Martin Mayhew “hasn’t seen” Jahvid Best working out

Last week, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said that he was looking forward to running back Jahvid Best getting full medical clearance after the concussion that ended his 2011 season.

It sounds like Mayhew is still waiting. He wasn’t as forthcoming with the media about Best’s status as he was last week, which made it a bit unclear whether or not Best is able to go full speed yet. He’s been in Detroit for the team’s workouts, but Mayhew only passed along second-hand information about his status.

“I saw (Best) in the meeting room, but I haven’t seen him working out,” Mayhew said, via Anwar Richardson of “From what I understand, he’s been doing everything, as far as conditioning and working out with everybody.”

With no timetable for Best’s return and Mikel Leshoure coming back from an Achilles injury, there’s been a lot of speculation that the Lions will be looking to add a running back next week. Mayhew threw a bit of fuel on that fire in comments relayed by Tim Twentyman of the Lions website.

“I think it’s a critical position. I think careers are shorter, obviously, but I think it’s a really important position on your football team. We felt that way and we drafted that way in the past.”

And it sounds like they will be drafting that way again in the near future.

  1. I am really interested to see what the Lions are going to do in this draft given the uncertainty around Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure… You would almost think they are going to have use a pick to get a back … hopefully they have done their homework and can find one in the mid to late rounds. I’m thinking Mayhew is going to address the secondary and offensive line with his first 2 picks… there is still the possibility of signing a free agent back as insurance, but it doesn’t look like thats the way he wants to go … should be interesting Lions fans!

  2. I know how Best can feel better…Just ask one of his teammates to puff puff pass… it apears that Mayhew dosent care about it.

  3. Best should be paid his entire contract and banned from playing again. He better not sue for concussions down the line. This is his wake up call. A lifetime modest pension for players in his position is called for, with the lawsuits as they are. Any other worker in the US who gets hurt permanently at work gets SSDI. He should also, but letting him on the field again? The league is just asking for trouble in 20 years.

  4. We’ve still got the 2009 Div II MVP Joique Bell, Kevin Smith…..oh and that Megatron guy.

  5. I knew that this guy’s concussion problems in college ball would come back to haunt him. I hope that he does the right thing for his long-term health.

  6. Unfortunately, it appears Jahvid Best is probably done due to his cumulitive concussion problems. Wasn’t that the huge red flag on him coming out of college, before he got hurt last year?

  7. I really hope best can get over this concussion thing cause the guy is damn electric when hes got the more up the middle runs…pitch outs and screen passes i dunno maybe somthin like 5 to 7 touches a game?
