Report: Bills will give Vince Young a tryout

Quarterback Vince Young still views himself as a starting quarterback.  But that won’t keep him from trying out to be a backup.

Mark Gaughan of the Buffalo News reports that the Bills will give Young, the third pick in the 2006 draft, a workout on Wednesday.

Young would presumably compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.  Currently, Tyler Thigpen is the only veteran understudy on the roster.  The Bills recently added former USC quarterback Aaron Corp, who was not drafted.

Young played for the Eagles in 2011.  Team president Joe Banner told PFT Live last year that the Eagles wanted Young to sign a two-year deal, but that Young wanted to commit only for one season, so that he could try to get a starting job in 2012.

  1. HECK YES.

    the bills need a jolt,

and who cares what has happened to VY,

he can get that rose bowl magic back with the bills,

they both got nothin to lose and everything to gain if it works out.

  2. Eh the Bills could do worse. At least they know what theyre getting. Totally unrelated but am I the only one who wants a better commenting system? Something where you can see all your old comments and who responded to them? Reply buttons aren’t exactly new technology. The current system doesn’t lend itself to debate at all. Maybe they won’t do a profile thing because they know that if I find out where that dbag Steelers fan lives who constantly comments something along the lines of “Six rings. Six.” regardless of what the article is about, I’m going to climb in his window and poop in his hamper.

  3. I wonder (if Young signs of course) if Buffalo’s gonna be the next dream team.

As an Eagles fan, thank god.

  5. A Vince Young-led Eagles did beat the Super Bowl champs last year. Not a bad backup to have at all.

He’s no Tim Tebow of course.

Sorry, that title will forever belong to hte Eagles

  7. Seattle took a lot of heat for signing Tavaris Jackson last offseason. I always thought it could have been worse: They could have gone after Matt Leinart or Vince Young.

  8. I would’ve liked to have seen the Browns sign him to push McCoy. Hell, he’s even 5 months younger than Weeden.

    Perfect fit in Buffalo. Useless.

Its too bad we don’t play ya’ll in the regular season this year, because while we’re cruising through the playoffs your team will be sitting at home.

  10. If he will just keep his mouth shut he’ll be a good back up on a perennial losing franchise for a few years.

  11. OK, I see a lot of people giving a “thumbs down” to my Tavaris Jackson comment.

Did any of you actually see the game between Philly and Seattle last year? One QB played within the system, took few chances, and went 13/16 with a TD, and won. The other tried to force numerous passes, showed zero ability to read a defense, threw four picks, and lost.

  12. Why not give VY a chance, right? Certainly a better option than Tyler Thigpen. Tell him to keep his mouth shut, and the Bills will do fine with Vince.

  13. im willing to bet that the Bills will have the largest wonderlic spread between qbs on the same roster

  14. @laeaglefan

Trent Edwards knows how to shut up. Regardless of skill he’s already way better than VY bc of discretion.

(Laeaglefan will probably not see this thanks to the archaic comment system. Florio probably does his taxes with an abacus)

  15. Vince won the OROTY Award, and was a Pro Bowl alternate selection, exactly five years before Cam Newton acheived those honors. Coincidence, eh?

  16. @mjbulls45: I guess signing Mario Williams, Mark Anderson, and their latest draft class wasn’t enough of a jolt for one off season.

Sure bring him in as a backup. He’s an improvement over Thigpen but anyone who thinks he is going to come in and beat out Fitzpatrick is delusional.

  17. i think VY would be a great pick-up. fitz is always going to be a qb where opposing defences understand his limits. third and long you stick VY in the game and you have to wonder if the balls going deep or he will take off and run. hey, i am just trying to put the best spin on this possible signing folks!

  18. If u want to know wht happened to VY… Just go to the rashan salaam story on pft.

  19. mmm… don’t know what to think about this one. He’s got some tools, but does he has the drive to become more than a what he is today?

I believe Chan can squeeze some juice out of him but if Young doesn’t want to be pushed hard I don’t think this will work.

  20. Interesting that he will end up on the same team as Mario Williams, the player the Texans took instead of him in the draft (much to all the UT fans’ dismay).

  21. Right division wrong team. He’s better than all the quarterbacks on the Jets.

  22. I kinda saw this coming. I can’t think of any other teams that would be interested in Vince Young.

Well maybe, but just maybe, Tampa.

Otherwise, he and McNabb should look into the Canadian league.

  23. I think it’s safe to call him a bust.

He called the wrong plays and even called plays that didn’t exist. And he’s no leader…but he does divide the locker room.

  24. “Trent Edwards knows how to shut up. Regardless of skill he’s already way better than VY bc of discretion”

Maybe Trent Edwards knows how to shut up, but discretion, in and of itself, does not win many football games. Don’t get me wrong….I’m no fan of Vince Young and I’m very happy that the Eagles dumped him. But they still haven’t improved the backup QB position. Besides Edwards, they’ve got a career clipboard holder with a noodle for an arm (Kafka) and a raw, untested rookie. We can only pray that Michael Vick stays in one piece so none of them have to even get on the field.

  25. I wonder if he’ll get mad and throw his shoulder pads into the stands again ??

  26. What ya’ll don’t understand is that guys like VY and Ricky Williams and Colt McCoy are gods in Austin, TX. VY has the hottest restaurant in town right now. Whether they ever play another down of football or not, Vince, Colt and Rickey are probably set for life.

  27. Didn’t a few years ago this punk was talking smack about Donovan McNabb getting a job or something now he’s struggling to get a try out he arrogant bastard couldn’t buy a clue. At least McNabb will be in the HoF discussion Vince will be in Arena or Canada in due time. He’s a JERK who should watch what he says before he’s a sure lock in his position Jackass

Just worry about beating the Ravens in 2012! 🙂
