The good part about training camp is the return of football, obviously.

The bad part is the list of injuries that inevitably starts to pile up when professional athletes resume their task. Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta added an entry to that list on Monday. Coach John Harbaugh told reporters that Pitta broke his hand and may require surgery, according to Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times.

Harbaugh said that the team expects to have Pitta back in time for Week One of the regular season, although there will probably be some adjustment to that timeline once doctors get a fuller idea of the extent of the damage. The loss would be a significant one for the Ravens offense as Pitta took on a big role toward the end of last season.

After catching 27 passes in the first 11 weeks of the season, Pitta had 13 catches and two touchdowns in the final five games. He added seven more catches and another touchdown in the postseason. Ed Dickson, who had 54 catches last year, will take on a bigger role while Pitta is out, but the Ravens might be waiting a while for one of their reliable targets to get back up to speed.
