Robert Meachem: For Chargers, winning the Super Bowl starts now

AP

Robert Meachem has only been in San Diego for a couple months, but he already has very big ideas about what the Chargers can do.

Meachem told the North County Times that with the work he’s been doing over the last two months, he’s building the kind of rapport with quarterback Philip Rivers that wins Super Bowls.

We want to win it all, and winning a Super Bowl starts now,” Meachem said. “You have to build that strong relationship with your quarterback. You have to know what he sees and how that relates to what you see. The transition has been smooth, and that’s what you expect with two veteran guys trying to do everything right and get on the same page. We know it’s a process that takes time, and we’re working through it.”

Meachem said he’s developing not just an on-field relationship with Rivers but a personal relationship.

“The better you know each other in the locker room and joking around outside of practice really helps,” Meachem said. The more you talk, the more familiar you get. It’s not just about running routes or studying film. It’s about holding a conversation and understanding an individual personality. When he jokes about something, you have to figure out why he thinks that’s funny.”

Now that Meachem knows what Rivers finds funny, maybe he can tell the rest of us what leads Rivers to make this face.

  1. Sorry, it’s not gonna happen this year. Depending on who you ask, they’re either the 3rd or 4th best team in that division. Also, Rivers can’t hold onto a snap with the game on the line.

  2. Meachem knows what it takes because he sat back and watched Brees have that same chemistry with Colston, Moore and Jimmy Graham.

  3. The Chargers will never win the SB. Choke artists. Remember how loaded those teams were a few years ago when LaDanian was in his prime, Merriman was juicing, and Turner was the backup? You know, when they went 14-2 and then promptly fired their coach just to hire Freddy Kruger?

  4. Nothing like replacing your number 1 receiver with a bunch of no 3/4 guys…but at least they’ve still got their aging broken down TE.
The dolts are finally ready to resume their rightful position at the bottom of the division, you bucked the trend for awhile (and have nothing to show for it!) but now you’re going back where you belong.

  5. With Norv in charge? Just one word:

    Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!

  6. The Chargers’ offense is going to be unstoppable, with Gates healthy, Ryan Mathews entering his third season, the addition of Meachem and Royal, and the development of Vincent Brown.

The defense is going to be much improved with upgrades at coordinator, linebacker, interior DL and safety.

I believe the Chargers are the best team in the league going into 2012. I hope the pundits continue to expect little from the Bolts, so this team can fly under the radar. I am confident the Chargers will dominate the Raiders in Oakland on opening weekend.

LOL you can’t be serious can you? Ummm can you? O_o

  8. @jason49er, break out WR? He went from Drew Brees to rivers. He’s gonna be your average wide out, not gonna have a break out year unless he breaks a leg

  9. The chargers have the talent but don’t have the right coach to steer them in the right direction. They were more closer with Marty than turner and had they not fire him, they’d probably have a ring by not. Don’t look for the chargers to go to the SB anytime soon with Norv at the helm, and when they do decide to can him, players would be past their primes and the chargers will be in rebuilding mode

  10. The door has officially slammed shut!

Going from VJ to Meachem is like going from champagne to Milwalkees Best.

Mathews looks more and more like a bust, and Gates is practically done.

Unloading Sproles amd Turner was the end of this team.

Somewhere Marty is laughing out loud.

  11. @jeziyo247 Meachem went from an offense where there was so much ridiculous talent he was only getting 65 targets a season. He’s a 6’2 guy with 4.39 speed who was catching 2/3 of his targets, if he gets thrown to 50 more times to match VJax’s total (and a contract worth $26M leads me to believe he will) just imagine the numbers he puts up. 60+ catches for 1000+ yards and a good number of TDs is absolutely achievable. Norv Turner has been going gaga over him all spring and there aren’t many offensive minds in the game I trust more than Norv, his track record speaks for itself.

Is that the same Marty Schottenheimer who kept Tim Dwight on the roster and let Wes Welker go?

Is that the Same Marty Schottenheimer who played Brees in a meaningless end of season game which resulted in an injury that nearly ended Brees’ career?

[sarcasm] Yeah, Marty has plenty to laugh about. [/sarcasm]

  13. The Chargers are going to be real good this year. And yeah, they lost VJ, but they have added a lot of much needed depth at the wide receiver position.

Their offensive line steadily improved towards the end of last season.

They also have a brand new defensive coordinator who I expect to be very aggressive with his play calling.

The Chargers have also signed at least twenty free agents. Add that to their great draft and other UDFA’s that they have brought in, and I think they are going to surprise a lot of people this season.

  14. yeah didn’t winning the super bowl start like 5 years ago too for the chargers? hhhmmmm

  15. Meach is a good receiver with speed however there was a reason he was the third or forth receiver in the game. I love Meach and wish him all the success in the world but the above picture tells alot about him. that is his catching motion… notice not with his hands. maybe that was it.

  16. “He went from Drew Brees to rivers.”

    Uh, what’s your point?

I’ve seen both play, in person, many times,
and if you think Rivers is lesser because he isn’t a fantasy icon, you’re mistaken.

    Numbers:
Career Passer Rating – Brees 94, Rivers 95.5
Career Yards per Attempt – Brees 7.4, Rivers 8.0

Rivers has been the more productive,
per snap, of the two…despite throwing longer,
    higher risk passes.

  17. @humbolt: You are delusional!! “I hope the pundits keep doubting the chargers….” You mean, as opposed to the pundits picking the chargers to win it all every year for the past seven.

Even with the RAIDERS at their worst for the past 10 seasons, they STILL managed more playoff wins then the annual preseason favorites, your bolts.

You are my favorite charger fan, keep up the good effort.

  18. What is really amazing is this post has been up for over 3 hours and not a single Joetrollonto sighting. Kind of like when San Diego destroyed Oaklands playoff shot last year and he went into hiding.

  19. What a joke…. a seriously demented joke. Maybe if the experts don’t pick the Chargers coming out of the AFC this year, they might actually do it, but I doubt it. Back into the basement Charger fans.

  20. On the field the Chargers have a pretty decent looking team, and with a couple of breaks could be better than what most unqualified armchair quarterbacks give them. The problem with the Chargers is not so much Norv Turner (although, somewhat) it is AJ Smith and Dean Spanos. Spanos is NOT committed to making the Chargers a Superbowl team, just one that gets cash-spending suckers, erh-h ‘fans’ into the stadium seats. I feel for Rivers. He is a better QB than most in the league. Better than the others of that draft class (Ben and Eli) but will never be in a Superbowl.

  21. “Spanos is NOT committed to making the Chargers a Superbowl team, just one that gets cash-spending suckers, erh-h ‘fans’ into the stadium seats. ”

Do you have any idea how hard it is to win a SB? I mean, Jerry Jones might be a jerk but he is committed to his team 110% and still he hasn’t won the big one since the ’95 season. It took the Rooneys 15 years since Cowher took over to win the SB. The Pats hasn’t won since the ’04 season with Brady and Bellichick at the helm. You have to have luck on your side to win the SB. All life is a game of luck (luck: preparation meets opportunity).
This is not baseball where the Padres will never win the WS with poor owners and a $45M payroll. The Spanos have spent almost every cent permitted under the cap. In regards to Norv, he is in my opinion a genius of football. He took the team into the AFC Championship in his first season and lost the game late in the 4th quarter with ruptured ACL Rivers with LT and Gates injured on the bench. Regarding his past jobs, he had a mediocre at best Redskins team and inherited a dysfunctional Raiders team. Just ask yourself this question…..What has the Skins and Raiders done since Turner’s departure?…….. exactly!

  22. Robert Meachem is a decent 2 or 3 receiver at best. He’s also scared to take a hit. Brees made him look much better than he actually is. Norv Turner thinks he got a great #1 receiver and he’s wrong.

  23. Philip Rivers is a great QB, & I would take him over Drew Brees or Eli Manning every single day of the week. But they are all great QB’s, & Robert Meachem will be an important part of another dynamic offense under Norv Turner:)

  24. Well, they were the favorites at the beginning of last year… and that didn’t turn out well. Maybe if they are predicted to finish 2nd or 3rd in the division then this will be the year they get to the big game. As delpiero1980 points out, there is a lot of luck involved, and it’s not like Spanos and AJ are not trying. Take it from a Pats fan who bet big on us beating the Giants this year… you don’t win ’em all!

Either way, this season should be dedicated to #55, in San Diego. I hope they wear a patch and they play with heart out of the gate. It’s time for these Chargers to get over the hump.

  25. Chargers have a decent team but will be in tough to win the division. The biggest difference between last year’s team and better teams in years past was the defense. The D will have regain their form if they want a chance at the post season….and even if they get there, Norv Turner is their coach which spells an early exit…..no team will ever win the big one with him as a head coach, sorry Meachem.

  26. To everyone bashing the Chargers, you must understand that every year there are a couple of sleeper teams that surprise everyone.

Unfortunately for the Chargers, they’ll be 5-11.

That right there is what is so wrong with Charger fans. They celebrate a regular season win as though there was some type of trophy attached to it.

  28. @raiderapologist…….not celebrating anything. Merely a statement of fact. Joe trolls all over Charger posts. As much trash as he talks….it was humorous to see him disappear. Defend him if you want….but he’s a loser.

  29. Raiderapologist is spot on. All charger fan (this means you humbolt) has to celebrate is regular wins. Knocking the RAIDERS out of the playoffs last season IS their Super Bowl. It’s all charger fans has, let them rejoice. Maybe Spanos can spring for a banner to start celebrating these “achievements”.

  30. LOL @ raider fans…..yet you fools never hesitate to jump on Charger posts. Mullman is the perfect example. Trolls trolling. Get a life loser.

That is FUNNY mullman. Raiders are 3-14 vs. the Chargers in the last 17 meetings. All the Raiders had to do was win ONE game and they won the division and were back in the playoffs for the first time in what…8-9 years?

I still remember watching the raider unfaithful streaming out of the stadium during that game.

As I said in my post before it was taken down, fellow Charger fans: EMBRACE THE HATE. We’ll be the ones smiling next season.

The Raiders? They’ll still be wondering WTF happened to their first & second round draft picks while watching GlassFadden sits on the sidelines with a stubbed toe. But hey! They still Lechler.

    ====================================

Saints fan here and I agree. I appreciate what Meach brought to the table. He can be a very good #2 Wr if he’s willing to put in the work.

I also have to say if you had offered us Vincent Jackson straight up for Meach,Saints fans would have taken that offer without a second thought.

    Simply put, Jackson > Meachem.

  33. I think the quest started in the 60’s, but dont give up Charger fans maybe someday you might actually get to play in the big game again and then actually show up for it. You have gotten worse every year with Norv and that’s what everyone expected to happen.

Raiders Super Bowl Rings – 3
Chargers Super Bowl Rings – 0

    Shush !

  34. The Bolts will have the deepest WR corps in the League with Meachem, Malcom Floyd, Vincent Brown and Eddie Royal. But none of them will be a No. 1. Anybody who says that Norv Turner is looking at Meachem to be a No. 1 receiver doesn’t know the San Diego Chargers.

Antonio Gates will lead the Chargers in receptions and Ryan Mathews will get his share of targets from Phil Rivers too. With Meachem and Floyd on the outside, Gatesy, his foot issues behind him, will have a monster year.

Some Bolts fans believe Vincent Brown will emerge as SD’s best WR this year. Last season he was a rookie during the lockout and an abbreviated training camp. This season he is participating in all the OTA’s and minicamps and will have a full training camp.

It’s going to be a great season, Chargers fans. Anybody who follows the team closely knows how much better this team has become with free agency and the draft. Melvin Ingram is going to join Jarret Johnson, Shaun Phillips, Antwan Barnes and a finally health Larry English in the rotation at OLB. The addition of Reyes to Cam Thomas, Cory Liuget and Vaughn Martin is going to create a dynamic corps of young DL up front. Donald Butler is going into his third season at ILB and don’t give up on Jonas Mouton. I think you are going to see the young defensive talent AJ has drafted the last three seasons start to mesh into a top three defense.

The Super Bowl Express starts in San Diego the day training camp opens.

  35. rundmc20,
You do realize that the last time the Raiders won the super bowl was 28 years ago? How did that last superbowl appearance work out for them?
What is it they have they done since Reagan was in the white house again.
As of today, every team is undefeated and playing to get in the superbowl. Not one team is playing to have a losing season. At least the media is not picking the Chargers to go to the bowl so maybe they do have a shot.

  36. @humb0lt

I am confident the Chargers will dominate the Raiders in Oakland on opening weekend.

    ———————————————————

You’re a clown. For all the talk about football being a passing game now, victories are still achieved in the trenches. The teams that are strong along the offensive and defensive lines are the ones, more often then not, that end up winning.

The Chargers have done NOTHING to upgrade either of their lines. The offensive line is a complete mess. Dielman is gone. McNeil is gone. Please don’t tell me Gaither is the answer either. There’s a reason two teams have let him go and nobody else wanted him. Mario Henderson? Please. You have to be joking right? If he isn’t cut by the end of training camp, then you’re really in trouble to be counting on him. As a Raider fan, I can say with certainty that Henderson flat out sucks. The defensive line is the same cast of characters you’ve had for the last few years. Bottom line is there’s nobody there that really is all that good.

The Raiders are simply physically superior to the Chargers along both lines. I expect Oakland to use the same formula that’s been successful in the last few years, and that’s to just physically whip the Chargers on both sides of the ball. Remember Curry knocking McNeil into the next phase of his life last year on Thursday night? You’ve got more of that coming on opening night.

  37. That picture of Rivers was taken after asking him his thoughts about the overconfidence of Chargers fans on this post. At least he’s living in the real world. 🙂

  38. @carlsbadboltfan: Thank you for proving my point. Your whole tirade was based on a REGULAR SEASON win. When the chargers went 14-3 against the RAIDERS, how many playoff games did the chargers win? How many championships?

Keep relishing those regular season wins vs the RAIDERS bolt fans. I think you need to go on another 5 year sweep to even up the series.

The chargers have been the RAIDERS biatch for the better part of 50 years- shake yourself.

chargers, falcons, panthers, seahawks = 0-1 in games that really matter…

Keep the dream alive charger fan.

  39. @pdxbolt: I only check the AFC West. I’ve seen you on plenty of RAIDERS posts- here is a napkin, you have hypocrisy on your face.

The only reason I post on charger news in because you (charger fan) are the most delusional fanbase in the division, possibly in the whole NFL.

Don’t let the frustration of the spanos/smith/turner fiasco make you lash out in personal attacks, you babbling buffoon.

  40. @ lonzila

Do you realize the last time the Chargers won a Super Bowl was…..ummmmm okay not a good example. Do you realize the Raiders were in a Super Bowl in 2002 and the last time the Chargers were in one was mid 90’s. And we still didn’t lose as bad as the Chargers. This is a topic Charger fans are going to lose everytime. The Jets haven’t won a Super Bowl In forty years and they still have more to brag about than Charger Fans. Win something then you can open your mouth.

  41. Last season, my neighbors cheered all night long when their Raiders beat my Chargers early-on in the season.

You can’t even imagine how many hilarious expletives I tossed their way when we knocked them out of the playoffs on the last game of the season.

I’m pretty sure they all committed suicide.

    Karma!

  42. Villa, you’re the clown here. The ONLY shot your pathetic franchise has is IF McGlassFadden can stay healthy for all 16 games. Michael Bush ain’t there to sweep up the glass.

Gaither handled your D the last game of the season rather well. You remember that game, don’t you? The game where your team stepped on their genitals and had your front runner fans streaming for the exits before the game ended.

  43. @ brassknuckles and jameslongstaffe, you must be delusional to think that rivers is better than brees, ben and eli. The guy lead the league in INTs two straight years , even breaking his own record. Drew, ben and eli has five superbowl rings combined, rivers, none and wont even get close. He doesn’t deliver in crunch time like the other guys, let’s not forget you can’t receive to ball with close hands. He couldn’t even beat tebow, unless he resurrect, they chargers are gonna have some real problems. Oh and let’s not forget they the chargers had the easiest schedule in the west the past few years

  44. pdxbolt:

Here I am, loser. In your head where I’ll always be.

    The Chargers, LMFAO!

  45. @rundmc20,
Being you are into ancient history and all, you do know the Chargers won the AFL championship game in 1963 before there was a superbowl. So going by Raider Logic, the Chargers held the championship first. Also, losing a superbowl by one point or forty still means you came in second place out of two, or in Raider land, first loser.
And yes, I know, the Chargers have done nothing lately either. But hey, for both of us, there is always the payout of drafting well. how did that work you for you guys?

  46. jameslongstaffe says:May 19, 2012 7:22 PM

Philip Rivers is a great QB, & I would take him over Drew Brees or Eli Manning every single day of the week. But they are all great QB’s, & Robert Meachem will be an important part of another dynamic offense under Norv Turner

    ____________________________

Guess you do not have a choice as you cut one of them and the other told you he would never play for you.

How has that been working out for you
Eli has won 2 and Drew has won 1

Rivers has not even gotten to sniff the trophy

  47. @Jojotoronto…

Glad to see you made it Jojo…..I was getting worried about ya. You’re normally the first troll to post….it wasn’t the same without you!

  48. @ lonzila.

Our drafts have been pretty good lately except for the worst pick ever Jamarcus and idiot McClain. But other than that pretty good.

McFadden, Jacoby Ford, Denarious Moore, Nnamdi, DHB, Michael Bush, Michael Huff, Tyvon Branch, Zach Miller, Stefan Wiznewski, Matt Shaunaussey Shane Lechler, Janakowski, Jason Veldheer, I’m pretty happy with the raiders draft picks recently. The drafts could be better could be worse. All these guys are starters and pretty productive so make sure you research them before you say something stupid. Oh and this years draft has some pretty promising picks look up what they are saying about the new WR Criner out of Arizona. ( I know it’s early on him but looks promising) how did that Eli Manning draft pick work ? I know you will say Rivers is better but he isn’t so don’t even try.

  49. I would still take Philip Rivers over Eli Manning or Brees:) All it takes is to reach the top once before everything becomes worth it… I love history, & the Chargers were a dynasty in the AFL so most of the arguments trashing the Chargers history don’t bother me lol. History also points out that Rivers had a tough start last year but finished strong, & that his career passer rating is higher than Brees & Eli, or any other Manning for that matter.

  50. To all of you saying “Do you know who the coach is” and “He’s at best a #2 or #4 wideout” I say put down the beer and stop playing Madden in yo mama’s basement. Meachem, unlike most of us, has been given a shot to take over a #1 role. He knows who he replaced and what the expectation is.

And he thinks he can hit it. He’s been asked to man up and he’s going to shock some people.

So him coming in with some swagger, ready to make it happen is a good thing. Let’s fast forward to August and get this season started!

  51. @natelan69: Classy post, you donkey. After one of the most legendary chargers ever tragically takes his own life, you put up that garbage? A suicide reference? What a fool. At least you enjoyed that final REGULAR SEASON win, I know how much it means to lowly charger fan, it’s all you have.

@lobzila: Obviously you haven’t been paying attention. Al drafted WELL the past few years, check the roster and start paying attention.
My favorite RAIDER is Jared Veldheer, LT. The kid is a monster and will be anchoring the left side for years to come. Little Wiz at center will be solid as well. Moore, Ford, Reece, McFadden, Branch…. You get the idea. Just keep savoring those REGULAR SEASON wins and the one AFL Championship in ’63. Not quite a SB, but it will do for charger fan.
    Carry on powder blue fans…

Joe can defend himself, in his particular way. There are plenty of Charger trolls on Raiders posts, and some, like humb0lt, are so biased they deserved to get blasted. Every team in the AFC West sucked last year. There is no shame in owning it, and no logical reason to proclaim that one team is going to be that much better than another. Debate is cool, but propaganda gets old. Even this early in the year.
