Patriots sign Bo Scaife

Already deep at tight end, the Patriots have signed another one: Bo Scaife, a free agent who spent all of last season on injured reserve with the Bengals.

The Patriots announced today that they have signed Scaife, wo played from 2005 to 2010 with the Titans before signing with the Bengals -- but never playing for them -- last year. In Scaife’s best season, 2008, he caught 58 passes for 561 yards in Tennessee. But his numbers declined for two straight seasons after that.

New England has also confirmed that it released defensive lineman Markell Carter, tight end Nick Melillo and offensive lineman Jon Opperud.

The Patriots are currently below the 90-man roster limit, and one potential move to keep an eye on is the re-signing of free agent defensive end Andre Carter, who played in New England last year. Carter is one of the top free agents available, and multiple reporters spotted him at the Patriots’ facilities this week. With the Patriots last year Carter had 10 sacks in 14 game before being lost for the final two games of the season and all of the postseason with a torn quadriceps tendon.
