When defensive lineman Kentwan Balmer left Redskins training camp almost two weeks ago, he did so without leaving so much as a note about his whereabouts.

That left the Redskins without any idea where Balmer went after he decided to clear out of camp and he didn’t seem to have much interest in enlightening them since he reportedly changed his phone number. Attempts to reach Balmer by the team, media and Balmer’s high school coach remained unsuccessful during the week, but Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Saturday that contact has been made with Balmer.

According to the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star, Shanahan didn’t offer much beyond that. He didn’t say who had contacted Balmer by phone and shared no information about where Balmer went or why he left in the first place.

Shanahan also didn’t address Balmer’s future with the team. Balmer has been placed on the reserve/left squad list and it’s hard to believe he has much of a future in Washington unless there’s a very compelling reason why he left camp without giving the team a heads up. It’s the second time Balmer has gone AWOL from camp after he pulled a similar stunt while with the 49ers in 2010.
