Bucs announce signing of paralyzed former Rutgers player Eric LeGrand

Getty Images

A statement released by the Buccaneers on Wednesday about the signing of an undrafted rookie began the same way most of them do.

There were stats and notes about the young man’s playing career, but Eric LeGrand isn’t your usual undrafted free agent so things took a different turn at the end of the first paragraph. While playing for Rutgers in 2010, the defensive tackle suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a game against Army and was paralyzed as a result.

LeGrand’s story is well known and he has made stunning progress since his injury. He began breathing on his own faster than expected, he’s been able to stand with assistance and he led the Scarlet Knights onto the field for a game last season. He’ll never play a down for the Buccaneers, of course, but Greg Schiano, who coached LeGrand at Rutgers, explained the reason for the move.

“Leading up to the draft, I couldn’t help but think that this should’ve been Eric’s draft class,” said Schiano in the statement from the team. “This small gesture is the least we could do to recognize his character, spirit, and perseverance. The way Eric lives his life epitomizes what we are looking for in Buccaneer Men.”

It might be a small gesture, but sometimes those are the ones that wind up meaning the most.

  1. Very cool. I’ve met Eric at Rutgers and Jets games before and he is quite the inspiration. Well done Schiano!!!

  2. Greg Schiano is an honorable man and the NFL and fans will learn that quickly.

Wonderful gesture to Eric who gave everything to RU football.

You will always have a home in NJ Greg.

  3. That is how you start your tenure in the NFL! Thank you Coach Schiano.

We need to hear these stories. As football fans and internet blog readers we’ve become too jaded. 🙂

  4. I’m a Phins fan, but I’ve gotta say so far this Schiano guy seems like an old school man’s man. Moves like this really tug at the heartstrings. I wish Greg Schiano big success in the NFL. Guys with his character deserve to win.

  5. Great job Shiano, now let him lead the Bucs out of the tunnel and be a honarary captian at the home opener, would be a great sight!!!

  6. Thumbs up to the Bucs for this one. This will get national attention as an inspirational feel good story and is great for PR by the way. GO BUCS

  7. Not a Bucs fan, but I am now… actually made me a little choked up. Total class

  8. Great to hear.

They had LeGrand in the telecast booth during the WVU/Rutgers game last season (which is something, IIRC, he wants to do for a living).

He was outstanding in that role (authentic and useful insights about what was likely going through a player’s or coach’s mind when X happened; great personality; etc.). I look forward to hearing him call games in the future.

  9. Living in the North Jersey area where Rutgers is myself, I can tell you that Eric LeGrand is a great kid- a fighter who has accepted the challenge put in front of him with grace and class.

One of the first things Schiano said when he took the Tampa job was that LeGrand was coming with him in some capacity.

Eric did some radio work on Rutgers games and was very good. Maybe he can intern with the team in that area.

I certainly wish him the best in whatever direction he takes.

realnflmaster, you must be a realknucklehead. It has nothing to do with his ability or the pay check he collects.
It’s all about a coach who chose to do the right thing.

  11. Well played. That poor kid is truly special. He is always smiling and positive which is remarkable considering his condition.
    Godspeed Eric LeGrand.

  12. I’ve gone through what Eric has gone through, and we are at about the same recovery level. I can’t believe some of the classless losers that post crap like “walk this way.” You should be shot!

  13. This could be the most heart warming move I’ve ever heard of in sports.

Imagine for a moment if they decided to use their 7th round pick on him though! Odds are the guy they took would have been available as a UFA anyway.

What a move Tampa. Good for you!

  14. No one will ever have to tell Eric LeGrand or Greg Schiano to “man-up.” What a great story.

Now, the punks who gave the positive comments a “thumbs down,” or blathered on about their own short-comings, aren’t worthy of being called “men.”

  15. Wonder if this means the Bucs will pick up the tab on his medical bills now? That would be cool of them…

Two of the most classless comments ever on PFT. You should both be ashamed, but people like you generally have no shame.

Kudos to the Bucs for doing this. Classy move. At least LeGrand will still be able to be involved in the sport he loved.

    Buccaneer Men?

How ’bout “Buccaneer Men in Tights”?

  20. I would be much more impressed if an organization without connections to Rutgers and Legrand did this. But with Schiano being the coach now, I almost expect this from them. It’s not nearly the random act of kindness that it would have been otherwise.

  21. Very classy move by Schiano !

Does anyone know who recommended Greg Schiano to the Glazer family & Mark Dominik ?

  25. That’s an awesome move. I tip my cap to the Bucs organization for such a classy gesture for the young man and his family.

  26. Wow, what an impressive gesture and a real tribute to a kid with life and spirit. An inspiration not only to Bucs players and fans, but to us all. Congrats, Bucs, on a great pick up.

Now you can go ahead and say “Wouldn’t expect anything less from a Giants fan”

    See how that works?

  29. Thanks Coach Schiano and thanks Bucs for one of the most inspiring gestures of of all NFL time and especially Bucs time! Go Eric!

  30. What’s the big deal? Assuming that they cut him before the season and didn’t give him a signing bonus, it costs them nothing.

In the NBA, where late round drafts are basically meaningless, teams used to occasionally use draft picks to make political statements. At least they were giving up something.

    No, it’s not.

When Schiano was at Rutgers, he made a promise to LeGrand that he would never abandon him. When he took the job in Tampa, he was asked about that and promised that he would take LeGrand with him if he wanted.

It’s a man making good on a promise.

Next time, if you don’t know the whole story, try Google.

  39. Anyone that posts stupid remarks about this story needs to have their heart examined. Football is a game we all love. But the fact can’t be ignored that it is a violent contest where players are put in harms way. Eric’s life was changed forever by chance but he has chaned other lives by choice . May God bless him and the Bucs for this gesture.

That MIGHT be true if he didnt have a real and genuine connection to the kid from Rutgers.

The point of it is how LeGrand felt, not about what you or anyone else feels about it. And if you hvaent ever had to deal or watch someone deal with major trauma, or paralysis, things like this, sure do help them along the way to recorvery.

  47. For the first time ever, a reason to root for the Bucs! Very classy move on their part, and best of luck for a full recovery for Mr. LeGrand.

  56. As a Cowboys fan, I wish my GM was this classy.
    Seriously, awesome move.

To realnflmaster and bathroombenlovemachine, your comments are disgusting. I hope that neither of you experience that kind of trauma in your personal or family lives. But if you do, I hope that you find more compassion shown to you than you displayed here.

There is such a thing as trying to be funny, and there’s the equivalent of throwing a puppy into a burning building for laughs. I think it’s pretty clear what side of the line you two are on.

  57. I am trying to think of a way to adequately describes that gap between the character of a man like Eric LeGrand and boys like bathroombenlovemachine and realnflmaster. Words like enormous, gigantic, and humongous seem inadequate. Analogies like “as wide as the Grand Canyon” or “as deep as the deepest ocean” just don’t seem to do it justice. I guess I’ll have to keep thinking.

  58. Not only is this a great for Eric, this is the type of move that helps foster a solid locker room and that’s important. I wasn’t sure about the Schiano hire for Tampa, but I can be certain that he is a class act. If he can get those guys believing in each other and playing together, Tampa will be turning heads next season.

Best pick of the draft…and they say the NFL lacks class! Unfortunately, it seems some of you lack serious class and compassion. I can only wish you the very worst that life offers until you are humbled and respectful.

    ENOUGH ALREADY.

Yeah, there are bad fans, but there is bad karma blowback. When you wish it on someone , it comes back to you two-fold.

Hoping Eagles win a Super Bowl with Michael Vick as the MVP dropping records just to shut these haters up.

So some body makes a dumb comment, and thats condemning the entire fan base.

Whatever. And the Fightin Phils have a World Series Championship this decade already, so they arent losers – a couple of people made a thoughtless comment, and people pile on.

  70. Very cool. It would have been nice if the NFL granted Tampa Bay one additional “compensatory” pick as a noble gesture so that he could have actually been drafted and had his name announced. Can’t imagine any team would have had a problem with that.

Now, hopefully LaGarrette Blount won’t punch him in the face…..

  71. Way to go, coach. A beautiful move. A career-ending injury like paralyzation is catestrophic, but it is great that his former coach showed him this respect being that it would have been the year that he came out.

    Great move.

  72. Maybe this is nothing more than a feelgood PR story….but the fact is, it brought LeGrand’s name back to the forefront for the time being, and could potentially open some doors that otherwise might not have been available to him.

For example, he’s expressed an interest in broadcasting….something that not many people knew. But now that this information has gotten out there, there’s an good chance that someone in the broadcasting industry will reach out to him, which could springboard him into a dream career than he otherwise would have had no shot at.

Of course he’ll never suit up for the Bucs…but that’s not what this is about. This is about a coach using his own good fortune and position to provide an opportunity for a kid who apparently very much deserves it, and who otherwise might not have gotten one.

Very classy and selfless move by Schiano. And if this gets Eric a foot in the door to a new career, then it’s all worthwhile.

again you are proving my point. unless andy breid is your dad, my insult to him is funny and not insulting. i don’t like reis. so what. You are not a member of the eagle’s you just think you are. go do something that gets you out of this fantasy world that makes you the member of your favorite philly sports team. pathetic.

His theme song should be “Walk This Way”

Eagles = Next Super Bowl Champion

Hope you find out personally what a Curp Stomp feels like, real soon…..a-hole.

  88. LOVE IT! Classy move Schiano! But at some point I assume they will have to cut him, roster slots are at a premium. Maybe some type of coaching or front office position in his future. I hope so.

Big Ben is upset he wasn’t signed by the Steelers. Big Ben wan’t to to give him a sponge bath after each practice.

Anyone who could think this way must make his family SO, SO proud….

Do you not understand that even making this comment makes you so much worse than anyone you are trying to embarrass?

And you have to live with yourself.

There are many other better UDFA linemen on the market. This move is a head scratcher.

Typical Tampa. Great kid, but guess he came cheap.

I hope you both realize you’re simply morons and don’t somehow think there is any humor in what you wrote.

Wonder if this means the Bucs will pick up the tab on his medical bills now? That would be cool of them…

Im pretty sure his medical bills are paid for buy Rutgers or some kind of college insurance fund since he was hurt onthe field.

  92. I did not take the time to read all of the 100+ comments (sorry). Congratulations to the owners for seeing the mistake they made a couple years ago, and making the change with their HC. I am sure every move GS makes is a rewarding, breath of fresh air compared to the last couple years. It looks like class and hard work will define your organization now….

Wow…I guess that was really voicing your opinion huh? Stay classy though…people like you are the ones that should burn in hell for saying things like that. You make me embarrassed for my son right now cause he’s an Eagles fan. UGH!!!!

Hell is fictional. But thanks for playing.

    _ _ _ _ _ _

Thanks a lot for perpetuating the belief that atheists are bad people. As an atheist myself, I’d just like to point out that I, and most other atheists find this type of behavior disgusting.

    ==================================

Thank you for saying that. Although I’m a Christian, I believe in free moral agency and don’t tell others how to live. But I resent having my beliefs ridiculed by smarmy jerks like realnflmaster who equate rudeness with intellectualism. I appreciate hearing from an atheist who also tries to be respectful of differing views.

  94. Dear Philly Fans,

The Buc’s fans thank you for our fond memories of Ronde Barber running to the end zone with the game ending touchdown interception to close out your old stadium in the NFC Championship Game in 2002 as they went on their way to become Super Bowl Champions. Scoreboard.

  95. This is such an admirable, classy move. The NFL truly needs more stories like this. I wish Eric the best as he continues to recover and inspire others.

I’ll be rooting for the Bucs to do well this year.

  96. I don’t want to come off as a p#s$y or anything like that, but watching that coach dedicate their bowl win to him this year while they were receiving their trophy actually brought a tear to my eye. Just to see his smile and the happiness he had for his team was an inspirational moment for me (just like many others I’m sure) . This article did the.same thing for me. I have to say, I have become a big fan of this coach and now, I always will be. Win or lose this coach has my respect for life. Not even a bucs fan, but as long as he’s there I’ll root for them (unless they play the Packers).

  97. Also, who gives thumbs down to positive comments on a story like this? I don’t care if he played for my most hated team. This kind of thing doesn’t even compare to the greatest rivalries. Were not talking about teams anymore, were talking about a real person who lost something most of us take for granted every day. Shame on any of you who would rather see somebody suffer. Just remember, these kinds of things could affect you or a loved one. I’ll bet you wouldn’t be laughing then.
