Shawne Merriman has played just five games since the Bills claimed him off waivers during the 2010 season. But Merriman says he has a big future ahead of him in Buffalo.

Merriman told BuffaloBills.com that the Achilles problems that have bothered him for three years should be solved now because he finally had surgery, and that he believes that surgery is going to have him looking like the Merriman of old.

“The Achilles is such a unique injury,” Merriman said. “It’s not one of those things where you look at it and say, ‘Let’s go fix it right now.’ But we reached a point where it was time to get it done. I was very pleased as far as how things went with the surgery. I feel great now. Obviously I’m still in a bit of rehab process with slight limitations. For the most part though, I feel great.”

Merriman started his career on a tear, with 39.5 sacks in 42 games in his first three seasons. In the last four seasons, however, he has played in just 23 games and recorded just five sacks. It’s been so long since Merriman played well that it’s easy to forget he’s only 27 years old, but Merriman says he’s finally back.

“Absolutely,” he said, “I’m going to be 100 percent.”
