniks watching to rank him that high, compared to what scouts are seeing?

    Something doesn’t add up

  22. @chzsteak

Pretty sure he would be an upgrade over Casey Matthews. I think you signed the wrong Packer Philly fans. Nick Barnett would have made a world of difference on that team, but instead, ran back a pick 6 against your dream team to the delight of us…Bills fans… And I do say physical specimen based on his actual game footage. Your going to tell me something doesn’t click when that helmet goes on for this guy to have the anticipation to blow up the center and blow through the QB like it’s no body’s business? I have never seen a LB do that on a routine basis like he did.

  23. He’s a physical speciman

Really the slowest LB at the combine who can only bench 16 reps is a physical speciman?

Unfortunately his biggest issues are inbetween the ears and he seems to have a lazy disorder. Do you people not read the articles you post on? Or any article for that matter. He isn’t a good football player, period. He doesn’t understand the game of football, his instincts are terrible, he’s undisciplined and out of position 95% of the time. He’ll give you one big hit a game and everyone forgets the 69 other plays he was on the field for.

The only reason he was considered a 1st round prospect at the beginning of the year is because internet draft experts have no clue what their talking about. He was a highly recruited kid out of high school and has a great highlight reel. But being able to hit someone hard doesn’t mean you can play LB in the NFL

    Jevan Snead.

  25. I feel bad for Mayock when these dumb journalists ask such amateur questions!!!!

There’s too much credible crap on the Internet that makes Burflict not worthy of being talked about!!!!

  26. I saw Vontaze play several games in high school. I thought then he was going to be a college star and drafted in the first couple of rounds. He was all over the field at ASU but he did decline last season. It is amazing to see one player fall so hard before the draft.

  27. Mayocks codespeak to his former employers in Black and Gold : Draft this kid! He is special.

  28. a kid like this should not go undrafted, I’d bet half of the teams in the league have decided which low pick they would be willing to burn on the guy, as he’s exactly the type of high upside guy you take in a later round.

  29. I’m sure Mayock was right with “My hair hasn’t changed in 20 years” Kiper and “Suntan Man” McShay” three months ago too. As others have said, I seriously doubt he goes undrafted. If he’s still around in the 6th or 7th round, I wouldn’t be surprised to see my Ravens make a project out of him.

  30. Who is Mayock to judge him n all yall. at leastv played college football and consider to play in the nfl. N what r yall doing nothing hahahahahahahahaha E.A.G.L.E.S eagles

    Draft him fatass!

When people conjure up negative images of Eagles fan you are what pops into their mind. You sound even more ignorant than Burfict himself. Oh, and those red lines under your words aren’t for decoration FYI. Oh yeah, and if that didn’t get the point across I’ll go with something you might be able to understand. U DUM!

  31. Your not allowed to hit in the NFL anymore. This isnt the SEC, Goodell wants Deon Sanders ankle tacklers not violent hitters.

  32. If he goes undrafted, it may be such a wakeup call for Burfict that whatever team signs him could be getting a monster.

  33. That Todd McShay is a retard! How did he ever get a job making things up. The only ones you can trust to have any insight into the draft are Mayock and Charley Casserly.

Really?! Are you setting around watching a bunch of “tape” of all of the players? It cracks me up to see these types of comments. Like any of us have any ability to scout football players. Just because you played high school or college football doesn’t mean you have a clue when it comes to evaluating tallent.

  35. He will get drafted. A defensive coach like Rex Ryan would take a flyer on someone like him in the sixth or seventh round if he were to fall that far.

  36. He looked great as a freshman, but his play dropped off each year. If you like late hits, unsportman like penalties, and being in the wrong place at the wrong time, this is your guy.

  37. I wouldn’t touch this guy with a ten foot pole. He had been talked about being a fit for the Raiders, but Reggie Mac would never take him…I hope.

He is a head case and a penalty machine with no discipline (yeah, yeah…insert Raider joke here), so hopefully someone else will draft him or bring him in as an UDFA.

  38. To all of you people that believe EVERYTHING Mayock says, remember what he said last year…..Cam Newton is a project and it will take him 3-4 yrs. before he can run an nfl offense and he didn’t know if he had the work ethic!!!!! Even though all of his former coaches said otherwise. KEEP BELIEVING MAYOCK!

  39. Mayock also drooled when he saw JaMarcus Russell at the Combine in 2007. So much for that assessment… and quite a few more!

  40. Um bigdog….like I said, I don’t have the tape mayock does. All I have are you tube highlights. Dummy, read before u post.

  41. ASU alum and booster. Watched every game he ever played. Watched seven games live last season (Mizzou, USC, @Oregon, @UCLA, @Wazzu, Az, Cal). He sucks. I NEVER understood the hype on this kid. Never made plays. Here’s my analysis: Fat, slow, headcase that can’t tackle and has a bad attitude. Would like to see any of my rivals draft him.
