In the Dolphins’ three-way quarterback competition, only rookie first-round draft pick Ryan Tannehill can be confident that he’ll still be in Miami in a month.

If Tannehill performs well enough in training camp and the preseason to make the coaches think he’s ready to at least be the No. 2 quarterback, then the loser between the two veterans competing for the job, Matt Moore and David Garrard, could get cut before the start of the regular season, according to Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.

Both Moore and Garrard are vested veterans whose salaries will be guaranteed if they’re on the roster for Week One, so cutting one of them would save more than $2 million. (Moore’s salary is $2.75 million, while Garrard’s is $2.25 million.) If one of the quarterbacks is cut, the Dolphins would keep only two quarterbacks on their 53-man roster.

Through the early days of training camp, all indications are that Garrard has looked like a better fit in new coach Joe Philbin’s offense. Garrard, however, is declining to call himself the favorite.

“Not one coach has come to me and said, ‘Buzz is you are winning the job right now,’” Garrard said.

But if the buzz is right, Moore could be out of a job soon.
