Jets sign Yeremiah Bell to one-year, $1.4 million deal

Yeremiah Bell has found his new NFL home.

A league source tells PFT’s Mike Florio that Bell has signed with the Jets on a one-year, $1.4 million contract. The deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus, a $1.1 million fully guaranteed base salary and a $100,000 workout bonus.

Bell was expected to sign today after making visits to the Eagles, Jets, Chiefs and Titans since being released by the Dolphins, and now the deal with the Jets is done.

For the Jets, who went into the offseason with bolstering the safety position as one of their top priorities, have now added two in free agency, Bell and LaRon Landry. They also spent a sixth-round draft pick on safety Josh Bush and a seventh-round draft pick on safety Antonio Allen.

The 34-year-old Bell has played his entire eight-year career with the Dolphins. He started all 16 games last year.

  1. I wanted him to sign in philly , but now that he hasn’t , this guy sucks . Good depth signing and shame on me for trusting in Florio

  2. Good move. The depth chart at safety needed anything it could get. That it’s a skilled veteran with long-term experience in the division doesn’t hurt either.

  3. Let me ask you this, NYJ fan. Do you notice the lack of outrage/fear from Dolphins fans in these comments?

One more question. Over the past 8 seasons, you’ve played the Dolphins 16 times. Have you ever, even once, been worried about Yeremiah Bell as the Dolphins’ Safety? Ever? Once? Did you even notice he played?

My guess is no. Y Bell seems like a great guy. Gave me a nod at a gas station once. That’s always cool when that happens.

But if Y Bell is playing a big role for you next year, you’re not good.

  4. Eagles fan 290 if he had signed with the eagles you would be saying “good value deal”. Not everyone wants to play in Philly

  5. That sound you just heard is not Rex Ryan’s stomach deflating… it is the sound of slow safeties getting blown by folks like Lloyd and Johnson.

And the slowest safety tandem in the league goes to …….”

    – As a redskins fan, I honestly don’t feel any need to defend LaRon Landry but you do realize he ran a 4.35 40 at the combine right? You are uninformed sir.

  7. 1.7 mil all in for a 34 yr old Safety ?

My guess is the Gloria Estefan, J Lo, Fergie, Williams Sisters, etc. ownership block thinks this is a good move.

    Way to go fish.

  8. @liljere24 : “Not everyone wants to play in Philly ”

Im pretty sure the Eagles didn’t really want him cause Roseman said that Philly wouldn’t bring in any veteran
safety , at least not until after training camp . But you are correct T.O wanted no part of the Eagles in 2005

Actually, they’re just glad you’re not their accountant…since the contract is for $1.4m.

Solid signing. Nothing to print shirts for or make guarantees ov…dammit…Rex just went on the air and guaranteed a Super Bowl again, didn’t he?

  10. And Phins fan who asked NYJ fans about the lack of outrage? You guys spent all that when you blew up about him getting cut with the initial Jets rumors. You’re just all getting old and that refractory period is getting longer, so you couldn’t blow your outrage nut again at this time.

  11. Its a great signing. When Landry’s ankles and knees turn into dust before everyones eyes at OTA’s you will be happy he is there.

  12. Damn, I know it’s a business decision but I absolutely HATE when an ex Fin signs with the jets or pats. It’s like an ex gf dating your buddy from when you were younger, nooo bueno.

As a fan of common sense, I don’t feel any need to expect you to use it, but you do realize that the combine was 5 years ago and he’s gotten significantly larger and had several injuries since since then, right?

  14. it’s only because it’s the jets that everyone thinks it’s a bad move. it was a good move, good role player and he knows the division. what’s negative about that?

  15. Solid signing….Jets needed S depth after how bad they played last season and this provides just that with Landry / Allen / Bush and Smith. If they can stay healthy, this can be one of the best overall secondary in the NFL.

To the fans that bash EVERY move the Jets make – you are funny! This guy signs anywhere else and that team gets credit LOL…..

  16. If they had this room under the cap and no other place they were likely to spend it (coaches seem to think they don’t need any OL additions), why not commit $1.4m for one year? They didn’t get talked into signing a two or three year deal that might sting them at all in the future.

  18. The funny part is that the Jet haters make it sound like Bell was signed to start. He is a SS and so is the actual starter Laundry. It also give the Jets the flexability to cut Smith and save his 2+ mil cap hit. If the Jets cut Smith and he is replaced by Bell the Jets save over 600K.

    – I do not think common sense would lead you to the conclusion that he is one of the slowest safeties in the league.

(Assuming he is healthy, otherwise this is all irrelevant because he won’t be playing)

  20. Funny signing for the Jets when you consider:

The phins cut him because, like the Jets, they SPECIFICALLY need safeties who can cover TE’s.

The phins realized he was slowing down & has been unable to cover a TE his whole career & moved on.

Seems like the Phins FINALLY understand what their needs are. Sadly, the same can’t be said for the Jets.

    _____________
I never said he was. My point is that you’re ripping a guy’s opinion based on “facts” that are outdated for a variety of different factors by more than 5 years. Common sense would lead you to argue based on something more credible then “but look how fast he was 5 years ago in shorts!”

  22. .

There’s a shortage of good safeties in the NFL. Even if you you have a quality tandem, it’s doubtful you would have adequate backup.

    .

  23. Not a Jets fan, but I attribute the lack of outrage/fear from Dolphins fans to a dismal fan base, not because the lone Dolphin fan in the country is happy to see him go…
    ———————————————————

Not happy to see him go. Indifferent.

  24. The people criticizing this move obviously didn’t watch enough Eric Smith. There is no one slower than Smith in this league. I’m pretty sure Bryant McKinnie was faster than Eric Smith at his peak obesity.

And the dude who said guys like Johnson and Lloyd will be blowing by Bell/Landry, have you just decided to completely disregard the fact Darelle Revis still plays for this team? Lloyd and Stevie Johnson won’t be worrying about which safety they have to blow by-there’s a certain number 24 they have to get by first.

  25. excellent pick up by GM Mike tanenbaum the jets defense is looking a lot faster then last year’s defense. with all the moves tannenbaum this offseason I see the jets win total +3 or 4. this year. 11 to 12 wins AFC EAST DIVISION CHAMPIONS.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. @hermanbates
Worry about 24?? Stevie Johnson vs. Jets in 2011.. 8 catches 159 1 td.. Which Revis got smoked on. So the fans like the Jets coach blather on while they live in a dream world. Bell is slow but a smart veteran player, so he may actually help.
But I still think the Jets are gonna suck

  27. Bette than what we had last year. Also a leader with a great football name. I would have bet Eagles would have loved him. Sorry, he wanted to play for a team that has a chance to make noise in the playoffs.

    Great move Jets.

  28. @kgun80

The kid has himself 1 decent game against Revis and now I’m supposed to believe he can do it consistently? Dude couldn’t even catch the most important ball thrown at him that day. That was the only TD 24 gave up all year, and the Jets intentionally let them get the underneath throws that day.

Look, I appreciate that Buffalo finally has a chance to be competitive again, they were sad for a long time and I actually felt bad for Buffalo fans because they deserved better, but lets face reality: Buffalo has won 1 game against Rex and it’s because Sanchez threw 5 interceptions and even still they needed a FG in OT to win it, that D-Line hasn’t played a single down yet, and their best receiver has put up 2 TDs in as many years on the Jets catching passes thrown from a QB that hasn’t proven himself in a big moment even once while Braylon Edwards put up 3 TD’s in 2 years, catching passes from Sanchez and he wasn’t even our #1 WR.

JT’s year was beating the Colts and Pats and losing in the afc championship. Is that your point??? Or were you out trolling someone elses message board back then?

  31. YB is a great locker room presence and a good guy.

Jet fans will root for him as he chases the guy with the ball in vain because he’s too slow now to play a solid safety.

But a GREAT locker room presence.

The phins cut him because they saved almost 8 million dollars, not just solely because he couldn’t cover TE. Also with all the great moves made this offseason by your GM shows me they ABSOLUTELY understand what their needs are. Trading away your best receiver was a huge need.

That was in two games, not one. No one smokes a healthy Revis. Even if they did have one good game, Revis still dominated the other 15.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This is pretty funny. The guy averaged four catches and 79 yards a game, and the talk is that Revis “got smoked.”

    Haha.

What this is really about is Revis becoming a victim of his own greatness. It’s reached a point at which a pedestrian game (4 catches, 80 yards) is something to talk about.

  37. “JT’s year was beating the Colts and Pats and losing in the afc championship. Is that your point???”

Well, continue to cling to that one small moment in the past…. that’s all ya got.
Playoff games lost are still losses.

  38. THE BEST non-signing of the Philadelphia Eagles so far this year!! So glad we didn’t sign him. We have two young guys (Nate Allen and Jaiquawn Jarrett) ready and waiting. Nate came on Strong at the end last year after recovering from a season ending injury the year prior. He’ll be good to go Come Cleveland!
