The Chiefs were a last place team that fired their coach last season, but they kept their franchise quarterback. And that quarterback says this is no rebuilding team.

Matt Cassel said the Chiefs are a team that expects big things this year.

“With every season, there’s a lot of changes,” Cassel told the Springfield News-Leader. “But I feel like as long as we go out there and execute and play good football my expectations are very high for this team.”

Cassel missed the last seven weeks of the season with a hand injury, and the Chiefs were also missing some of their best players, including running back Jamaal Charles, safety Eric Berry and tight end Tony Moeaki, for most of the season. But Cassel says a healthy Chiefs team will be a better Chiefs team.

“I feel great, I’m ready to roll,” Cassel said. “I feel like our team will come out stronger. We suffered through a lot of injuries last year to some key people but they should be coming back stronger and the coaches are very optimistic.”

If Cassel’s performance doesn’t justify that optimism, this is likely his final season as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.
