Eagles replace Ron Johnson with former Kafka teammate

On the surface, it appears that the Eagles added insult to injury for receiver Ron Johnson, cutting him a day after suffering a “gruesome” ankle dislocation.

But waiving a player is standard procedure for any team that wants to move a non-vested veteran to injured reserve before the rosters are reduced from 90 players.

And so the Eagles are risking that someone will pull a Belichick, claiming Johnson on waivers before he can revert to the Eagles’ injured-reserve list.

The Eagles made the move now in order to create a roster spot for receiver Andy Brewer, who played with Eagles backup quarterback Mike Kafka at Northwestern -- and who also played for Eagles personnel executive Rick Mueller at UFL’s Omaha Nighthawks.

Brewer actually arrived at Northwestern as a quarterback before becoming a receiver. In 2009, he set a single-season record for the Wildcats with 16.2 yards per catch.
