Coach Mike Tomlin may not be the only Steelers employee to get a new contract on Tuesday.

He also may not be the only Steelers employee named “Mike” to get a new contract on Tuesday.

Tight end Weslye Saunders has congratulated receiver Mike Wallace on a new contract via a Twitter message.  Saunders later tried to put the toothpaste back in the Twitter tube.

Wallace, a restricted free agent, has received a one-year tender worth $2.7 million.  The Steelers opted not to reduce the tender dramatically on June 15, even though they could have.

The Steelers report for training camp on Tuesday.  It’s still unknown whether Wallace will be there.

Perhaps the bigger question for now is whether Saunders will be.

UPDATE 6:00 p.m. ET:  Saunders’ tweet may have come from inside information, or it may have come from an apparently erroneous report that Wallace has a new deal.  Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that Wallace does not yet have a new contract.

  1. Saunders was probably just responding to tweets from various local sources who announced a deal had been made and then all quickly began to backtrack proclaiming they were misinformed by their sources. It seems that several people jumped the gun on that one sacrificing truth in the name of brevity.

  2. saunders was a beast at USC before he got suspended for receiving benefits.

i swear he is antonio gates talent that the steelers got undrafted.

  3. I hope he gets it I really do because Ant Brown is without a doubt the better WR with a higher ceiling and there’s no way in hell they can afford both contracts next year along with every restructured deal coming into play as well.

  4. Wallace is obviously one of the most talented receivers in the league, seems genuinely driven and focused on being the greatest player he can be.

I hope it’s true. The NFL is a brutal game. And going out there without guaranteed money would make anyone think twice– even guys who don’t have the balls to hold out.

If the Steelers lock him up, it’s good for them and BETTER for him.

  5. We keep saying that there is no way the Steelers can keep/pay their talent but year after year their front office magician finds a way to get it done! I somewhat understand the cap rules but in no way am I an expert. That said, Omar Khan, the man behind the curtains…he’s done it year in and year out…should get some kind of an award for his astute business prowess! Go Omar…keep up the awesome work!

  6. So many players need to grow up and start acting like pros, wait til management announces it! It is their place to do so! Geez get a clue!

  7. elrocky7 you don’t get what is so great about Twitter, we get people’s thought’s in real time. We don’t have to wait to get “managements” watered down version of things. We get see what is really is going on in the minds of people as it happens. So everything isn’t 100% accurate, that’s the way life is. #fanofkeepingitreal
