Dolphins talking to league office about a logo change

In 1997, one of Florida’s NFL teams made a dramatic shift in logo and uniform design, ditching pastel creamsicle duds and the flamboyant Zorro helmet sticker for a stunning pewter and red combination.

Come 2013, another Florida team could be making a change, but not as dramatic.

Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post reports that the Dolphins are “well into discussions” with the league office on a “fresh new look” for 2013.  The NFL and the Dolphins have been “trading emails for several weeks,” swapping mock-ups of possible changes to the cartoon Dolphins wearing a white helmet with an orange “M” on the side, in front of an outline of the sun.

It’s not a certainty that change is coming, team CEO Mike Dee told Volin.  The goal, however, is to consider a desire from fans to see the team “freshen up” its look.

“We’re not talking about changing colors or taking the sun off the helmet. It’s not going to be like when Tampa Bay changed from orange to pewter gray,” Dee said. “It’s definitely keeping one eye on what’s traditional in the logo intact, while keeping one eye on a 21st century version of that.”

Volin writes that the new logo would feature changes to the dolphin, likely with the facial expression gone and the aquatic mammal looking like the dolphin from the now-defunct Dolphin Stadium logo.

Coincidentally, the Dolphins last tweaked their logo in 1997, the same year the Buccaneers made a change so major that few likely noticed the adjustment of the Dolphins’ original 1966 look.

One word not appearing anywhere in the article, but undoubtedly looming over the process is “Nike.”  Surely, the league’s new apparel provider is flywire-deep in the discussions, with the mockups to the logo undoubtedly tied to potential changes to the overall uniform.

The Dolphins have until November to submit a final logo for 2013.  And then the new logo would be debuted at a time calculated to generate the highest number of orders of merchandise bearing the new design.

For now, the message is this:  Don’t buy anything containing the current Dolphins logo, unless you want to own obsolete gear in fewer than 12 months.

  1. Problem is, how do you make a dolphin look like a fearsome man-eating killer? Seems that teams are going for that kind of image even as urban violence spreads throughout the nation.

  2. I actually really like the Dolphins logo. A dolphin with a football helmet on, what could be better? If they do change logos I’m definitely going to go get some on sale Dolphin gear for that fun retro feel.

  3. I see it another way… Buy all you can now so you have the “classic” gear! The creamsicle Bucs gear is dope. I bet the classic Fins gear will be just as cool and it will prove that you weren’t just a bandwagoner when they return to glory days!

  4. I’m not a fan or anything, but the Dolphins have a classic, recognizable logo. Tweaking is okay, but I would hate to see them change it much. And I’m not a huge fan of the Nike design changes that I’ve seen so far.

  5. Please, please, please don’t change the logo! Too much history. A little tweak like they did in 1997 would be ok, but totally unnecessary. Just leave it alone. It ain’t broke.

  6. If they go with the trend….their logo will just be a Dolphins head….Did you know there are only two logos in the NFL that have 4 legs?

  7. It kind of reads like a slight dig at the uniform change by the Bucs. I’m not a Buc fan, but personally I think they now have one of the best, unique uniforms in sports.

I’m just hoping Miami doesn’t bring back the ‘Niner-like drop-shadow on the numbers. Ugly.

  8. “Don’t buy anything containing the current Dolphins logo, unless you want to own obsolete gear in fewer than 12 months.”

I wouldn’t call it obsolete. I would would call it classic.

  9. Just leave the colors alone. The ONLY team in sports period with the aqua and orange scheme. except the basketball team from that will farrell movie.

  10. “Don’t buy anything containing the current Dolphins logo.”

Yeah… no worries there. A new or updated logo for Miami is long overdue. Curious to see what they come up with.

  11. I live 3 minutes from our Practice Facility, and work even closer… All I can say is that we will surprise teams this year… We might go 8-8, guarantee half those wins are against playoff teams…

  12. I was just thinking about this the other day. The dolphins are certainly due for an updated look. Although I wonder why they are so concerned with keeping the “sun” in their logo.

I would just go with a total reboot like the Bronco’s did a few years back.

As a Colts fan, and as Steeler’s/Green Bay/Chicago/etc. fans can attest to; I’m comfortable stating that sometimes it’s nice to not have to worry about people messing with a good thing.

  14. Nooooo!!! This coming from a lifelong Pats fan- don’t do it!! That is one of the best logos in sports.

  15. Bad advice in that last paragraph. You should buy as much stuff now as you can, because once they change the logo it will become “vintage”.

  16. What I’ve always wondered is why the dolphin is not wearing the actual Dolphins helmet? Is he not a member of his own team? Why does his helmet have an M on it instead of the Dolphins logo?

  17. I’d still buy it, b/c you know that in 10 years or so the old logos will come back as “retro” and cost almost double than the current ones.

  18. I’m not a fins fan. I actually dislike them quite a bit, but that logo is as iconic as it gets in the NFL. Changing it would be a travesty.

  19. Finally! The Dolphins have had one of the worst logos in sports for a long time. Let’s just hope they don’t try and mimic the Marlins colors/logo.

  20. Dolphins logo is one of the coolest in the NFL.
It hasn’t changed much in over 40 years. Big mistake to change it.
Why not do a fan vote and see if the fans want a new logo?

  21. This is just another way to get more dollars out of fans by making their teams apparel obsolete.

I think taking the helmet off the dolphin would be the first change to make.

Given the focus on concussions these days, wouldn’t that send the wrong message? The Dolphin has a hard enough time trying to run, no?

  23. Lifelong fan, and love the logo… just think we need more aggressive colors to go with it. The orange is beloved and needs to be used more often. I feel we could use a black as well, rotating with the orange for away games would be awesome.

  24. It’s about time! Ever since the bucs changed their unis the dolphins, with the Vikings a close second, have had the sorriest unis and helmets in the league. Period point blank!! Can anyone really and truly in their heart of hearts tell me I’m wrong?
