The Jaguars expect to start free agent signing Laurent Robinson at one wide receiver position this season and first-round draft pick Justin Blackmon at the other. And Robinson has taken it upon himself to provide a little veteran leadership to Blackmon.

Robinson told Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union that he pulled Blackmon aside and delivered a message after Blackmon’s drunk driving arrest.

Just tell him you gotta grow up,” Robinson said. “You know, NFL players are targets, you gotta stay low key, low profile and you know just, everybody makes mistakes and you know he’s gotta learn from it and just keep doing better.”

Robinson’s advice is wise, although everyone -- not just an NFL player -- is a target when he drives around with a blood alcohol level of three times the legal limit. But the good news is that Robinson says he has seen indications that Blackmon is motivated to show that his drunk driving arrest isn’t going to define his rookie year.

“Playing with a little chip on his shoulder,” Robinson said. “Little mad about the whole situation. He’s going to be a pro. We’re going to help him out along the way and he’ll be fine.”

The Jaguars can only hope Robinson is right about that.
