Earlier this week, Gene Frenette of the Florida Times-Union reported that, barring something unforeseen, quarterback Mark Brunell will retire after 19 NFL seasons.

Something unforeseen has happened. Brunell says he’s not retiring.

After mentioning on his Twitter page that he will not be calling it quits, Brunell told Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News that the former Packers, Jaguars, Redskins, Saints, and Jets quarterback isn’t ready to call it quits.

“If an opportunity came along, I would certainly consider it,” Brunell said. “I definitely would like to [play] another season. No plans to retire yet.”

Brunell may have to wait until the inevitable injury bug strikes. Or perhaps a team hoping to find an quarterback in the draft won’t get the guy they want, and will bring in Brunell to fill out the depth chart.

With another 320 offseason jobs now available, Brunell’s phone could be ringing. And the person calling could be someone other than Dan Marino trying to get Brunell to sign up a little early for AARP.
