At a time when elderly patients are rushed out of the hospital within days after having open-heart surgery, Texans linebacker Brian Cushing recently was admitted to the hospital with an undisclosed illness. And now that he’s out (even though we still don’t know why he was in), he could be in the lineup on Saturday when the Texans open their preseason schedule.

“I think there’s a good chance,” coach Gary Kubiak said Thursday regarding whether Cushing will play when Houston travels to Carolina, via comments distributed by the team. “Obviously, I’m going to know that he’s himself. I like to see him go out there and get his reps with the group. I think tomorrow’s a big day.

“We know he’s doing well right now. He’ll be a part of the process, as I said. We’ll be in here early tomorrow morning. All indications are that he will.”

Cushing returned to the team on Thursday after being released from the hospital, and he’ll attend meetings on Thursday night.
