Robert Griffin III: “I’m not a selfish guy”

Robert Griffin III has heard about the unnamed scout quoted as saying he has “a little bit of a selfish streak,” and Griffin believes it’s just the kind of nonsense that comes out about every player before the draft.

“It’s just when the draft gets closer, everybody’s going to try and find something wrong with you to try and pull you down, so I’m not going to sit here and argue that, well that guy is dead wrong,” Griffin told Will Brinson of CBS Sports. “But I think the people that know me -- and even in the people in the media have seen -- know I’m not a selfish guy. You know you don’t have to fight your own battles -- let other people fight them for you. That’s about all I can say about that. I heard it, but it’s not something I’m going to address.”

Griffin, the quarterback who will become the future of the Redskins on Thursday night, seems to be savvy about the realities of being a star: It’s impossible to please everyone, and some people are going to try to pull him down.

And Griffin responds to that about as well as a star can. Last year Cam Newton chose not to engage with the silly criticisms about his character and his allegedly fake smile, and instead had Warren Moon speak on his behalf. Griffin wasted no time in dealing with his critics head-on.
