Former exec thinks Russell Wilson will eventually be Seahawks QB

The Seahawks have stressed the competitive aspect of their quarterback situation, though most expect Matt Flynn to be the guy to start the season. But one former NFL evaluator thinks rookie Russell Wilson’s the best of the lot, and will eventually win the job.

I think he is the future, there’s no question,” Tony Softli told the “Bob and Groz” radio show on 710 ESPN in Seattle. “Flynn, Jackson, they better not open the door because this guy will slam it shut.”

Softli’s a former college scouting director with the Panthers and Rams, so it isn’t an unqualified opinion.

While Wilson’s physical stature has come under scrutiny, Softli said Wilson “throws a better ball” than Drew Brees (which may be a bit of a stretch, there Tony).

“This guy is 5-foot-10 and five-eighths,” Softli said. “That’s the only reason that he went that late in the draft. A steal by [general manager John Schneider] and coach [Pete] Carroll to get him in the third round.

“You’re going to have to roll him out, you’re going to have to play him a little bit like Wisconsin did. But I think this guy can also stand in the pocket and really deliver some nice balls. I like everything about this guy.”

So did the Seahawks obviously, and there are enough signs pointing Wilson’s way that Softli may be right someday, even if he’s not quite the next Brees.
