When the Rams selected kicker Greg Zuerlein in the sixth round, it signaled that Josh Brown’s job might not be secure for much longer.

Brown’s security lasted less time than it took you to read that sentence. The Rams announced Saturday night that Brown has been sent packing.

“He’s already been informed of that,” coach Jeff Fisher said, via Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Josh was a great kicker, and was tremendous here in the community. He’s got deep roots here. I spoke with him immediately after the pick and he understands.”

Cutting Brown saves the Rams $2.7 million in cap space this season. Brown made 21-of-28 field goals last season, his lowest percentage in four years with St. Louis, and he made just 8-of-14 kicks from 40 yards or more.

Zuerlein hit nine field goals from 50 or more yards at Missouri Western State University in 2011 as part of a streak of 21 consecutive made field goals. He also had 30 touchbacks from the 30-yard-line, five yards further back than where he’ll kick off in the NFL.
