Darrelle Revis: Sit down with Jets has to happen “sooner or later”

If Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis does decide to hold out on the Jets this year, it will come at training camp.

Revis took part in the first practice of Jets minicamp on Tuesday, erasing any concern that he would start his push for a new contract on the day that mandatory workouts got underway. Before minicamp, Revis had not ruled out anything for training camp at this point, but he also hadn’t said he will definitely be there in late July.

Revis didn’t change that tune at all on Tuesday, but did say that he felt like he needs to have a meeting with owner Woody Johnson, General Manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Rex Ryan. None is scheduled at present, but it does seem like one will be necessary if Revis is going to see his way clear to retiring as a Jet.

“Sooner or later it has to, I got two more years left so we’ll see and we’ll go from there,” Revis said, via the Newark Star-Ledger. “Whatever is best for me and the organization we’ll get through it.”

Revis’ ace-in-the-hole in any negotiation with the Jets is the fact that they are barred from using the franchise tag on him after the 2013 season. While they can extend his contract three years at $3 million if Revis holds out this summer, the lack of a tag looms in the background as a major leverage shifter when this year is over. That could lead to movement on a new deal now so the possibility of losing Revis never enters the picture for the Jets.
