Three teams giving up on him in two years isn’t enough to convince Donovan McNabb that his NFL career is over.

McNabb said on ESPN 1000 in Chicago today that he has been working out, getting into better shape and focusing on his fundamentals as a passer, and he’s ready just as soon as some team wants to pick up the phone and call.

“I’ve been training hard and preparing myself out in San Diego working with George Whitfield, the obviously well-known quarterback guru, supposedly, for over the past month,” McNabb said. “Just kind of refining the skills, working on the mechanics and getting back to a high level, an elite level. I’m just waiting for the opportunity to display that.”

The question is whether he’ll ever get that opportunity. From the perspective of an NFL front office, it would be easy to say that McNabb already had the opportunity to display what he could do, and the three teams that got an up-close look at his abilities -- the Eagles, Redskins and Vikings -- all decided they were better off without him.

McNabb, however, said he firmly believes there’s a place for him in the NFL.

“I sort of have some unfinished business,” McNabb said. “I love the game, I have a passion for the game, and I look forward to continuing that on. . . . I will be playing somewhere. This is the first time I’m actually going through free agency and I’m excited about it because I get the choice, to pick and choose of the teams that are interested.”

That assumes that there are teams interested. So far, no such teams have been identified.
