Rams part ways with Vernon Gholston

The third time wasn’t the charm for former sixth overall pick Vernon Gholston.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gholston is one of the players getting pink slipped by the Rams on Friday as the team makes its way down to 53 players by the 9 p.m. ET deadline on Friday night. Gholston was only signed by the Rams on Aug. 22, so it isn’t all that surprising that he wasn’t able to do enough to nail down a spot on the roster in such an abbreviated stay with the team.

Gholston is well on his way to going down as one of the biggest draft busts in the last decade. He played 45 games for the Jets over three seasons and never picked up a sack, which is pretty damning when you go sixth overall on the strength of your ability to rush the passer. He spent training camp with the Bears last season, but got cut at the end of camp and spent the year out of the NFL.

Unless someone else decides to see if they can find something worthwhile in Gholston, he’ll be spending this year and every other one for the foreseeable future out of the league as well.

The Rams have also cut cornerback Kendric Burney, fullback Ben Guidugli and center/guard Tim Barnes, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
