Larry Fitzgerald wants Michael Floyd in Arizona

Notre Dame’s Michael Floyd is all over the map in draft projections, with some people seeing him as the best receiver in the draft — better than Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon — and others having reservations. Count Cardinals receiver Larry Fitzgerald as one who thinks very highly of Floyd.

Peter King of SI.com talked to Fitzgerald over the weekend and reports that Fitzgerald badly wants the Cardinals to draft Floyd with the 13th overall pick.

Fitzgerald isn’t the type to complain about his teammates, but it’s obvious that every opposing defense makes stopping Fitzgerald the first, second and third priority in the game plan, and any receiver in that situation would like a receiver on the Cardinals who can take some of the coverage off him. So it’s no surprise that Fitzgerald would like to have Floyd, his fellow Minnesotan, as a teammate.

What we’ll have to wait until Thursday night to see is whether Floyd is still available at No. 13, and whether the people who make the decisions in Arizona have the same viewpoint on Floyd as Fitzgerald.

  1. Ummm… Isn’t Fitzgerald the one who makes the decisions in Arizona? That’s how it looks at least.

Obviously you didn’t get the memo that Fitzgerald IS the guy making the decisions in Arizona. See Kolb signing.

  3. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Fitzgerald is the most overrated player in the league. He’s had a few good years I know, but I can name at least 10 guys I’d rather have as my #1 receiver. If Floyd goes there, he will quickly overtake Fitzgerald as the #1 target. Careful what you wish for Larry!

  4. I completely agree with your conclusion that “we’ll have to wait until Thursday night to see is whether Floyd is still available at No. 13, and whether the people who make the decisions in Arizona have the same viewpoint on Floyd as Fitzgerald.”

  5. as a niners fan i just want to say…i hate when teams in our division gets game changing threats…i hope hes gone to by the 13th pick they would be a good combo…but they still have kolb and being from the east coast i seen him play for the eagles and i know last yr wasnt a fluke it wasnt because of the late start..so now that i think about it who cares if they get him

  6. @factoryofsadness

Nobody would know who the Cardinals were if it weren’t for Larry Fitzgerald! If he can still come down with stuff in triple coverage since Boldin left town, he’s still pretty damn good. I would absolutely love for you to try and catch half of the last 100 balls that Larry’s caught. If they get Floyd, that offense is going to explode with a Fitzgerald that sees a little more open space. And if they don’t leave Larry more open, Floyd’s gonna burn em. And for most overrated player in the league, take your pick from the Jets QBs.

  7. Cardinals will take a playmaker with the 13th pick. Either a WR or LB. Fitzgerald overrated? Not a chance.

  8. Unless they are allowed to use a football throwing machine under center, it won’t matter.

Didn’t Fitzgerald want Kevin Kolb in AZ, too?

    ———————————————————-

he did get a concussion and still ailing from it. it pretty easy to say he sucks but its obvious this is a serious problem.

  10. @factoryofsadness… Yes, 1400 yards receiving in constant double coverage with CFL-level QB talent is soooooo overrated.

  11. “He’s had a few good years I know, but I can name at least 10 guys I’d rather have as my #1 receiver. If Floyd goes there, he will quickly overtake Fitzgerald as the #1 target. Careful what you wish for Larry!”

    Stop playing Madden!

In real football, Fitz is def top 3.

  12. Larry Fitz has way too much say in what goes on with that team. I think they might be better off if he relinquished his job as recruiting coordinator and just shut up.

  13. Isn’t this the same guy that pleaded for them to sign kolb? You do not ever listen to players requests regarding personel decisions. That is what the gm is paid to do. Just catch the ball fitz

    NAME ‘EM. 10?

Go ahead and name 10 guys better than Fitzgerald. You are yet another dum-dum.

  15. As A Niner fan I would love to we GM Fitz take Floyd here. Yea keep ignoring the OL and let your QB eat the turf while you whine about your touches. Great idea!

  16. Fitzgerald is phenomenal. An absolute freak talent, tremendous competitor and consummate teammate. He’s everything you’d want from a football player.

But…the dude has a little too much pull on that team. Players play; GMs manage. No player should have significant input on personnel decisions. The guy’s that make personnel decisions (scouts, GMs, etc.) devote their entire year to evaluating players and weighing all the factors in potential acquisitions. Maybe Fitz stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I don’t think he’s an expert in personnel evaluation.

  17. As a Lions fan, I hope that there is a run for WRs in the top 22 picks. Last season, there was a run at the QB position and that pushed Nick Fairley to us (prior to his pot smoking).

I can see possibly 5 WRs all going in the first round this year.

Blackmon, Floyd, Wright, Hill, and Jeffery

  18. @factoryofsadness

Um, have you ever watched Fitz play? He’s a complete and dominant receiver. He might have the best hands in the league, he’s strong, and he has the ability to turn a 5-yard slant into a long touchdown. Most importantly, he’s a consummate professional and a team player. Ever seen him block for one of his teammates?

  19. Fitzgerald obviously doesn’t realize that notre dame players make lousy NFL players…the very few that even get drafted that is.

  20. Knowing the Cards, they’ll probably draft yet another running back, or maybe a punter if there’s one available. Heres to 40 more years of fail!

  21. Ok, you requested it..Here are 10 guys that I’d rather have than Fitzy boy:
    C. Johnson
    A. Johnson
    Welker
    White
    Jennings
    Nicks
    Wallace
    Steve Smith
    Julio Jones

Actually I would probably put Larry next…so I only got to 9..Anyway, my point is still the same…Overrated!

Don’t get me wrong..the guy is great..but people carry on like he’s the next Jerry Rice. It’s time people had a reality check.

  22. Well they paid Fitz all that money…might as well help him out and give him another WR that can take attention off of Fitz and actually make the opposing defense have to account for someone else.

  23. If opposing defenses continue to focus on Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd could have one of the great rookie deasons in NFL history. Ask Anquan Boldin. When there was a legitimate threat opposite Larry Fitzgerald, that receiver had an abundance of opportunities to make plays. Floyd has the skillset to take advantage of single coverage. If defenses choose to leave Fitzgerald in single coverage, we all know he is quite capable of seizing those chances.

  24. I don’t think it’s what Fitz wants anymore: I think it’s what Bill Bidwill wants. It looks like he has put an end to the experiement of letting sonny-boy Michael Bidwill control who the money is spent on. After the Edgerrin James, Derek Anderson, and now Kevin Kolb fiascos, Papa Bill has had enough. But, it could be that Fitz just happens to agree with what Bidwill, Sr. is thinking. But, then again, ol’ Bill also remembers the happy ending the Cards had with Anquan…

  25. Well, it’s better than having Kevin Kolb as your quarterback!!!!

While the Cardinals are at it they might as well take Stephen Hill too!!!

  26. Your ability to leave comments should be banned when you suggest Julio Jones is better than Larry Fitzgerald.

Really, you would probably put Larry next after Jones?? Ok.

  27. Factoryofsadness is on drugs. I still view Fitz as the best but Megatron is closing in real quick

  28. C. Johnson – Better than Fitz: Yes. Guy is not human.

    A. Johnson – I would say he is on par with Fitz.

Welker – No, he’s a slot receiver and a dang good one but not better than Fitz. PS ….. Having Brady as your QB helps ….. A LOT!!!!

White – Next tier below Fitz.

Jennings – Same as White … Having Rodgers as your QB helps ….. A LOT!!!!

    Nicks – Same as above.

Wallace – NO! Speed – yes. Everything else – no!!!

Steve Smith – You’re joking right? Where was Smith from 2009 – 2010?

Julio Jones – I’d say he could be as good as Fitz but let’s see him catch more than 60 passes and break 1,000 + yards first before we compare him to Fitz.

Fitz caught 80 passes and 1,400 yards from two not-so-great QB’s while being double teamed the moment he walks into the stadium.

Year before, Fitz caught 90 passes and 1,100 + yards from QB’s like Derek Anderson, Max Hall and John Skelton (who is the best of all three).

Thanks for giving me and the rest of the internet a great laugh for a Monday AM.

  29. Yep just leave good ol Levi in at LT. Floyd will really help when Kolb and Skelton are on their backs

  30. I feel bad for the guy. Not from a personal standpoint – he’s wealthy beyond all our dreams and presumably happy – but professionally, he deserves to be playing with a star-caliber QB and team. It’s never great to see a huge talent essentially stuck in a ditch on the side of the road.

  31. Fitz is one helluva receiver and if he wants another one in town give it to him. at this point who is the team spokesman for the Cards players, Warner is gone so that leaves Fitz, no one else is qualified except maybe Adrian Wilson.. Fitz is top 10 somewhere between the johnsons, he has no QB people and they are a running team, Where was welker before New Englands system, he couldnt play anywhere else so him Nicks, Wallace and jones need to come off that list. Good players but not great ones, not yet… I will throw in the young boy from Cincy.

  32. Well factoryofsadness, u get credit for at least trying to back up ur argument but there’s no way ANY nfl team would take anybody other than megatron over fitz. Half the guys u named are over the hill in wr terms and besides that, fitz can do what any of those others can do just as well if not better. There’s a reason guys flock to his offseason program, and most of the attendees are better off for it.
    Megatron is number one.
Fitz is number two, or maybe even 1b.
Give him a halfway decent qb and he may just overtake Calvin.

  33. With no real threat at tight end either, they need more weapons for Kolb. Getting Floyd in there will definitely give Kolb a better chance to be a better QB.

But the Cardinals O-line needs help too. It’s a tough call. And this is a deep wide receiver draft. I don’t think Larry is going to get his wish with Floyd. But in the second round, I think they’ll add the best wide receiver on the board.

  34. Dear Larry. You are a wide receiver – paid millions to catch passes and score touchdowns. That’s about it. Thanks for coming

  35. I knew Fitz would do this….he always does. The thing is though I feel like he only does this stuff to prevent the Niners or other teams in the NFC West from getting guys.
Pushing for Kolb, Manning now Floyd. I imagine a lot of his teammates could be getting sick of it, like, who will he throw under the bus next.
But please do draft Floyd Cardinals never mind someone solid for your o-line for years to come. It won’t matter because when Kolb gets benched for Skelton…Skelton will only try to throw jump balls to Fitz (see 49ers GM on MNF) Funny thing is they won somehow.

  36. Thanks for the laugh @factoryofsadness.

I assume you also think Ray Rice, Jimmy Graham, and Aaron Rodgers are all so-so players?

I’ll tell you what, if you have 8 more guys who agree with your list, I’d like to invite the 9 of you to join my fantasy league next year.

  37. No one is saying Fitz has had any say on any of the signings. In fact, he has expresses several times that he is just an employee of the team.

He is however, entitled to his opinion. Whether the team listens to that or not, is completely up to management.

  38. Ton of respect for Fitzgerald, but whats up with all the “I want Kolb/Floyd/ on my team”?
Let the FO do its job (never mind, its Arizona – carry on Larry)

  39. Dude gets doubled teamed every play and still puts up pro bowl numbers.

When you also consider he has a clown for a QB it’s even more impressive.

    Do your thang Fitz!

  40. No disrespect to Fitz, but he need to shut the f up and let the GM do his job. “i want kolb, i want Manning, I want floyd” if the Cards keep trying to please him without doing their homework first and doing whats best for the team not best for him, he is going to run the franchise to the ground.. AZ needs OL period!

At 28, Fitz is already almost halfway to Jerry Rice’s numbers (and yes, Rice is the greatest). Fitz still hasn’t hit his prime yet and will be in the Top 10 in yardage in the next three years.

Only morons such as yourself would ever call Fitz “overrated”. Congratulations, moron supreme.

  42. Unless you want to see Kolb/Shelton/Plan C at QB get slaughtered again, the ONLY pick for Cards is DeCastro…memo to Fitzgerald: you’re not the one getting lit up on every other pass play because the O line is a joke….take DeCastro, no brainer…and yes, Shut Up Fitz

  43. Floyd is more like Larry Fitzgerald.

Mentally strong, great blockers, jump ball experts and can break double teams, work over the middle and in seems and red zone beasts.

Blackmon is more like Dez Bryant.

Not head-strong, pure atheletes size/speed combination and will make the highlight reels but lack the dirty work of blocking and reading coverages.

Dear thereisfootballwestofjersey. You are an anonymous poster – paid nothing to flap your gums here on PFT. That’s about it. Thanks for coming. Now STHU. Fitz laughs at your dumb arse.

  45. First off all of you saying Larry has too much pull on the team has lost just about all of your marbles. I would say 95 percent of you making that post is not even a Cardinals fan and probably only know what NFLN tells you about the team. Which is not much, they get no coverage. Fitz makes one comment about a QB and all of a sudden he has too much pull. Best athletic teams listen to leadership on the team from time to time. Plus at that point it was sign Kolb or risk losing Fitz…No brainer. The clown who said Fitz is overrated has no say in any football conversation. Fitz is the coldest reciever in the league hands down. No one faces more double teams than Fitz and no one has better hands the Fitz. The man who breaks all of Jerry Ric’s post season records in one Playoffs can say what ever he wants. Signing Kolb didn’t put AZ in dire straits. I promise you after this year Calvin Johnson will be asking for some help too.

  46. @factoryofsadness you sir are completely dillusional Larry Fitzgerald is hands down the best WR in the entire NFL. You couldn’t think of 1 better let alone 10. Overrated? Wow you obviously no nothing about football you are a complete moron…….. Unbelievable
