Fans at the NFL draft boo Roger Goodell

AP

The 26 players attending tonight’s NFL draft were brought on stage at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday evening and were mostly cheered by the fans in attendance. Some scattered boos for Andrew Luck could be heard, but generally the fans are excited to be there and ready to cheer.

But when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was introduced as he took the stage to join them, he was loudly booed.

At last year’s draft fans loudly booed Goodell, but that was explained away as simply a reaction to the lockout: Fans changed “We want football” and clearly had a specific reason to be unhappy with the man who represents the owners who decided to shut the league down.

The fact that fans got their football and are still booing Goodell suggests that there’s animosity toward Goodell that labor peace can’t cure. Some fans think Goodell has been heavy-handed in his approach to everything from rules changes to fines for on-field infractions to suspensions for off-field violations. Those fans don’t get a lot of opportunities to voice their displeasure to Goodell, but they got one opportunity on Thursday night. And they took it.

  1. Not surprising…look at the punks they let in the place. No class at all.

  2. Some fans think Goodell has been heavy-handed in his approach to everything from rules changes to fines for on-field infractions to suspensions for off-field violations.

And then there are those that think he’s a glory hog, inconsistent with his decisions, power hungry, and an overall jerk.

  3. They boo because they think he is ‘pussifying’ the game, when in fact he is trying to save the game from being sued into extinction. I am sorry “true” NFL fans, your going to have to deal with the game not being as intense or vicious as it currently is, and god forbid if that means players will have to learn to tackle instead of relying on the blow up hit.

  4. People in New York just boo everybody. They boo Tebow, they boo Goodell … they’d boo Mother Teresa if they had the chance. If they want to see somebody who really DESERVES to be booed, they ought to look in the mirror.

  5. And then there are those that dislike him for lying to the fans and the media, making up rules as he goes along, suspending players for no good reason, and being an overall jerk.

  6. He does rule with an iron fist, but he deserves credit for being equally harsh to both players and owners/front offices/coaching staffs.

I like him; he’s taking out the trash – not a glamorous job but it has to be done and he does it well. Sorry that some teams have truckloads of it…

  7. Getting booed by the Radio City Music Hall crowd is one of the better compliments a person could ever receive.
I’m through explaining why the commish is saving the same game you think he’s ruining.

  8. Not just Saints fan wiseguy…Football fans. This man is like tits on a tricycle. He has no business being put in charge of the greatest sport in the world. None.

  9. Gotta say not a fan of pussifying the nfl….. As a player u know how violent the game is u except it u play it thats why u make millions…. Hockey players dont bit*h and sue. A carpenter at the end of his carrer doesnt sue his employer after he retires. Use some common sense and if u cant take the heat get outta the kitchen ( thats why they sell insurance)

  10. Football has been a certain way for awhile now and became popular bc of it. Now certain people want to act all high and mighty about being concerned for player safety as if it isn’t blatantly obvious that hits to the head can’t be good long term. If you don’t like vicious football why did you start watching football in the first place ? Go watch soccer

  11. Czar Goodell is a tyrant. Tries to tell they fans what we want, regardless of what we say…18 game season anyone?

  12. Boo him why? Because he punishes poeple who screw up and is trying to extend the life of the players by limiting concussions. Keep up the good work Goodell. Run that tight ship!

  13. and he should be booed everywhere he goes. Fans of the NFL that we have loved for decades see it being watered down to a two-hand touch football league. Anybody that thinks this heavy handed communistic type treatment of the Saints is to save the integrity of the league is highly mistaken.

  14. When goodell continually tries to spin things as what the fans want when obviously the fans don’t want this he’s going to be disliked.

    example…
    1. Fans want more games, therefore we’ll create an 18 game schedule
    2. fans want more offense, therefore i’ll make every rule change to favor the offense.
    3. I’m so smart i’ll create a bigger fan basae and start having games in Europe..wtf

the guys comes across as arrogant and oblivious to what actual fans want.

So you must have been one of the few fans who enjoyed the pro bowl–all offense, no defense–exactly what the NFL will become under Goodell’s watch.

Instead of being the commissioner who made the game of football safer, he’s going to be known as the lawsuit commissioner–something he brought upon himself.

  16. I would boo him too if I was there. He is legislating everything out of football except the passing game. It is pretty much basketball on grass, or areana league ball at this point. He is legislating out the running game, defense, kickoff returns, the only people on the team that matter anymore are the QB, WR, pass catching TE, and the pass rushers. I don’t even know why teams field linebackers anymore, they just get wrecked by all the pass catchers.

  17. Bring back Tagliabue!!!! This guy wants to be the face of the NFL. Let’s not change football. Make the guys sign a waiver. You want to play football? You want to make money? Then sign this. With this signature you will not be able to sue us after u are out of football. The NFL is so popular that even a douche like this guy can’t completely kill it but sure will try.

Also you are the Commisioner of the NFL why are you slapping hands and havings special hand shakes with players? Be a g damn professional and shake a hand like a man.

This is the same guy that won’t think twice about suspending you when you do something wrong.

  18. You know, one cheap late hit on Brees, Eli, Peyton, Brady, Smith and Green Bay”s QB and where’s your football season? Take out half a dozen WR or Te”s and where’s your season? There’s a way to play this game without crippling a guy. There’s no need for it. Those targeted players are our stars. All of them. Nearly irreplaceable. Be fair. Be honest. Be real. Concussions are real, cheap shots are real injuries are real and they should be and be minimized. For the GOOD of the game. For the good of the players. Short and long term. I wouldn’t want Goodells job. If the fans could look through fair, business, colored glasses rather than emotional “my team” emotions they could see it too. Is fair so much to ask in today’s world? People hate so easily, just driving home from work, who is your Neighbor 4 doors down? How many have you had over for dinner or helped when you knew they were desperate? Yet we eat Goodells butt for trying to protect out beloved stars.

I’ve seen it go from 9 games a season to 16 every year more and more injuries. Yet we want more but owners don’t want to increase line-ups. Don’t want to offer long term assured contract payments or latter year retirement medical benefits. But by God we want 18 games, and we love those DYNAMIC hits even if it costs us a flag. What’s a knee worth? I’ll tell you – $70,000 hospital, 35,000 Doctors and another 10k in miscellaneous for bi-lateral knee replacement. Plu, END OF CAREER for a good acl. Destruction. Anyway, PLAY BALL

  19. Well he is the guy consistently pissing on the game’s history and everything about it the fans love and turning the game quickly into a total passing league which players will soon be wearing velcro flags on their waists and even kickoffs are eliminated. Geez, why would people dislike him?

    Must be Saints fans.

Giants, Jets and Eagles fans are the most heavily in attendance at he draft due to the location. Hardly many Saints fans, their boos would not have been heard over applause.

  21. The Texas should trade their second round pick and another in 2015 to get another first round pick and get a qb.
