James Carpenter might miss all of 2012

The Seattle Seahawks were roundly criticized for drafting offensive tackle James Carpenter in the first round of last year’s draft, and the early signs on Carpenter’s career aren’t promising. He struggled in nine rookie-year starts, particularly as a pass blocker, and tore his ACL on the practice field in November.

Carpenter opened training camp on the PUP list. ESPN’s John Clayton is now saying that Carpenter might not play football in 2013.

That knee was bad,” Clayton said on ESPN 710 Seattle. “It hasn’t really had a full time to heal. I think he’s slow in healing. If they get four games out of him, they’re lucky. I don’t think they’re going to get any games out of him.”

Carpenter figures to stay on the PUP list into the regular season, costing him the first six games. The Seahawks will reevaluate him thereafter.

Breno Giacomini is on track to open the year as Seattle’s first-team right tackle.
