Packers sign Phillip Merling

The Packers made some roster moves on Wednesday and came away with a former second-round pick.

They announced that defensive end Phillip Merling has signed a contract with the team. Merling was the 32nd pick of the 2008 Draft and a fairly large disappointment for the Dolphins. He played 47 games for the Dolphins over four years, starting five times, but never established himself as a solution at the end of the defensive line. He was released by Miami in April, shortly after signing his restricted free agent tender.

Green Bay should offer Merling as good a shot as any place to revive his career. There’s going to be a lot of competition for playing time on the defensive line after the defense underwhelmed last season so Merling will have a chance to get back on the field.

The Packers also released tight end Cameron Ford and quarterback Nick Hill. Hill, an Arena League standout, was thought to be a contender for the third quarterback job but it seems the Packers will go with rookie B.J. Coleman for the time being.
