Chiefs move McCluster back to wide receiver

Dexter McCluster Pic

Dexter McCluster has fallen well short of expectations inherent for a former 36th overall draft pick, and he appears to be undergoing another position change entering his third NFL season.

Per Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star, McCluster worked “exclusively” at wide receiver during Monday’s OTA practice. The Chiefs tried McCluster at slot receiver in Charlie Weis’ offense two years ago, and it didn’t work. Moved back to tailback in 2011, McCluster got playing time only because injuries forced him to.

He has not earned a steady role in Kansas City’s offense.

According to Teicher, McCluster was first in line on punt returns at Tuesday’s workout. Special teams may be the only avenue left for McCluster to maintain a spot on Kansas City’s regular season roster.

He’s buried on the skill-position depth charts.
