49ers sign Darcel McBath

The 49ers filled their 90th roster spot Monday by signing a player at the same position as Dashon Goldon.

Goldson still hasn’t signed his franchise tender, leaving the 49ers shorthanded at safety as they prepare for the start of camp on Friday. They addressed that concern by signing Darcel McBath as a free agent on Monday.

McBath was a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2009, but never made much of an impact on the team outside of special teams. He was released by Denver, where he played for 49ers secondary coach Ed Donatell, just before the start of last season and played one game with the Jaguars late in the season.

The team is obviously prepared to start camp without Goldson, although there’s not really much reason for him not to sign his tender at this point. Goldson can’t sign a long-term deal and staying away from camp won’t do much to help him earn one once the 2012 season comes to a close.

The 49ers also announced that linebacker Darius Fleming, who tore his ACL, has been placed on the PUP list. The fifth-round pick is likely to wind up on injured reserve as a result of the injury.
