Vince Young’s arrival in Buffalo is welcome news to starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who says Young will provide competition in training camp -- but not for Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that the benefit of having Young in the mix is to have a good competition for the backup spot, but that everyone has been clear that Fitzpatrick is the starter.

“Buddy Nix has been a guy that has been very fair to all his players, he’s been a guy who’s been trying to create a competitive atmosphere,” Fitzpatrick said, via BuffaloBills.com. “Buddy caught me in the hallway one day and said, ‘Look, we’re looking to create some competition for that number two spot at quarterback, we are bringing in Vince Young. We made him an offer. We’ll see if he comes. But just to let you know, obviously, you are our guy and we are just trying to get better at every position.’”

Fitzpatrick said he appreciates being told exactly what Young’s role is, and that he looks forward to working with Young.

“When people are upfront and honest with you and telling you what is going on, then it makes everything go much smoother,” Fitzpatrick said. “And for me, I’m a guy that’s got to go out there and perform, and I know that, just like every quarterback in the league knows that. I met Vince the other day and he seems like a really good guy.”
