The Detroit Lions are getting thinner at cornerback.
Hours after the Lions released cornerback Aaron Berry following his second arrest of the offseason comes news that rookie cornerback Chris Greenwood, who had surgery for a torn abdominal muscle in May, is expected to begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
“It’s definitely been frustrating just because I haven’t been able to show what I can do,” Greenwood told detroitlions.com. “I haven’t had the opportunity outside of a couple days that I practiced. It’s something people go through sometimes and I’m just trying to bounce back.”
As a fifth-round draft pick out of Division III Albion College, Greenwood wasn’t expected to compete for a starting job immediately, but the Lions loved his combination of size and speed and think highly of his potential.
Chris Houston will be one of the Lions’s starting cornerbacks, while veterans Jacob Lacey and Alphonso Smith, and rookies Dwight Bentley and Jonte Green, will all have a chance to compete for the other starting spot in training camp.
