The Nick Foles era begins

The contract Mike Vick signed in 2011 operates, as a practical matter, as a two-year deal with with a year-to-year team option on the remainder.  And if Vick doesn’t have a big year in 2012, the Eagles could have an intriguing option come 2013.

Rookie Nick Foles has looked great so far in his debut with the Eagles, completing six of eight passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns.

The first one went for 70 yards, after Foles stepped up in the pocket, rolled to his right, and threw back across his body to Demaris Johnson, who was wide open.

The second was caught by Mardy Gilyard, a 44-yarder hauled in near the goal line.  The call on the field accurately was overturned by the replacement officials, giving Foles his second touchdown pass in the third quarter.

  1. this kid got a crazy arm – hope he takes the backup spot so he can get some playing time while Vick is out for a few games again this season – way more intriguing than Kafka.

  2. AKA Welcome to mediocrity, Philadelphia. Just where your football team belongs brother.

  3. Yea he’s looked impressive with a big arm, but c’mon, he’s playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers in which many of whom won’t make the Steelers’ roster. Wouldn’t anoint him the next starter just yet MF.

  4. eagles third team > pittsburgh’s third team

I know you want to pull a silver lining out of this game mikey but i remember the same excitement about kafka after his first preseason game. and he blows.

  5. I suppose we are all guilty of it,its only preseason-against back ups and guys who’ll be cut. But good show by foles i guess

  6. Definitely should be the #2. Kafka can’t throw the ball more than 5 yards down field with any accuracy. He hardly tries, even in the 2 minute drill. You cant’ win in the NFL when a defense only has to cover the line, and 7 yards off of it.

They should cut Kafka, andl let the kid and Edwards fight over the #2 spot

  7. The third string QB comes in against the scrubs in the first pre-seasons game and his “era” begins? Ummm….ok lol. That’s like saying, “The Caleb Hanie Era Begins”

  8. I guess it would be easy for the backup quarterback to look good against some other backups and mostly third stringers. Is he the next A.J. Feely or Kevin Kolb?

  9. U of A!!!! Go Nick! 🙂 Just like my Lions, had to wait 30 years on this planet for my Cats to field a legit stud at QB. I hope like hell Foles has a long and productive career. He has the talent to do it, and he’s tough as nails.

  10. I’m not an eagles fan but if I’m a nobody and/or washed up qb, there’s gotta be no better place to play than Philly…aj feeley, Jeff Garcia, mcnabb, kolb, Vick, I’m sure I’m missing a few more.

  11. Florio and his eagles love should be ashamed of this headly after 1 good quarter against 3rd stringers. get some credibility mike.

  12. not a cardinals fan. but all the trade him to arizona for 1st rounders and someone is really sad. sad because thats all eagles fans have to brag about.

  13. the first TD was a blown coverage. Anybody could have made that play.

The second was a good throw but against the scrubs.

Mike Vick was in midseason form. First guy not open, pull down the ball and run. There are 12 year olds playing Madden who read defenses better.

A Redskins fan talking about mediocrity, hahaha. I guess your so used to being a bottomfeeder, mediocrity would be an improvement for your crappy team. What a dope you are BROTHER.

  15. Foles is a guaranteed lock for the hall of fame as long as he faces the opposition’s 3rd string defense his entire career.

  16. 🙂 I see Dan Marino all over this kid just a bit more mobile. Look at those passes. Yes it was against the 2nd and 3rd string but the Eagles had their 2nd and 3rd string. This was his first game ever in the NFL. Dont give me the “he is slow” argument. I forgot, Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, Kurt Warner and Troy Aikman all ran 4.4 40’s. Give the kid a chance. He is the first Eagles QB in a long time that lets his WR’s make plays and throw the ball to the spots as opposed to the reciever. Doing a fantasy draft tomorrow. I plan on taking my man in the last round as a keeper and reeping the benefits of a Matt Stafford year in 2013. Nice pick Andy and Howie. Love it. Draft best available and not on need. HooRAHH!

  17. Only Mike Florio would put “The Nick Foles Era Begins” … Dude, he’s playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers? Plus there are always no body’s who play great preseason games but have absolutely no success during the actual season…

  18. Nick Foles era begins?
All this tells me is that the Eagles don’t have to worry that their #2 might be a Curtis Painter in waiting.

I bet Arizona will give the Eagles two 1st rounders for him.

    *Slow clap*

So often, the first post just absolutely knocks it out of the park. Well played, sir….well played.

  20. Vick has a lot of quit in him… he thought he’d found his way out of the season. Looks like he may have to play a few more weeks…

  21. “…and threw back across his body to Demaris Johnson, who was wide open.”

It was hardly across his body. Seriously, take a look at the play.

  22. That’s great and all but let’s remember that it was aganist 2nd and 3rd string guys instead of starters.

And he had to work with a 2nd and 3rd string supporting cast. He could of went 2/10 with no TDS. He performed like he should have playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers. Way to be negative.

Let’s also remember that he was playing WITH 2nd and 3rd string guys instead of starters.

  24. The fact that Demaris Johnson and the incomparable Marty Gilyard caught those TDs tells you all you need to know about who was on the field with him.

  25. I like Nick Foles’s potential and he definitely has the physical tools to develop into a good QB but conclusions can never be drawn from preseason games that goes for starters and backups we just can’t read anything into it until the real games start.

  26. Why is everyone saying ” Yea but it was against 2nd and 3nd stringers” … Yea cause he isnt a rookie or anything…? Im not gonna sit and say hes the future after 1 pre-season game, but he had a good game yes.
I dont know why Eagles fans are against Kafka. I like him and think he should have been the #2 last year. He came in the heat of the moment against Atlanta last year and played solid. If Maclin doesnt drop a 4th & 1, he would have had a chance to win the game. Im not say HE is the future either, but I apparently like him more than others.

  27. The preseason truly does reveal who has “it” and who doesn’t even if it’s against 3rd stringers. Everybody forgot that this is how Victor Cruz started against 3rd stringers ..

  28. Nate Davis looked like a stud in the preseason and he got cut by the Niners. It is a good sign for Foles that he played well, but doesn’t even mean he’ll be good in a real game, let alone great. And to the guy who said he looks like Dan Marino, just stop, you’re an idiot.

  29. It was a smart move by the Eagles to draft Nick Foles given that Michael Vick seems to get hurt getting out of bed every morning. Then again Kevin Kolb has looked like a real dandy…

  30. Calm down Beagles fans…you’ll get an opportunity to see NF9 in action after the Redskins put Vick on a stretcher…AGAIN!!!

Comparisons of Nick Foles to RGIII just make you look ridiculous. While NF9 was airing it out against 3rd stringers, RGIII was dancing in the end zone…against Buffalo’s starting defense.

  31. i dont care about Foles’ statline, he just had impressive mobility/arm strength, his pass was on target – woop!

I just hope he gets the 2nd team reps next, so we can see how far this kid can take it.

  32. No point in getting all hyped up over this guy yet, or Edwards for that matter. This was just about a half step up from playing in the Senior Bowl or some other college all star game.

  33. Foles looked pretty good out there, he hasn’t changed much since playing college ball. He has always had a good arm with decent accuracy and limited mobility. A couple of years in Philly working with one of the best QB coaches will set this kid up good for a shot starting somewhere in the NFL. The thing I like best about NF is his confidence, he seems real calm out there.

  34. Actually, the second throw was a perfect pass against tight coverage by Curtis Brown, a player the Steelers expect to be a starting caliber corner sometime in the next couple years.

Foles impressed me (not that it means anything)

Cowboys suck, Giants suck, Redskins suck.

WOW talking about a QB in philly and some fool needs to be reminded of the cold hard truth

Giants 4 Time Super Bowl Champions and Current defending champions

Cowboy’s who do suck but still have won 5 Super Bowl’s

Redskins again they suck but still have won 3 Super Bowl’s
So if those teams with a total of 12 Trophies suck what does that say about the only team in the east with zero Super Bowl wins?

With more then 25% of all Super Bowl’s won by NFC East team’s it must really suck not to have any.

    Keep the dream alive philly

  36. First Doug Williams, then Matt Schaub, and Kevin Kolb, now Nick Foles.

If there’s one thing the Vick detractors can all agree on, it’s that his back up is ALWAYS the best QB in football…
