Jermichael Finley won’t play for the Packers on Thursday night

Packers tight end Jermichael Finley was expected to make his preseason debut on Thursday night against the Bengals, but it won’t happen.

Packers fans shouldn’t worry about a recurrence of his concussion symptoms from earlier in camp or a setback in his return from a quadriceps injury. There’s a much happier reason for Finley’s absence from the lineup.

It’s the second child for Finley and his wife and the tight end explained in a subsequent tweet that he’s heading back to Green Bay to take care of the newest addition to the family. We send our congratulations to Finley, his wife and the whole family.

We’ll now look for word on whether or not Finley will see any action in the final preseason game. Traditionally, that’s the playing field of practice squadders and the soon-to-be unemployed, but Finley hasn’t been on the field at all this summer. Given Finley’s familiarity with the offense and his role in it, we’d bet against seeing him in game action until the first week of the regular season.
