The Jets have spent most of the summer with cameras focused on their quarterback non-competition, but they’ll close it with an actual punting battle.

Given the way the offense has looked so far, that might prove to be the more significant battle.

They were awarded punter Spencer Lanning off of waivers from the Browns on Tuesday, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Lanning was waived as the Browns made their way to 75 players and has bounced through the Bears and Jaguars organizations as well since coming out of South Carolina. He’ll try to unseat T.J. Conley, who has had an up and down summer booting the ball.

Lanning was also claimed by the Bears, but the Jets had waiver priority. That’s one of two big indications that the team is worried about Adam Podlesh’s hip flexor injury, which sounds like it will cause him to miss the start of the regular season.

“We’re going to be smart about how we get myself back on the field,” Podlesh said.

The other sign was that they had six punters, including Matt Turk, in on Tuesday for tryouts to see if they want to make a change from Ryan Quigley.
