When undrafted rookie wide receiver Cole Beasley told the Cowboys that he was leaving the team earlier this week, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said that they hoped to convince him to come back.
Something they said must have worked, because the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that Beasley has had a change of heart and decided to return to the team. He’s expected to take part in the team’s Blue-White scrimmage on Sunday afternoon. The timing is pretty good, since Miles Austin is dealing with another hamstring injury and the Cowboys could use as many healthy bodies as possible at the moment.
There had to be a roster move to accommodate Beasley’s arrival. The Cowboys placed him on the exempt-left squad list when they signed guards Daniel Loper and Derrick Dockery so they needed to lose a player to put Beasley back on the 90-man roster. Linebacker Aston Whiteside drew the short straw.
Beasley drew some comparisons to Wes Welker earlier this offseason -- comparisons that he didn’t appreciate -- and the Cowboys could use a presence in the slot on offense this season. He’ll be competing with Dwayne Harris, Andre Holmes, Kevin Ogletree and Danny Coale for snaps behind Austin and Dez Bryant, although you have to wonder if he’ll be able to play well enough to overcome losing the hunger to play the game when you haven’t even really started your career.
Jones said that the team is also going to sign wide receiver David Little and an unnamed running back, which will necessitate two more roster moves after the scrimmage.
